Chapter 228: Wrapped in a Trench Coat

Chapter 228: Wrapped in a Trench Coat

Emma Hart wandered around the office, glancing at her watch—it was about time for Damian Sterling to leave. Punctually at the end of the workday, she grabbed her bag and headed for the door, rushing to the parking lot exit on the ground floor.

This was the first time Emma had ever left the office with such eagerness, the very first to exit! Meanwhile, silence enveloped the area near the parking exit. Damian Sterling was due at a banquet and was unlikely to linger in the office for long.

Emma remembered Sophia Greenwood bragging about the timing; the invitation showed 6 o’clock. Damian was not one to be late, especially not one to delay on purpose just to make an entrance.

Pacing back and forth, Emma was eventually startled by a familiar sound from behind. Standing at the entrance of the parking lot, she suddenly heard the roar of an engine—a distinct sound, undoubtedly from a limited edition model, its unique timbre recognizable even to her.

A sudden nervousness overtook her; she began to pace uneasily, darting from one side to the other, even seeking refuge behind a bare, leafless tree—an almost ludicrous attempt at concealment.

Then, Emma paused, her bright eyes rolling as if struck by a realization. Why was she hiding? Wasn’t she there to be seen by him?

Taking a step to the side, Emma positioned herself so that she could be seen by Damian as he drove out of the parking lot. She shifted her feet slightly, intentionally trying to catch Damian’s attention.

As Damian’s car emerged from the parking lot, it brushed past Emma. She lifted her head, which had been bowed low, just in time to see his car speed past without a glance in her direction. Angrily stomping her foot, she thought, ’Does he really not see me at all?’

Frustrated, Emma watched as the car ahead suddenly stopped. In a panic, she turned around, flustered and unsure of her next move. She had intended to catch his attention, and now that the car had stopped, she turned away.

Emma tightly closed her eyes, listening intently for any sound from behind her. Her shoulders hunched as if to make herself invisible to him.

In the car, Damian Sterling looked through the rear-view mirror at the small figure tightly wrapped in her coat. This thin figure is pregnant with his child, and every time he saw her like this, Damian felt an overwhelming urge to hold her close.

Damian Sterling slowly opened the car door and stepped out, deliberately softening his footsteps as he approached Emma Hart. She sensed a distant noise, faint and unclear, doubting her own ears, perhaps due to nerves, wondering if it was just Damian attending to something else.

As Emma’s thoughts scattered wildly, she hadn’t anticipated the sudden tap on her shoulder. Even expecting Damian, the touch startled her.

Turning, she faced his eyes, his expression slightly amused as he gazed at her. A subtle smile played at the corners of his mouth, almost hidden in his cheeks, "What are you doing here?"

Damian watched her, casually hands in pockets, waiting for her response. "Well?" he prompted.

He maintained his effortless charisma, draped in a black trench coat that seemed tailor-made for his model-like physique, as if he had stepped right out of a magazine. Emma almost drooled at the sight.

Thinking about him escorting another woman to the detestable banquet that evening infuriated her. She couldn’t understand why she was so upset or why she had rushed here to confront him, behaviors she couldn’t even accept herself.

However, Emma wasn’t ready to admit these feelings. Hearing his question, she pretended nonchalance, her hand gripping her purse tightly, "Oh, just walking around... Why, Mr. Sterling? Is there a problem?"

Damian glanced back toward the desolate area behind the company building, the unlikely spot for a leisurely stroll. He scoffed, raising an eyebrow, "Wandering here? Is your home garden not big enough, or is the community greenery lacking?" he asked.

What good was a beautiful setting without company, Emma thought bitterly. But she quickly dismissed such thoughts. Did she really wish for companionship? Was his presence that important to her, especially someone like Damian Sterling?

"Fine, I’ll go wander at home," Emma retorted, feigning a turn to leave. Yet, as she turned, her eyes covertly watched, and her ears sharply listened for his reaction. Clutching her purse strap, she wondered, why won’t he call her back?

Even when she chose to wander alone, was she truly at ease? Did she only have thoughts of meeting another woman for a date? How could this be acceptable?

"Stop!" Damian Sterling’s commanding voice boomed from behind.

Emma Hart halted abruptly, a smirk playing across her face, "What’s the matter?" she turned around silently.

Facing Damian, she wondered if he had a shred of conscience, feeling sorry for her as she braved the chilly wind outside.

Emma secretly rejoiced, basking in a fleeting sense of victory.

Damian was about to speak when his phone rang. A shrill voice on the other end cried out, "Ah! Damian, my dear! Hurry, come find me! Something terrible has happened!"

The urgency in the woman’s voice didn’t seem to affect Damian much. He initially pulled the phone away from his ear as the loud voice erupted, then brought it closer again, his brow furrowing as he asked, "What’s happened?"

"Damian, my love! Hurry up! I’m sending you my location now!" Sophia Greenwood said hurriedly before ending the call.

Damian handed his phone to an assistant and then stepped towards Emma, "Get in the car! Don’t just stand there looking foolish!"

Emma had already forgotten her planned meeting with Oliver Westmore.

Damian strode forward dominantly, enveloping Emma within his coat, his arms firmly wrapping around her, a wave of warmth engulfing her.

Unable to help herself, Emma’s lips curled into a slight smile, her face spreading with amusement.

Suddenly, the phone rang again. The assistant hurriedly handed it over, "It’s Mr. Sterling Senior."

Damian Sterling answered the phone, capable of refusing most calls, but never one from Sterling Senior.

On the other end, the deep voice of Damian’s grandfather resonated, "Damian, after this, you’ll pick up Sophia and head there together."

A hint of impatience crawled across Damian’s face, and his grip on the phone tightened slightly. "Yes, alright, I understand," he responded curtly.
