Chapter 157: Broaden Your Horizons
Damian Sterling placed his hands together on the table, his sharp gaze piercing through to Matthew Taylor as their eyes met, sparking with intensity.
"Mr. Taylor, you’re aware of the Sterling Group’s standing in City A. If you secure this land, I’ll handle the rest, and we’ll split the profits equally. It’s a very fitting deal."
"But what if someone offers a price much lower than the Sterling Group’s, asking for less?" Matthew Taylor countered directly.
Damian was momentarily taken aback. No one would dare challenge the Sterling Group’s might!
Yet, Matthew Taylor’s demeanor suggested that this deal wasn’t as straightforward as Damian had thought.
The only plausible explanation was that someone had offered a greater benefit, as in the business world, interests always take precedence over emotions.
Upon further reflection, Damian realized that there might be only one other company capable of taking on such a significant venture. It seemed he was not planning to back down.
Damian chuckled coldly, assuredly addressing Matthew Taylor, "One must think bigger. It’s often crucial to look beyond immediate gains. They’re offering so much, doesn’t that raise any concerns for you, Mr. Taylor?"
Matthew’s brow furrowed slightly at Damian’s words, reflecting his initial doubts about the fairness of such a distribution.
However, Matthew hadn’t dwelled on it, considering the partnering company’s formidable strength and sincere approach.
Damian, rising leisurely, had no intention of engaging in a price war for this partnership.
He gestured for his assistant to bring forth a prepared gift—a sophisticated box containing a dazzling night pearl, a unique piece once presented to Empress Dowager Cixi by the West.
"I hear Mr. Taylor Sr. appreciates antiques. This is the only one of its kind in the world," Damian stated as he offered the box. "Consider it a gesture of respect to your father from someone younger. I insist you accept it on behalf of your father."
With those words, Damian turned to leave.
As he stepped toward the door, he paused, half-turning to Matthew, "If I’m not mistaken, the one willing to concede a share must be Oliver Westmore of the Westmore Group."
Matthew remained silent, watching Damian’s departing figure.
Despite Damian’s youth, his solid foundation was not merely inherited.
His decisiveness and ruthlessness in business earned Matthew’s genuine respect.
However, the final decision on the partnership was still pending, requiring further deliberation.
Matthew Taylor was just about to leave the meeting room when his secretary approached him, reporting, "Mr. Taylor, your parents have arrived."
Oh no, his mother was likely on another matchmaking mission. Whose daughter would she be introducing this time?
"Just tell them I’m not..."
Before Matthew could finish, his mother’s piercing voice cut through, "Not what? That you’re not here?"
The secretary glanced at Matthew, clearly indicating he was out of options.
In the Taylor Corporation, no one dared defy Matthew’s mother, among them is the president of Taylor Group, and he has served as two presidents, one is her son and the other is her husband.
Seeing his mother only gave Matthew a headache. He attempted to make a quick escape but was promptly caught by her.
His mother, with patience in her voice, insisted, "Matthew Taylor, this girl is different from the others. Come and see; I promise you won’t be disappointed."
Sneakily, she had taken a photo of Emma Hart on her phone. Showing only half a face, a stray lock of hair covering half an eye, and a fair complexion. By his standards, the girl seemed quite appealing.
But Matthew had no time to dwell on this. The Taylor Corporation’s recent business deals had him swamped.
Trying to alleviate his mother’s urgency, Matthew led her to a nearby chair, asking, "Which family’s daughter is it this time?"
His mother had always introduced him to well-matched ladies, given their social circle.
It was clear Matthew found no interest in these heiresses, each afflicted with a princess complex, impossible to please or pamper. He simply didn’t have the time to entertain them.
Knowing her son’s disinterest, his mother excitedly sat down and shared, "This young lady saved your father in the park just now."
At the mention of his father’s peril, Matthew immediately became anxious, turning to his father, "Dad, what happened to you?"
His father waved off the concern, "Nothing serious, just a bout of low blood sugar that made me faint. It was over quickly, but your mother is making a big deal out of it."
His mother, not pleased by the comment, retorted, "Who are you calling dramatic? You really know how to worry people. I wish you’d just lie in the street unable to move; see if I care."
Matthew, noticing the gathering crowd witnessing his mother scold his father, coughed softly, whispering to his mother, "There are people around!"
Mrs. Taylor cast a pointed glance at Mr. Taylor before taking her seat.
Her gaze then shifted towards Matthew Taylor, expressing with a hint of insistence, "You absolutely must meet this girl. She’s a gem—kind, generous, and stunningly beautiful!"
Understanding dawned on Matthew Taylor as he processed his mother’s words.
It appeared his mother had set him up for a blind date with a girl she had seemingly plucked from the streets. His mother’s eagerness for him to wed was unmistakable.
Resigned yet compliant, Matthew took the girl’s phone number from his mother, "Alright, I’ll arrange to meet her tomorrow at noon."
"That’s settled then. We’ll accompany you," Mrs. Taylor announced, catching Matthew off guard.
"Why would you come along?" he asked, puzzled.
"To supervise you!" was her straightforward reply.
Mr. Taylor exchanged a glance with his wife, making it clear that ’we’ did not include him initially.
However, after a brief moment, he added, "I never said I was going!"
His protest was quickly silenced by a stern look from Mrs. Taylor, "Fine, fine, I’ll join as well."
Satisfied, Mrs. Taylor nodded, "Did you hear that? Your father will be there too. We’ll help you make sure not to overlook such a wonderful girl."
Meanwhile, Emma Hart had returned to the hotel early.
Just as Damien Sterling was entering, an assistant hurried him to sign a document, indicating Damien’s rare outings.
Upon his entry, Emma naturally took his wristwatch as he removed it.
Noticing Damien furrowing his brows, seemingly exhausted, Emma offered, "You look tired. Shall I get you some tea?"
Damien nodded in approval.
In no time, Emma brought him a cup of tea, placing it beside him.
By then, Damien had already reclined on the sofa, eyes closed.
Quietly, Emma moved behind him, gently pressing her fingers against his temples.
Startled, Damien’s eyes snapped open.
