Overbearing CEO's Contract Love -
Chapter 129: Trouble Follows Trouble
Chapter 129: Trouble Follows Trouble
Sweat beaded on Emma Hart’s forehead, marked by three figurative dark lines of worry.
Her relationship with Damien Sterling was a secret that couldn’t be revealed.
Catching Amelia Davidson’s gaze, Emma was struck by inspiration.
"Sister, you really hold quite the sway. Mr. Sterling heard you were at this hotel and made a special point of saying he wanted to check in on you during his meeting," she said, deftly shifting the focus to Amelia, who was visibly baffled by this assertion.
"Me?" Amelia could only recall their last encounter at the company’s annual meeting, where she received a significant bonus from Damien for being an outstanding employee.
That brief interaction was enough to earn such favor from him?
Despite her age, Amelia considered herself to still possess a certain charm, but attracting Damien Sterling seemed far-fetched.
Amelia offered Damien a sheepish smile, "Thank you, President Sterling, for your attentiveness to your employees."
Emma couldn’t help but laugh at the unfolding situation.
The room’s atmosphere grew tense with awkwardness spreading through every corner.
Then, facing each other, Emma and Amelia suggested, "President, it’s getting late. You should rest."
Emma looked at Damien, her face a mix of triumph and anxiety, unsure if he would expose her lie.
Damien shot Emma a sharp look before leaving the room.
Soon after, Emma received a message from him, "I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning!"
It seemed like the best possible outcome.
After Damien left, Amelia pinched herself, questioning, "Was that really Mr. Sterling?" The thought lingered uncomfortably. "Mr. Sterling came here to see me? This feels increasingly odd."
"Then don’t think about it," Emma advised.
"Exactly! Maybe I’m just too outstanding, or perhaps too beautiful, catching the President’s eye," Amelia joked.
Emma had expected Damien to send someone for her first thing in the morning.
Instead, it was his assistant who arrived, explaining, "Last night, the President received a call about an important meeting and had to fly out immediately."
So, was she free now?
The assistant added, "The President wants you to check in with him every twenty minutes."
Every twenty minutes now?
Emma reluctantly agreed, thankful at least that this arrangement was better than being whisked away immediately.
She wondered how she would have explained such a sudden departure to Amelia Davidson.
Amelia Davidson was in a rush this morning, telling Emma Hart, "I have to discuss our next partnership, facing a group even tougher than last night’s. It’s inconvenient to take you with me, plus I have a very important task for you. Pick up the contract tonight, and we’ll have won this battle."
"I don’t see why you’re pushing so hard. The marketing department will bring us projects, and we just need to focus on our designs."
"I just want to keep myself busy. Besides, if the company allows it, why not make the most of these resources? After all, more work means more gain, right?"
Emma couldn’t help but admire Amelia, who had collapsed at the drink table last night but was now ready to set off again with her makeup impeccably done.
Perhaps she too once had a tender side, perhaps she didn’t want to be this strong...
After Amelia left, Emma waited until the afternoon to receive the contract, fortunately getting her hands on it.
Checking the time on her phone, she realized her train ticket was already delayed, and even the long-distance buses were no longer available.
How was she supposed to get back? The solution was simple: just call that man.
But Emma didn’t want to do that.
Walking to the station, she saw some unlicensed taxi drivers pulling over passengers, "Going to City A?"
Emma Hart looked at the girl who was traveling with her in the car. Although she was scared, she thought that if she didn’t go back, the man would probably discuss with her whether to go to work again.
As the evening approached, dark clouds gathered in the sky.
"Let’s go, we’re leaving now. It might start raining if we wait any longer." Urged by the driver, Emma got into the car.
As they hit the highway, rain began to pour down.
The driver, navigating through the increasing downpour that nearly obscured the road ahead, suddenly pulled over after receiving a call.
Emma and the other girl in the car were confused, "What’s happening?"
"Get out, get out," the driver urged.
"What do you mean?"
"A typhoon is coming. Hurry up and get off! I’m not driving any further!" With that, he pulled them out of the car, leaving them on the highway in the rain.
The girl beside Emma started to cry out of fear.
Emma, trying to flag down cars, realized the danger and futility as every passing vehicle seemed too rushed to stop, especially on the highway.
Walking back wasn’t an option. With the girl beside her crying, Emma felt fear creeping in, thinking, Damien Sterling, Damien Sterling!
Right now, Emma Hart’s only wish was for Damien Sterling to appear before her eyes immediately!
In her moment of need, it was Damien Sterling who filled her thoughts!
Making the call, the man’s indifferent voice came through, "Hello?"
Hearing his cool voice strangely warmed her heart, her voice tinged with tears.
Damien Sterling instantly became alert, sitting up from the couch, sensing something was amiss, "What’s wrong? Where are you?"
"I’m on...," Emma Hart looked around, "I don’t know where I am, I’m on the highway!"
"What?"
"The driver dropped us off, my ticket was delayed, and a typhoon is approaching..." Emma spoke incoherently.
Impatiently, the man instructed, "Send me your location! Don’t move from where you are!"
"Okay, I got it," Emma replied before hanging up.
The rain, large as peas, pelted her, hitting the screen.
Just as she found her location, her phone shut off, the screen went black, and it wouldn’t turn back on...
What to do? Emma Hart frantically pressed her phone, but it remained unresponsive.
Cars passed by as Emma watched the road in panic.
From City A to here was at least a two-hour drive.
Emma placed her hand on her stomach, the highway offering no shelter from the rain.
She prayed silently for the baby inside her to be safe, to be okay...
Minutes ticked by - ten minutes, twenty minutes, thirty... Soaked by the rain, Emma felt cold and wet through.
Clutching the contract in her bag tightly against her stomach, she knew these were the two things she needed to protect.
Damien Sterling, please hurry. Please hurry!
