Chapter 128: Clearly Remembering It Wasn’t Him

Chapter 128: Clearly Remembering It Wasn’t Him

Upon reaching their destination, Amelia Davidson dragged Emma Hart to the networking event.

As they entered, several men greeted Amelia.

One of them remarked, "You’re late, Amelia Davidson."

Noticing the men’s insinuating glances, Amelia understood their intentions.

She picked up a pre-poured glass of wine, declaring, "Then, I shall drink this as my penalty!"

With that, Amelia downed the glass of liquor in one gulp.

Emma, following closely behind Amelia, was shocked by the scene.

Such settings were foreign to her, and she felt a bit intimidated.

One of the men, noticing the vibrant Emma behind Amelia, came over with a glass of wine, attempting to introduce himself, "Amelia Davidson, won’t you introduce us to this lady?"

Amelia stood protectively in front of Emma, "She’s my new assistant, still quite young and not much of a drinker. I’ll drink on her behalf."

The man, unimpressed by Amelia’s intervention, insisted, "You are you, and she is she. We’ll drink with you later."

Emma, repelled by the man’s overwhelming smell of alcohol, softly declined, "Sorry, I don’t drink."

The man, enchanted by her delicate voice, proposed, "That soft voice... Amelia Davidson, if she keeps me company tonight, all our company’s orders will go to you, including those from my subsidiaries."

Emma instinctively stepped back to avoid the man’s advances.

As Amelia stepped forward to intervene, the man pushed her aside, "Drink this, and the deal is yours."

Just as Amelia attempted to step in, Emma took the wine glass and drank the entire glass of red wine.

The man, thrilled by her action, joyously drank his glass as well.

Amelia, taken aback, watched Emma in disbelief, not expecting her to finish the wine.

Knowing Emma was not accustomed to alcohol, Amelia worried about how she would fare for the rest of the evening.

After drinking the wine, Emma sat down at the table.

The man, eager to continue drinking with Emma, was intercepted by Amelia, who suggested, "What’s the appeal in something so easily obtained? If you want to have a good time, I’ve got a better idea. How about I drink five glasses with you first, and then you can drink with my sister here?"

The man frowned, already feeling tipsy, doubting his capacity for more drinks.

Seeing his hesitation, Amelia taunted, "What’s the matter? Losing your nerve? My sister here likes a real hero."

Encouraged by Amelia’s challenge, the man lifted his glass to drink, declaring, "I’m not backing down. Let’s drink!"

Emma Hart whispered to Amelia Davidson, "Sis, I can’t drink anymore."

Amelia shot her a look, implying, "Do you think after those five drinks, he could still get up?"

True enough, after those five drinks, Emma couldn’t stand up anymore, and by then, Amelia was already slumped over the table, drunkenly.

Groggily, Emma left the room, seeking a restroom, feeling as if the hallway itself was spinning around her.

She heard someone calling her name, but in her dazed state, she couldn’t identify the caller.

A sense of unfinished business nudged her; fumbling in her pocket, she found her phone, and with a drunken smile, slurred, "Call him!"

She dialed the number, but after several attempts, met only a busy tone.

Emma sent a text instead, "I’m fine, you didn’t pick up," and contentedly slipped the phone back into her pocket, staggering towards what seemed to be the restroom, her steps growing heavier.

"Emma Hart..." Someone caught her, and upon opening her eyes, she saw a vaguely familiar face.

Pointing at the man, she mumbled, "You look like a friend of mine."

"I’m Oliver Westmore. What are you doing here?" were the last words she clearly remembered before losing consciousness.

She felt herself being carried gently and laid down on something soft, covered with something warm, and then... she drifted into a deep sleep, filled with long dreams.

Abruptly, the door was kicked open, and as Emma awoke, she couldn’t tell how much time had passed.

Standing before her, furiously, was Damien Sterling.

Damien Sterling? Emma, nursing her groggy head, sat up in bed, recalling someone mentioning Oliver Westmore before she passed out, but the man before her was unmistakably Damien Sterling.

"Damien Sterling?" she echoed.

"Who else?" he retorted, glaring at Emma as if he had just arrived.

Noticing Emma lying in bed, his eyes blazed with a predatory rage.

Approaching, he leaned in close, catching the scent of alcohol, "Have you been drinking?"

Emma Hart lowered her head, pulling out her phone to check the time.

It had only been two hours, yet the unsent text message glared back at her.

The journey from City A to here usually took three hours, but with Damien Sterling’s driving, reaching in under two wasn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Emma Hart stretched out her hand to signal to Damien Sterling, "I just drank a little bit, really just a little bit."

"Who allowed you?" he retorted.

Who allowed her? As if she needed to file a report and get permission from Damien Sterling to move her own lips?

The dinner table often necessitated compromises, something Damien was aware of, yet he allowed such compromises for others, not for his woman.

"Come back with me!" he demanded.

At that moment, Amelia Davidson’s voice echoed from outside, "Emma?"

Glancing nervously at Damien, Emma gestured for him to be silent with a "shush."

As Amelia entered the room and saw Emma on the bed, she approached anxiously, "Sister, you rested and vanished. Where did you go?"

"I’m fine," Emma reassured.

With a hint of guilt, Amelia added, "You dare to do so much for me, sister; I won’t let others..."

Emma glanced back at Damien Sterling, his expression grave.

Hearing Amelia’s words might provoke him to dismantle those responsible, sparing no one, not even sparing Emma herself in his rage.

"Sister, it’s okay, really, it’s fine." Amelia, noticing Emma’s evasive gaze, finally saw the man behind her.

Turning around, she was startled to find the CEO of Sterling Group.

"Mr... Sterling..."
