Overbearing CEO's Contract Love
Chapter 109: A Fit of Pique

Chapter 109: A Fit of Pique

"Hey, could you not reject the idea outright?" Emma Hart pleaded, hoping for some leeway.

"And if not?" Damien Sterling paused, his expression darkening.

What was Emma thinking? She was pregnant and wanted to work, making it seem like Damien Sterling couldn’t provide for her?

"I was hoping we could discuss this further," Emma said, her confidence waning after Damien’s outright refusal, her voice barely above a whisper.

Damien, whose hearing was exceptionally sharp, caught every word, "Emma Hart, I don’t want to hear about this again."

"Understood," Emma mumbled, pouting unhappily as she turned away from Damien and headed towards the living room, her dejected demeanor indicating she was upset.

But getting angry was futile against Damien Sterling.

She was left to sulk on her own.

Just as Emma reached the sofa, Mrs. Harris brought out the dinner, "Mr. Sterling, Emma, dinner is ready."

Hearing Mrs. Harris, Emma paused, her stomach growling just in time to remind her she was indeed hungry.

But did Mrs. Harris have to lack such timing, forcing her to return obediently after her dramatic exit?

She had clearly walked away in a huff, expecting to sit sulking on the sofa for a bit to maintain her pride, even if no one came to cajole her.

What to do now? Expecting Damien to coax her or call her back seemed nearly impossible.

Might as well sit down.

Emma slumped onto the sofa, leaning back as if she hadn’t heard Mrs. Harris.

Mrs. Harris, having placed the dishes on the table and noticing Damien’s indifference towards Emma, realized the couple seemed off, though not openly hostile.

Being a servant, she couldn’t very well suggest Damien go comfort Emma.

Mrs. Harris called out again towards Emma in the living room, "Emma, come and eat."

Emma listened carefully to Mrs. Harris’s call but wondered if getting up now would still leave her without dignity.

She decided to wait a bit longer and remained seated.

Mrs. Harris turned to see Damien Sterling glance inadvertently towards Emma but seemed to have no intention of calling her to dinner.

Mrs. Harris coughed, increasing her volume out of concern, "Emma, you haven’t eaten anything all afternoon. You must be hungry. Come and eat now."

Emma continued to pretend she didn’t hear, sulking yet secretly hoping for something.

Perhaps a concession from him? Impossible!

Damien, overhearing Mrs. Harris from the dining table, shot a quick glance at Emma, pretending it was accidental, then quickly averted his eyes.

His tolerance for her antics seemed to be waning. Was she now bold enough to throw tantrums with him?

Mrs. Harris sighed, unsure of how to proceed.

Emma, in the living room, had planned to get up at Mrs. Harris’s third call, but the third call never came. Mrs. Harris, why have we lost our sync?

Emma fidgeted on the spot, wondering if she had overplayed her act.

The aroma of dinner, including her favorite finely shredded shrimp dish, wafted over. She was so hungry and tempted.

Emma restrained herself, waiting for Mrs. Harris’s call once more.

Damien watched her, seemingly in a standoff, refusing to believe she expected him to invite her to dinner. No way!

He tried to distract himself from thoughts of her, letting her stew in her anger.

"Serve me the soup," Damien commanded calmly but loudly, "Oh, it’s corn soup."

Corn soup had become a favorite of Emma’s during her pregnancy, prompting Mrs. Harris to make it often.

Hearing the name of the soup almost broke Emma’s resolve, swallowing hard in frustration. Damien Sterling, this was too much!

She vowed to indulge in front of him when he was too old to enjoy food himself.

Wait, why was she imagining growing old with him? She quickly shook off that curse against herself.

As she pondered, her stomach growled loudly. She was really hungry.

Damien took a sip of the soup, which tasted good, but Emma still pretended to be indifferent, showing no intention of joining him.

As he lifted the spoon to his lips again, Damien lost his patience.

Frowning, he stared at Emma in the living room and commanded with a hint of anger, "Come here and eat now! If you won’t eat, my child still needs to."

Emma felt a secret thrill at his words, a strange satisfaction that was almost better than having a wish granted, despite his unfriendly tone.

Emma Hart rose from the sofa, shuffling towards the table with a reluctant air, causing Victoria to almost burst with joy inside.

Seeing Emma’s slow pace, Damien’s irritation flared, threatening, "If you keep up this pace, I’ll have Mrs. Harris dispose of all the food."

Emma hurriedly picked up her pace, rushing to the table and sitting down, protesting, "No, no, no, that would be such a waste."

Unable to hide her smile, Emma, with the innocence of a child, politely requested Mrs. Harris, "Could you please serve me a bowl of the corn soup?"

Mrs. Harris, charmed by Emma’s genuine smile, reflected on how Emma’s expressions always carried an unadorned purity.

Emma rubbed her hands together in anticipation, her eyes sparkling as she watched Mrs. Harris prepare her bowl.

Damien Sterling, watching from the side, was astounded.

It seemed like the woman who was just pouting in a fit of pique had transformed into a cheerful girl eagerly asking for treats, her emotions so plainly visible.

It was always easy to tell when she was happy or not, making her emotions starkly clear.

Damien, with a tender smile that held a deep fondness, tasted the soup.

Whether it was the sweetness of the soup or something else, he felt an unusual sweetness in his heart.

After finishing the meal, Damien, the gentleman, dabbed at his lips with a napkin.

Meanwhile, Emma handed over her bowl, "Mrs. Harris, I’d like another serving."

He had never seen her with such an appetite, wanting two servings. It appeared she really hadn’t eaten all afternoon, as Mrs. Harris suggested.

Watching Emma eagerly devour the sweet soup from Mrs. Harris, Damien realized he was witnessing a different side of her.

Unlike the other women who dined with him, always nibbling delicately, Emma’s hearty appetite was a refreshing change.
