Chapter 108: Asking for a Job
Chapter 108: Asking for a Job
Her family background wasn’t something Emma Hart could choose; it was inherent, a part of her from birth.
Didn’t Damien Sterling understand the saying, "A dog will not forsake its poor home, nor a son despise his ugly mother"?
Perhaps in others’ eyes, this would be a significant concern, but for Emma Hart, any reason Damien Sterling found for them being mismatched only brought her joy.
It served as yet another reason for him to leave her.
While contemplating this, a natural smile formed on Emma’s lips.
The thought of leaving Damien Sterling was the only thing that could make her genuinely happy.
Damien, catching a glimpse of her expression, saw a spark of mischief in her eyes, wondering what scheme she was concocting now.
Facing Damien’s stern look, Emma was reminded of his words, "I’ve got you for life," sending a shiver down her spine.
Shaking off her initial defiance, Emma adopted a composed demeanor towards Damien, "Looks like Mr. Sterling will have to go through trouble to clear this up for me again."
A feigned smile appeared on Emma’s face, her acting flawless. She had Damien’s tendencies figured out; aligning with him seemed to avert any issues.
As the evening sky blushed with the sunset, and geese flew past, Emma, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window with a cup in hand, couldn’t help but admire the view, murmuring, "So beautiful."
In the kitchen, Mrs. Harris was already bustling about, preparing dinner.
Emma approached her, inquiring, "Mrs. Harris, is he coming home tonight?"
"Mm, the master didn’t say he wouldn’t, so he should be."
It seemed Damien’s return was the norm, and his absence for dinner had become the exception.
"Alright, then I’ll help you out."
Since a recent uproar caused by Emma, the household had switched to male bodyguards, each standing guard rigidly at the door.
The number of domestic staff had dwindled, with one falling ill and another returning home for family matters...
"Mrs. Harris, what happened to Nancy? Did she leave for some reason too?"
Nancy was arguably one of the more attractive staff members in the Sterling family mansion.
She occasionally harbored little schemes upon seeing Damien Sterling. Emma was aware but indifferent.
Her feelings for Damien were far from special; in fact, she’d welcome it if someone else attracted his attention, offering her an easy escape.
She couldn’t wish for more.
But Mrs. Harris expressed distaste upon hearing Nancy’s name, "Nancy? That girl had ill intentions, doing little work and focusing solely on attracting Mr. Sterling’s attention."
"How did she leave?"
"Probably because she saw how much Mr. Sterling favored you. Plus, with your natural beauty, grace, and character, she must have realized she stood no chance."
Emma sighed, wishing she had known sooner. How could that girl give up so easily?
Emma almost wished she could bring Nancy back to teach her a lesson, to tell her that persistence could help her achieve her dreams.
Mrs. Harris looked puzzled at Emma’s sigh, not understanding why she would feel that way. Shouldn’t Emma be glad that a girl with designs on Mr. Sterling had left?
Noticing Mrs. Harris busy alone in the kitchen, preparing the vegetables and checking on the soup, Emma moved to help.
"Let me help you," Emma offered.
Mrs. Harris quickly took whatever Emma was holding, "Oh, Emma, you shouldn’t do anything. If anything goes wrong, Mr. Sterling will hold me responsible."
Emma felt as if Mrs. Harris was talking about a dire situation, as if Damien Sterling were some ancient emperor.
"It can’t be that serious, Mrs. Harris," Emma protested, tired of being treated like she couldn’t do anything.
"Of course, it is. Mr. Sterling cares so much about you; how can I be careless?"
He cares? Emma couldn’t quite agree with that.
"Then let me do something simple."
While speaking, Emma searched the kitchen for something she could help with.
Seeing her eagerness, Mrs. Harris smiled, "You really can’t sit still, can you? Help me prepare these Choi Sum then."
"Okay," Emma got to work, grateful for something to keep her busy.
Engrossed in conversation and laughter with Mrs. Harris, Emma didn’t notice Damien Sterling had returned.
Damien watched Emma carefully preparing the Choi Sum, placing them meticulously on a plate, showing a side of her that resembled a diligent homemaker.
Damien, changing into slippers, headed towards the kitchen, "Looks like we’re having bok choy with mushrooms tonight."
His tone was light, resembling that of an ordinary man returning home, not the imposing figure he usually was. Emma hadn’t noticed him until he spoke.
"When did you get back?"
"What? Am I not allowed to come back now?"
Emma felt exasperated at his knack for misinterpreting her words.
"Who am I to dare, considering who Mr. Sterling is?"
"Who is Emma Hart? The lady of this house," Damien Sterling joked, inadvertently acknowledging Emma’s status in his home.
To Damien, Emma had long distinguished herself from the other women outside, a realization he himself hadn’t fully made.
"Hardly, hardly," Emma retorted, having learned to banter with Damien.
Handing the prepared Choi Sum to Mrs. Harris, Emma noticed the affectionate look Mrs. Harris cast their way, akin to a mother watching two beloved children.
This perception unsettled Emma, bewildered by the stark contrast between her view of the world and Mrs. Harris’s, leading to entirely opposite interpretations.
Clearing her throat, Emma steered away from what could be misconstrued as flirtatious banter, "If you don’t want to go to the salon, just call them to come here for treatments."
Understanding Damien’s concern, which arose from seeing her assist Mrs. Harris, Emma quickly clarified, "Mrs. Harris was overwhelmed, and with the staff short-handed, I just lent a hand. She didn’t want me to, but I insisted. Staying idle at home every day is truly boring."
"What do you want to do, then?" Damien casually inquired.
"Get a job!" Emma seized the moment, blurting out her desire, which she had been fretting over how to broach. She hoped her recent behavior had proven her reliability to Damien.
She had resigned herself to her fate, agreeing to stay by Damien’s side obediently.
"Not happening!" Damien’s voice turned cold, his gaze darkening as he met Emma’s hopeful look, outright rejecting her ludicrous idea.
