Chapter 110: Not Foolish at All
Chapter 110: Not Foolish at All
Emma Hart almost finished her new bowl of corn soup when she looked up to find Damien Sterling watching her with an amused expression.
His usually somber eyes were now filled with laughter, giving off an unsettling vibe.
"What... are you doing?"
"Mocking your appetite."
"Well then, I won’t eat anymore, and neither will he," Emma declared, pointing at her belly with a defiant expression on her face.
Damien’s smile broadened, not at all angered by Emma’s defiance.
Instead, he seemed to feel that their connection had deepened through the baby, showing only indulgence in his gaze.
"Would you like another bowl?" he asked gently.
The tenderness in his voice made Emma suspect Damien was possessed; it was so out of character for him.
Looking into Damien’s deep, indulgent eyes, Emma felt as if she was gazing into clear, soothing waters, warming her heart bit by bit.
She was inexplicably drawn to him at that moment, fascinated by his rare display of gentleness.
It must be an illusion.
Emma reminded herself, then calmly turned her head away from the uncharacteristically gentle Damien Sterling.
The real Damien Sterling she knew was domineering, argumentative, and cruel, a devil who would stop at nothing to get his way.
This version of Damien had to be a facade.
"I don’t want any more!" Emma pushed the bowl away and stood up from the table.
It seemed she was avoiding something she feared might happen, guarding against the spread of any deeper feelings between them.
Their relationship was based on a contract, nothing more. Without it, and without the child, they were merely strangers, devoid of any emotional entanglement.
Of this, Emma was absolutely certain.
Watching Emma Hart scurry away like a startled rabbit, Damien Sterling’s smile faded into a rueful grin.
He should have been accustomed to her fear and resistance, shouldn’t he?
Inside the room, Damien had moved his study into their shared space.
Emma had grown used to his presence, feeling the room empty without him.
While Damien was busy checking his emails, Emma was about to take a bath.
Without looking up, Damien suddenly cautioned, "Watch your step."
"Got it," Emma responded softly.
Bathing was indeed a troublesome task for a pregnant woman, wary of slipping and falling.
Just as Emma reached the bathroom door, she let out a shriek.
The sound of something hitting the table, followed by a man rushing over like the wind, filled the room, "What happened?"
Emma looked up to see him, his brows furrowed in concern, which eased only after seeing her unharmed.
With a sigh, he asked, "Were you acting?"
Emma shook off her slipper, which had almost caused her to fall due to being too big and slipping off her foot, "Luckily, I have quick reflexes," she said jokingly.
Her laughter only brought back Damien’s previously dissipated clouds of worry, his expression darkening as he scolded, "Emma Hart, you better be more careful. Do you realize how dangerous falling is for pregnant women?"
So loud! Couldn’t this man ever speak softly? Must he always shout? Emma wished she could send him to the market to help the vendors yell without a megaphone.
Internally rolling her eyes, Emma fixed her slipper and retorted, "Did you know that what pregnant women fear most is being yelled at? It’s startling!"
Damien was taken aback by her comeback.
With a sideways glance at Damien, Emma asked, "Why haven’t you left yet?"
"You’re so clumsy!"
"You’re the clumsy one!" Emma shot back, her annoyance clear.
She had merely been careless, not someone who trips over flat surfaces.
"Am I supposed to bathe now, sir?" Emma Hart held up her pajamas, looking at Damien Sterling. Was he actually planning to stand there and watch her bathe?
"I’ve seen it all before!"
"Pervert!" Emma knew he would say something like that. The bathroom door was transparent, and soon Damien would be standing outside, watching her as if she were live streaming her bath for him.
"Go ahead and bathe," he said nonchalantly, leaning back as if he had settled on something.
This brazenness?
Emma looked at him helplessly, "Mr. Sterling, if I’m not mistaken, you probably have a lot of emails you haven’t replied to yet?"
"I’ve replied to them all."
"You should probably..."
Just as Emma was about to concoct more excuses for him, Damien’s gaze darkened, cutting her off, "Go take your shower!" he urged, each word heavy with insistence.
Emma, clutching her clothes, headed towards the bathroom resigned to start her ’broadcast’.
Then, as if struck by a sudden idea, she walked into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and adjusted the temperature.
"What are you up to now?"
He watched her, wary of her recent surge in cunning ideas that caught him off guard.
"Nothing much." Soon, steam filled the bathroom, fogging up the glass so almost nothing inside was visible.
Emma turned satisfactorily, waved her hand, "Alright, I’m off to shower now."
Watching Emma’s triumphant demeanor, Damien’s gaze shifted to the foggy glass, amused. Who said this woman was foolish?
A smile spread across Damien’s face, preferring this playful side of Emma that added a touch of cuteness to her character.
Inside the bathroom, Emma probably prided herself on her cleverness, happily humming a tune.
Damien made a call to his assistant, who answered within three seconds—a testament to one of Damien’s many strict rules: the assistant must be available 24/7, answering calls within three seconds, or face termination after the second delay.
"Hello, Mr. Sterling, what can I do for you?"
"Find me the best non-slip tiles on the market. I want them installed by tomorrow."
"Which villa, Mr. Sterling?"
"What do you think?"
"Understood," the assistant didn’t dare to ask further. Questions Damien Sterling chose not to answer had to be figured out independently.
After hanging up, the bathroom was filled with the sound of water, indicating Emma was likely finished with her shower.
In his own way, Damien was protecting her, ensuring her environment was as safe as possible, especially now that she was carrying their child.
