Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 946 - 939: Special Supply Weapon
Chapter 946: Chapter 939: Special Supply Weapon
The group busied themselves for the better part of the day, cleaning up the messy scene and burying all the bodies. The main weapons used by both sides in this gunfire were firearms, not explosives, so there was no need to worry about leftover explosive material at the scene, making it somewhat easier than actually cleaning a battlefield.
According to a rough estimate after the fact, the Advance Team had killed about twelve people in this ambush. Including the number Feng killed, the total did not exceed eighteen, which was below the expected number.
One can imagine that killing these less than twenty people took so much effort from the Advance Team, let alone when the enemies deployed their full forces. Other than cheating, Luo’er really couldn’t think of any way to deal with these people.
Moreover, based on his estimation, Feng might not be able to completely handle these one hundred or so people, because no matter how strong she was, her strength was only reflected in her individual ability. With the enemy continuously flooding in, her accumulated mana would eventually be exhausted.
A reconnaissance squad could never contend with a large force, a truth Luo’er was very clear about. That’s why the Advance Team adopted the tactic of swift and fierce attacks, placing their hopes of defeating the enemy on demoralizing them.
Looking at the post-battle statistics, although the enemy’s performance on the battlefield was exceptionally brutal, the actual number of casualties was just over half; roughly half the people still managed to run back. So, expecting to achieve victory by annihilating the enemy was still somewhat naive.
By the afternoon, the Advance Team’s battlefield cleanup was finally complete. They brought back all the weapons and ammunition they had collected to Axia’s residence, and everyone hid in this "air-conditioned room," enjoying the pleasant indoor temperature.
However, Hu Daoke, who was passionate about firearms, had no time to relax. He was frowning and staring at a row of bullets, lost in deep thought.
"What’s wrong? You look a bit unhappy. Did your brain freeze up?" Cheng Ziang walked over, patted his shoulder, and asked.
"No, come over and look at these bullets," Hu Daoke said without looking up.
"Is there a problem?" Cheng Ziang paused, then squatted beside him, curiously examining the row of bullets.
There appeared to be a line of small characters on the bullet casings, seemingly written with a marker. Upon closer inspection, Cheng Ziang noticed a sequence of numbers, including 98, 1918, 1903, and so on.
"What do these numbers mean?" Cheng Ziang scratched his head and asked.
"These are firearm models. I removed these bullets from those guns, so I specifically marked them," Hu Daoke explained, pointing at a few particularly hefty bullets, "Look, these are the bullets I removed from the Springfield and Browning 1918, they should be .30 Springfield rounds by my estimation."
"Then there’s this one, this is the strangest," Hu Daoke continued, pointing at another row of bullets, then said with a serious face, "I found two 98Ks among these firearms, but take a look, what’s the difference between the bullets ejected from the 98Ks and those from the FALs."
"There’s no difference," Cheng Ziang said, his eyes wide and his face confused.
"Hmm hmm hmm..." Hearing his response, Hu Daoke didn’t make a sound but instead revealed an eerie smile.
"What do you mean, are you making fun of me?" Cheng Ziang looked at him and asked with annoyance.
"No no no, there actually is no difference, you answered correctly," Hu Daoke said intently.
"Hey, from the tone of your voice, you’re teasing me, aren’t you?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"The problem lies in there being no difference," Hu Daoke suddenly turned to look at him and said seriously.
"What do you mean?" Cheng Ziang was intimidated by his attitude and stood still, asking.
"I won’t beat around the bush," Hu Daoke coughed, then said seriously, "The Mauser 98K fires 7.92X57 Mauser rifle rounds, while the FAL fires 7.62X51 NATO standard rounds. The numerical difference isn’t big, but the actual difference is very clear. So, logically, the 98K shouldn’t be able to fire 7.62X51 NATO standard rounds, which leads to only one explanation, that these 98K rifles are modified models."
"What kind of significant discovery is this," Cheng Ziang spread his hands and said, "Earthlings have sold a multitude of weapons to the Otherworld; it’s not surprising to find a few 98K rifles that fire 7.62 bullets."
"Humph, humph, humph..." Hu Daoke did not speak, but let out a sound of mockery.
"Stick to the facts, no personal attacks!" Sensing something was off, Cheng Ziang quickly added.
"Have you read the United Nations regulations on the principles of weapon exports to the Otherworld?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Um, I’ve read up on some," Cheng Ziang nodded.
"The Weapon Export Committee has an unwritten rule that Earth’s arms companies should replicate the original weapons for sale as much as possible without making any improvements or adjustments, otherwise, it would not conform to the regulations set before the eighties. According to this rule, the 98K can only fire 7.92 Mauser rounds, not the 7.62 ones."
"What kind of ridiculous rule is that?" Cheng Ziang asked with his hands spread.
"It’s a deliberate difference created to restrict the people of the Otherworld to prevent them from using Earth’s weapons to attack Earth," Luo’er joined in their conversation and explained as he walked.
"Boss is wise!" Hu Daoke gave a thumbs up.
"Stop buttering me up, did you find anything?" Luo’er waved his hand and asked with a smile.
"Well," Hu Daoke nodded, then continued, "Logically, if these mercenaries had bought the 98K rifles from the market in the Otherworld, they should only be able to get the 7.92 version. But now they have the 7.62 version, which means there’s only one explanation: these are special supply versions."
"Special supply versions?" Cheng Ziang turned to Luo’er and asked.
"Just like when we first came to this world, the weaponry the headquarters equipped us with, which appears to be no different from the weapons on the market, but have been modernized internally," Luo’er explained.
"Exactly. For Earthlings, the special supply versions are usually aimed at their own armed forces in the Otherworld. And the reason why there are 7.62 versions of the 98K rifle, I think there’s only one answer: standardization of ammunition to facilitate resupply," Hu Daoke raised his index finger and said.
"Which means..."
"I’m one hundred percent certain that these people are definitely a military force of the CIA, which is why they have access to custom versions of Earth’s weapons," Hu Daoke stated confidently.
"That unwritten rule of the Weapon Export Committee actually targets the issue of ammunition," Luo’er explained to Cheng Ziang’s puzzled face, "If the calibers of all the weapons sold by Earthlings were standardized, then there would only be a few standard types of bullets on the market. This might not necessarily be good for Earthlings, but for the people from the Otherworld, it would undoubtedly be exciting news, because it would mean that their weapons and ammunition could be standardized and they would no longer have to worry about logistical issues."
"Selling weapons to the Otherworld is actually something Earthlings have mixed feelings about. On one hand, they can’t bear to give up such a large market, and on the other, they worry that the people of the Otherworld will bite back with the weapons they acquire. So there’s an unspoken rule that only original unaltered weapons may be sold, leading to an overflow of different calibers in the Otherworld market. As a result, if the people of the Otherworld wanted to accumulate weaponry and ammunition to counterattack Earth, they would have to prepare many different calibers of ammunition, which would undoubtedly be a logistical nightmare."
"I see..." Cheng Ziang nodded.
"This is just one of the many ways Earthlings are nasty to the people of the Otherworld. To sum up, if a weapon appears with a caliber that is not supposed to belong to it, then there is only one explanation: the weapon is a special supply weapon. And when Earthlings send special supply weapons to the Otherworld, they usually have political motives, and with a little investigation, one can trace it back to the source," Luo’er continued.
"So," Hu Daoke said expressionlessly continuing the conversation, "the actions of these people are most likely supported by the CIA, including supplies and financial support. The CIA is probably counting on them to capture Axia and find the Holy Book of the Ancestors."
"Wasn’t that already a foregone conclusion?" Cheng Ziang shrugged.
"No, now it can be completely confirmed; before, it was only speculation," Luo’er shook his head and said.
