Chapter 916: Chapter 909: The Living Puppet

"It’s okay, it’s okay, he’s already dead," Luo’er swallowed hard, gently patting Baiyue’s back to comfort her.

Luo’er mustered his courage and stepped closer, taking in the full view of the mummy. Clad in armor not of this era, it lay serenely within the sarcophagus, hands crossed over its chest, tightly gripping an ancient-looking longsword.

Although the tomb was very damp, the interior of the sarcophagus remained strangely dry, and the body had turned into a mummy, seemingly unaffected by the moisture outside. Even the longsword in the mummy’s hands remained razor-sharp, showing no signs of rust.

Immediately after pushing, Luo’er regretted his bold action as it was indeed reckless, and he didn’t understand what had been going through his mind at that moment.

What he found surprising was that the sarcophagus had no traps or mechanisms; he managed to open it directly without triggering any signs of a magic array trap.

Luo’er noticed a yellowed book lying next to the mummy’s head, not thick, less than a centimeter in height. But the content on the cover made Luo’er exclaim involuntarily.

"The Ancestors’ Holy Book, found it!"

Luo’er’s voice was tinged with excited joy as he looked at the book’s cover, which bore a line of Ancient Aud text.

"Indeed, heavens never seal all exits," Luo’er said excitedly, his hands trembling as he reached out to grasp the book he had longed for in his dreams.

Baiyue lifted her head and only then noticed at the end of the tomb chamber, directly in front of the sarcophagus, was a mural they had previously overlooked, and the content of the mural was much more sinister.

The main subjects of the painting were two individuals, the General and that strange woman. However, unlike the earlier murals, this time the woman wore a lavish and intricate garment, with a long skirt trailing all the way to the floor.

The entire mural was disturbingly chilling; it depicted the General kneeling on one knee, holding aloft a longsword in his right hand, while offering a bleeding heart from his left hand to the woman standing beside him. Piled like mountains behind the General were the bodies, with grotesquely exaggerated pointed ears and pale skin, clearly recognizable as Snow Elves.

Baiyue inhaled sharply; she observed that each Snow Elf had a bloody gash across the chest, presumably the work of the General, who was carving out their hearts to present to the extravagantly dressed woman.

What were they doing?

Baiyue’s eyes widened, her skin crawled, and she couldn’t comprehend the scene. According to her hypothesis, the woman was possibly consuming these hearts, while the General harvested them from the chests of the Snow Elves for her consumption.

If that were the case, then this woman was a thoroughgoing cannibalistic monster. Strangely though, why would the General support her, why would he permit her to interact with others?

In other murals, the woman always appeared naked, and others seemed indifferent to her presence. If the woman were a terrifying cannibalistic demon, others should surely fear her; how could they willingly have peaceful interactions with her?

Or was this merely artistic hyperbole, with the murals conveying an entirely different message?

"Eh!" At that moment, Axia, who had also ascended the steps to Baiyue’s side, couldn’t help but gasp in surprise upon seeing the mural across from the sarcophagus.

"What’s the matter?" Baiyue asked, looking at her.

"No, nothing..." Axia muttered, her brow furrowed as she stared intently at the mural.

Meanwhile, back with Tangmo, she was utterly puzzled by the significance of the mannequin before her. Its metallic body was inscribed with complex runes which she assessed to be a combination of defense runes. Such runes are commonly seen on rune carriages these days, and their strength is so great they could even withstand a direct RPG shot.

But what was the purpose of inscribing these runes on a burial mannequin, after all, it was simply an accompaniment to the tomb and there seemed to be no need to exert the effort for these embellishments.

Or could it be that this doll was actually capable of moving, perhaps even engaging in battle, and therefore had runes etched into it to enhance its strength?

At that thought, Tangmo shivered and instinctively took a few steps back. However, due to the slippery ground, she lost her footing and landed squarely on her backside.

Wincing in pain, Tangmo rubbed her bottom. The flashlight on her shoulder had been jarred off course by the fall, casting its beam directly onto the mural behind her. As she adjusted the light, Tangmo took notice of the strange paintings.

Standing up, she looked up at the murals before her. Like Luo’er and Baiyue, her attention was quickly captured by the naked woman depicted in the paintings, but unlike them, Tangmo felt a strong sense of déjà vu, as if she had seen this woman somewhere before.

Suddenly, a light bulb went off in her mind, and she understood instantly. She turned her head sharply to look at the metallic doll she had been scrutinizing on the ground just moments before.

"Yes, it’s her, it is her, the one in the mural is her!" Tangmo cried out in panic.

"What’s wrong?" Hearing Tangmo’s panicked voice, Baiyue turned to look at her and asked with concern.

"Luo’er," Tangmo didn’t bother to respond to Baiyue, instead she hurriedly shouted out a warning, "Get away from there, don’t stand close, watch out for that woman, that doll, she’s alive!"

Just as she screamed, a dark shadow sprung up in an instant, pouncing towards Luo’er who was trying to extract the Ancestors’ Holy Book, and a harsh metallic scraping sounded through the air.

"Look out!" In the instant the shadow was about to hit Luo’er, Baiyue bravely stepped in front to intercept it with her body, hoping to protect Luo’er from the attack.

However, she evidently underestimated the attacker’s strength. The assailant swung its arm viciously, landing a heavy blow on Baiyue’s shoulder. She was sent flying like a kite with its string cut, crashing into a wall.

Although Axia provided some cushioning for her, she too was slammed heavily into the corner of the room. Regardless, Baiyue was still hit by the force, flying into a mural before finally crashing heavily to the floor.

"How..." Luo’er turned around in surprise and before he could fully articulate his question, his throat was gripped by a cold metallic claw that tightened its hold, threatening to crush his neck.

"Luo’er! I am going to fight you!" Seeing Luo’er being attacked, Tangmo didn’t think; she drew her gun and fired several shots at the attacker.

The loud gunshots echoed through the tomb, but her firing was ineffective. Bullets struck the attacker and immediately sparked on impact, deflected by the Defense Runes on her body.

The attacker, apparently not enjoying being shot at, violently picked up Luo’er and with a strong flick of her hand, hurled him directly at Tangmo.

The two collided heavily, and as Tangmo tried to catch Luo’er, they were both carried by the force into a corner.

In less than ten seconds, the attacker had subdued everyone who entered the burial chamber. In this environment, the Advance Team stood almost no chance against her.

Groaning in pain, Tangmo struggled to get up off the floor. Only then did she get a complete look at the attacker.

Indeed, it was the metallic doll that had been kneeling in front of the sarcophagus, the same woman who repeatedly appeared in the murals.

She had a streamlined figure, completely forged from a special metal, with numerous joints in her body, making her almost as flexible as a human.

Although made entirely of metal, she possessed a delicate face with a small aesthetically pleasing nose and large eyes. Her hair was a single metallic protrusion that suggested a short hairstyle.
