Chapter 915: Chapter 908: The Strange "Person
Upon reflection, Kedal metal’s piercing strength was so potent, yet it did not appear frequently in the wars of the Otherworld. Luo’er believed that, ultimately, it was the metal’s brittleness that caused this.
It was said that what made you strong could also bring you down. The piercing strength of Kedal metal stemmed from its brittleness, but it was this very brittleness that limited its applications. This characteristic was like a double-edged sword, capable of injuring others but also likely to cause self-harm easily.
Moreover, as wars gradually became aristocratized with a large amount of Rune Armor being used in defense, Kedal metal, which could only penetrate physical defenses, lost its appeal. The northern conquest of the Snow Domain by the Aud Empire was probably the last swan song for this metal.
Fortunately, all that glitters is gold. This unfortunate metal, unappreciated in the Otherworld, was very much liked by the people of Earth. The brittleness of Kedal metal was also applicable to the physical laws of Earth, which made it immediately become a favorite there.
In the realm of imagining war weapons, Earthlings were much more formidable than those of the Otherworld, with much broader and more inventive minds.
Clearly, the General had not continued to be lucky. In the next fresco, his death was recorded. Although his army ultimately defeated the enemy, he himself no longer had the strength to return, eternally resting on a blood-soaked battlefield, surrounded by his subordinates.
Surrounded by the corpses of enemies which were like mountains, victory flags fluttered in the sky. This seemingly beautiful scene highlighted his tragic end.
"This General fought for the Empire to the south and to the north, eventually falling on the battlefield of the Snow Domain. Moved by his loyalty, they buried him here with his soldiers," Baiyue muttered to herself as she looked at the fresco.
"The glory of the Empire is, to the Snow Elves, a disaster," Luo’er couldn’t help but sigh, then subconsciously glanced at Axia. She was staring blankly at the fresco, and it was unclear what she was thinking at the moment.
On the other side, Tangmo examined the automaton carefully. It had an overall metallic sheen, and one could also feel the texture of metal when touching it with a finger.
It knelt quietly in front of the sarcophagus, head bowed, hands resting on its thighs, and Tangmo could not discern its appearance. The automaton’s joints were spherical, containing complex articulations which, in theory, should allow for free movement.
The more Tangmo inspected the automaton, the more she felt a sense of awe, for she noticed that this automaton might be more than just an automaton. If she were to describe it using an Earth concept, it should probably be called a robot.
Yes, a robot, a robot made of metal.
Tangmo quickly came to this realization and continued to look over the automaton. She estimated its height to be around 1.7 meters, built to true human proportions. What surprised her most was that the automaton had complete fingers with joints—if it wasn’t a robot, why would its finger joints be so finely made?
Besides, the main point was that, considering the technology of the Aud people of the time, Tangmo felt it was unlikely they had the ability to create such a life-like automaton. Even if they could create one, they surely would not be able to solve the issue of articulation, because there was no need for it.
The Terracotta Warriors also belonged to the funerary objects, but they were true automatons, made entirely of clay ceramics, with limbs that could not move. If the role of this automaton was the same as that of the Terracotta Warriors, then why would the Aud people go to the trouble of designing such a complex joint structure?
Or could it be that this automaton was actually capable of movement?
At this thought, Tangmo couldn’t help but shiver in fear, her goosebumps springing up. She looked at the automaton with a hint of panic, discovering something new.
The automaton had a relatively slender figure, with hips proportionally wider than the width of the shoulders. Although its face was unclear, from the contours of the chest area, she could roughly judge that the automaton represented a female figure.
"Hiss..." At this realization, Tangmo’s mind, which was never quite simple, immediately began to entertain some disturbing speculations.
After examining the frescos here, Baiyue and the others, including Luo’er, went to observe another wall. The scenes displayed on this wall were much more peculiar.
The frontal frescoes contained few military elements; instead, they depicted very common scenes including hunting, dining, reading, and even the process of learning magic.
However, what they found most strange was the presence of one character with an exceptionally high appearance rate across most of the frescoes.
From the depiction on the mural, the subject appeared to be a slender and delicate woman. However, what was difficult to look at was that in most of the murals, she was in a state of undress, which puzzled Luo’er greatly.
In the majority of the scenes on this mural, everyone was clothed, except for this one woman who wore nothing at all, and more strangely. Neither the general nor anyone else in the scenes seemed to notice the unclothed woman, as if it was perfectly normal.
"Was it a tradition of the Aud Empire at the time, or is it a custom of the Snow Elves?" Luo’er narrowed his eyes and couldn’t help but ask aloud.
"Don’t get any funny ideas; the Snow Elves do not have such a vulgar custom!" Axia frowned and stared at the mural with an expressionless face.
"Then it’s strange. Why do these people ignore the woman without clothes?" Luo’er asked, perplexed.
"Maybe she isn’t human!" Baiyue suddenly spoke up.
"What do you mean?" Luo’er was startled and quickly asked.
"I can’t explain it clearly," Baiyue said, squinting and frowning deeply. After thinking for a long time, she bit her lip and said, "I don’t know why, but I don’t find it strange either; it all seems very normal."
From the woman’s behavior, she seemed to be serving the general, but if that was the case, why didn’t the general give her clothes to wear? This was what baffled Luo’er.
Additionally, there was a particularly interesting scene in the mural. The general stood outside the military camp, looking up at the sky, with the woman quietly standing behind him.
What made this scene peculiar to Luo’er was that, based on the depiction, their location was supposed to be in the Snow Domain, and it was heavily snowing. Yet even so, the woman had not a single piece of clothing on her body, something Luo’er simply could not imagine.
Even though the Snow Elves were resistant to cold, they could not bounce around the Snow Domain without any clothes. Here, the Snow Elves were only more cold-resistant than the Human Race, not completely immune to cold.
Moreover, the woman did not seem like a Snow Elf based on the depictions in the mural. The characteristics of the Snow Elves, with their exaggerated pointed ears and white skin, were magnified countless times, yet none of these exaggerated features were apparent on the woman.
"Maybe she really isn’t human." After a long contemplation, Luo’er also voiced a view similar to Baiyue’s.
"Let’s check out that sarcophagus," Luo’er said, giving up on trying to understand any further, and turned to Baiyue.
"Mhm." Baiyue nodded and then followed Luo’er towards the platform at the far end of the tomb chamber.
Although there was a thin layer of water pooling inside the tomb chamber, once they ascended the steps, the platform where the sarcophagus was placed was quite dry. It seemed that the platform was designed to prevent the sarcophagus from being submerged in the water.
The two stepped onto the platform and arrived in front of the huge sarcophagus. It was a very large sarcophagus, over two meters in length and over a meter in both width and height.
The sarcophagus was made of a lustrous metallic material, its surface engraved with complex reliefs, the entire sarcophagus covered with uneven traces of these carvings. However, due to the overall dark material of the sarcophagus, they could not discern the meaning behind the reliefs.
Standing in front of the sarcophagus, Luo’er, without knowing what he was thinking, directly stepped forward to push and pull the lid, and to his surprise, the lid actually moved.
With less than half of his strength, he easily slid open the lid of the sarcophagus. Instantly, a mummy that had long since turned into a skeleton shockingly appeared before everyone.
"Ah!" Baiyue screamed, although she was usually brave, she was still startled at this moment and threw herself into Luo’er’s arms.
