Chapter 813: Chapter 806: Interrogation

"You’re back!" The newcomer looked up at the two, and her usually impassive face immediately took on an expression of joy.

It was probably only in Luo’er’s presence that Feng would show such animated emotions. Most of the time, she was so indifferent that others might think she was just a doll.

"Why did you jump down from such a high place? You could have gotten hurt," Luo’er said with a slightly reproving look as he scanned her from head to toe.

"No, no harm done," Feng replied excitedly, shaking her head.

"How are they? You didn’t encounter any trouble, did you?" Luo’er looked up before asking.

"No trouble, nothing wrong all day yesterday, and nothing at night," Feng said earnestly, shaking her head.

"Good." Luo’er paused for a moment, pondering. He seemed hesitant to speak. After a while, he decided to let Feng in on their suspicions.

"Feng, what I am about to tell you, you must absolutely not reveal to Eve and her brother, understood?" Luo’er leaned in close and whispered.

"Mhm!" Feng nodded earnestly, her eyes wide.

"Listen carefully, we suspect that Eve might be the enemy’s spy. Do you know what a spy is?" Luo’er asked.

"I don’t know," Feng shook her head honestly.

"It’s someone who deceives us, gains our trust, and then waits for an opportunity to harm us," Luo’er explained.

"Then, should we kill her?" Feng paused, growing tense immediately, and with a clank, she was ready to draw her sword.

"Calm down, calm down," Luo’er pressed down on the hilt of her sword and continued in a lower voice, "I’m not telling you this to have you go and slaughter her, but rather so that you too are on your guard against her and don’t trust her too much. We don’t have proof that she is a spy right now, so we mustn’t harm her based on this alone. Do you understand what I mean?"

"Uh, we pretend we don’t know?" Feng asked, tilting her head and hesitating for a moment.

"Exactly, exactly, that’s the idea," Luo’er said joyfully, "On the surface, we still treat them as one of us, but we must keep an eye on their every move to find their slip-up. Only then can we fully ascertain her identity."

"Oh..." Feng nodded, somewhat perplexed.

"Anyway, continue to guard them. On one hand, you’re ensuring their safety, and on the other, you’re keeping watch over them. If they do anything out of line, don’t rush into action; come and notify me at once, you got it?" Luo’er instructed.

"Mhm," Feng nodded seriously.

"Good, let’s head upstairs," Luo’er said with satisfaction, having seen Feng grasp his intentions, and then led the two towards the upper floors.

"Fula," while ascending the stairs and ensuring that there was no one around, Luo’er began to softly call for Fulajie’er.

"What’s up?" Fulajie’er responded.

"Your task for the next few days is to keep a constant watch on Eve, to see if there’s anything suspicious about her," Luo’er paused, then continued, "Also, when you find a chance, check them for runes. Under our surveillance, if they wish to contact the Central Intelligence Agency, they can only do so through magical messengers."

"I understand," Fulajie’er replied, uncharacteristically without reluctance.

Walking along the corridor, they reached a door. Luo’er and Hu Daoke exchanged glances before arriving at the door of Eve and her brother’s room, where Luo’er took a step forward and knocked lightly.

After about two minutes, the door opened. Eve, rubbing her bleary eyes, immediately showed a delighted expression upon seeing them: "You finally returned. I was worried something had happened to you."

"How did you know something would happen to us?" Luo’er asked casually as he walked into the room.

"Eh, because you never came back, so I thought something had happened to you," Eve replied without any hint of caution.

"Eve," Luo’er looked around the room before turning back to Eve and asked seriously, "How many times did you have contact with the Booze Ghost Gang before you met us?"

"A few times, do you mean being chased? Hmm, let me think..." Eve said, looking up in thought for a moment then continued, "Well, I think it was just twice. By the third time, you guys had already shown up."

"How did you manage to escape their pursuit?" Luo’er pressed on.

"How did I escape? Well," Eve thought for a moment then answered honestly, "I ran away. They didn’t seem to know where I lived at that time, so both encounters were on the street targeting only me, and then I just hid everywhere to avoid their chase."

"You were able to outrun their encirclement?" Luo’er asked incredulously.

"Of course, no problem. I grew up in Holy Heart City," Eve replied matter-of-factly, then furrowed her brows and looked at Luo’er, "What’s with you, why do I feel like you’re acting weird?"

"Oh, it’s nothing. I was just wondering why the Booze Ghost Gang and those behind them are so desperate to take your life," Luo’er explained.

"How should I know," Eve frowned, looking troubled, "If it’s just because of my association with Fu’en, they’re surely making too big a deal out of me. I have nothing to do with him."

"Did you and Fu’en... have any feud?" Luo’er hesitated before asking.

Upon hearing Luo’er’s question, Eve glared at him, then quickly averted her gaze and turned away, saying angrily, "I don’t know, and I don’t want to talk about him."

"Did you meet those Earth people with him before you parted ways, those who want to kill you?" Luo’er continued probing.

"What do you mean," Eve blinked, then frowned and stared at Luo’er, "Are you suspecting me?"

"No, I’m just purely curious," Luo’er said, waving his hand, "If you say you have nothing to do with Fu’en, then how exactly did those Earth people come to know about your existence? Could it be that Fu’en leaked it?"

"If it was him, it’s a possibility," Eve said hesitantly, "I was just a guide taking him to find the Ancient Scripture; I don’t know anything about the rest."

"Then how did he know that you were aware of the Ancient Scripture’s whereabouts?" Luo’er asked further.

"I don’t know either, he came to me. He told me at that time that he had searched for hundreds of Snow Elves and their half-breeds before finally finding me," Eve said after some thought.

"Why did he specifically want to find Snow Elves?" Luo’er inquired.

"Because," Eve lowered her head, pondering for a moment, then with a furrowed brow replied, "He said, because of the Church Court’s purge, the Ancient Scripture had almost vanished in the North, and only in the ancient tombs of the Aud Empire’s period was there a chance to find the book."

"Why the Snow Domain then?" Luo’er persisted.

Eve sighed and continued, "Since the advent of winter, the Snow Domain has been sealed by heavy snow, and its environment has become increasingly harsh. The Aud people have left the Snow Domain one after another, and only the Snow Elves who can withstand the cold and snowstorms can survive in such a place, making the Snow Domain a lawless territory of the Aud Empire. With the fragmentation of the Aud Empire, the Aud people eventually lost control over the Snow Domain. Since the Aud couldn’t control it, neither could the Church Court purge any forbidden books from the tombs in the Snow Domain."

"So Fu’en was actually just taking a chance in the beginning," Luo’er mused to himself.

The advent of winter that Eve spoke of must refer to the Little Ice Age. Although the laws of physics in Otherworld are different from Earth, there are many aspects of climate that can be referenced.

Otherworld also has continual cycles of climate fluctuations, and during the Aud Empire’s reign, the entire Otherworld happened to be going through a Little Ice Age, leading to an extremely harsh climate in the Snow Domain and ultimately causing the Aud Empire to lose their reign over it.

Snow Domain, as the name suggests, means a territory covered with snow, and it’s a term that is interpreted figuratively. At the height of the Aud Empire’s power, its influence extended all the way to the unfrozen port of Luscaque in the far North, but ultimately they were defeated by the climate.
