Chapter 814: Chapter 807: Weapon Docking
"And then, you took him to the Snow Domain to look for the Ancient Scripture?" Luo’er continued to ask.
"Yes," Eve nodded before adding, "My grandmother took part in the construction of tombs in the Snow Domain, so my mother is very familiar with the layout of these tombs and the corresponding mechanisms and traps. She told me, if one day I couldn’t make ends meet, to go to those tombs in the Snow Domain to find treasures enough for my own use, and then make my way to the south from Luscaque’s port."
"It looks like your mother gave you an unusual way out..." Luo’er said with a wave of his hand.
"No choice," Eve shrugged, then continued, "That’s what Snow Elves do, when they can’t make a living they look for valuable things in the tombs to sell; most of the stuff related to the Aud Empire on the black market now comes from the Snow Domain."
"This..." Luo’er was momentarily at a loss for words. In his mind, the Elf Race was supposed to be a noble and elegant people, so how come they were engaged in tomb raiding, an act only done by the lowest of the low?
Noticing Luo’er’s skepticism, Eve went on to explain, "Don’t be so surprised. Snow Elves practice sky burial and wouldn’t construct a tomb for themselves as a final resting place. The majority of tombs in the Snow Domain actually belonged to the Aud people. During the era of the Aud Empire, the empire sent a large number of migrants to the Snow Domain and ruled over it for a hundred years, resulting in the natural creation of many tombs."
"No wonder..." Luo’er nodded, muttering to himself.
According to Eve’s explanation, Snow Elves practiced sky burial, which meant offering their mortal remains to carnivorous wild animals or, in other words, returning to nature.
This practice was actually determined by the local climate and culture. The Snow Domain is located in high latitudes, and with the onset of the Little Ice Age, most of its territory is permafrost. Due to the extreme cold, bodies would not decompose after death, and digging through permafrost is also very challenging. Hence, sky burial developed as an alternative; otherwise, bodies buried underground might not decay for years, even decades.
Of course, the Snow Domain isn’t entirely covered by snow. There are two seasons within a year in the Snow Domain, with winter comprising three-quarters of the year and summer the remaining quarter. As long as they could seize this quarter of the year for planting and cultivation, they could just about save enough provisions to get through the coming winter.
The Snow Domain became the land of the Snow Elves also because of their racial characteristics. A common feature of the Elf Race is their low fertility rate, which means their population wouldn’t suddenly explode beyond the carrying capacity of the land.
"If you go to the Snow Domain now, can you assure me that you’ll find the Ancient Scripture?" Luo’er asked again.
"I..." Eve hesitated for a moment, then, biting her lip, said, "I can try..."
"Try?" Luo’er repeated her words, somewhat speechlessly.
"As long as you can help me get Jora home, I will stick with you and look for the Ancient Scripture until we find it," Eve suddenly said excitedly.
Hearing her assurance, Luo’er didn’t immediately respond but exchanged a covert glance with Hu Daoke, then nodded skeptically.
"Just stay put here, we will find a way to get you out of the city," Luo’er left this behind, then turned and headed for the door.
Before opening the door and leaving, Luo’er stopped in place for a moment of silence, then, without looking back, added, "Tomorrow we’re going to attack the Booze Ghost Gang with the Hound Gang. Feng will stay here to protect you—don’t leave the inn recklessly."
After finishing, he didn’t wait for Eve to respond, simply walked out of the room and into the adjacent room, pushing the door open and entering.
"Boss, are we really going to fight with the Booze Ghost Gang?" Hu Daoke followed closely behind Luo’er, carefully shut the door, and then asked, his eyes wide with excitement.
"I just wanted to test her, don’t get so excited," Luo’er said, looking at him with mild amusement.
"Oh..." Disappointed by Luo’er’s response, Hu Daoke’s face fell.
"If all the trouble we’ve run into these last few days is her doing, then by sending Feng away and going after the Booze Ghost Gang alone, she should make a move," Luo’er theorized.
"Fula." Saying that, Luo’er softly called out.
"I’m here!" With no outsiders present, Fulajie’er appeared floating in front of Luo’er.
"From now on, keep an eye on her twenty-four hours a day. Do not retreat without my order—see if she tries to send out any information," Luo’er ordered.
"Oh." Fulajie’er obediently acknowledged, then looked down, puzzled, continuously twisting her fingers.
"What’s wrong?" Luo’er asked.
"Uh, what time is it now, and then, and then add twenty-four hours..." Fulajie’er struggled to calculate these annoying numbers.
"Twenty-four hours is one day and one night; you don’t need to specifically add the current time. I meant for you to watch her the entire day and night without slackening..." Luo’er explained with a mix of laughter and helplessness.
"Then you could have just said ’one day and one night’..." Embarrassed by the misunderstanding, Fulajie’er pouted and muttered.
"Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear." Luo’er apologized, his face full of contrition.
"No, no, I guess that’s something I’ve learned," Fulajie’er shook her head, her face expressing satisfaction.
"I’m sorry to inconvenience you during this period," Luo’er continued.
"No, I’m happy to be of help," Fulajie’er said shyly, fidgeting mid-air.
"Boss, today we..." Hu Daoke gestured with some hesitation.
"Today we just need to take Azita to get her weapons fitted," Luo’er said.
"Then, should we..." Hu Daoke gestured even more anxiously.
*Sigh*, "I give up, let’s go take a look while we’re at it," Luo’er shook his head resignedly. He knew what Hu Daoke wanted to do and decided to indulge his wish.
After a brief stay, Luo’er left the inn with Hu Daoke to meet with the Purification Legion for coordination.
They arrived at a warehouse by the river, where currently over a dozen soldiers in riot gear from the Purification Legion were present. It seemed they were somewhat more accepting of this attire, so not one had changed into traditional drill uniforms yet.
An officer-like man was directing the soldiers to stack boxes of weapons and ammunition evenly for easy access at any time.
The soldiers at the warehouse door obviously recognized Luo’er, so they didn’t stop him and let him enter the warehouse directly. After the two entered, the officer immediately noticed their arrival and stepped forward, bowing respectfully, "You must be Captain Luo’er, I’ve heard a lot about you."
"You’re too kind; we’re grateful for your assistance here," Luo’er replied politely.
"Oh, no need for such courtesy, Captain Luo’er. We’ve fought side by side before; I wonder if you remember," the officer asked politely.
"Uh, oh, you also took part in the epidemic area’s operation? Then it seems we are comrades-in-arms," Luo’er was taken aback for a moment but quickly recovered, saying with a forced smile.
"Of course," the officer smiled and then said thoughtfully, "If it weren’t for Captain Luo’er back then, I probably would’ve died in that jungle."
"Hey, oh, oh," Luo’er had a sudden look of realization and pointed at the officer with surprise, "You’re, that soldier?"
"Yes," the officer smiled and continued, "I owe a great deal to Captain Luo’er and everyone else; otherwise, I wouldn’t even know how I died. I shall forever remember this great kindness and debt in my heart."
"No need to be so polite; it was my duty. After all, you are soldiers we trained," Luo’er waved his hands, scratching his head as he spoke.
The officer nodded with a smile, then straightened his face and said, "Captain Luo’er, all the weapons are here. Would you like to check them?"
"No, there’s no need; I trust your work," Luo’er said with a smile.
"That’s good," the officer nodded and then continued, "I don’t know if Captain Luo’er needs security; we could guard this place for a while for you."
"Oh, no need for that, you all can head back first; I’ll contact you if there’s anything," Luo’er waved his hand.
