Chapter 797: Chapter 790: Tavern Threat
Fortunately, it seems the enemy hadn’t set an ambush here. Maybe they didn’t anticipate this, or perhaps they just didn’t intend to act in this place.
No matter how you look at it, at this point, Luoer and the others must get to the slum quickly to ensure their safety to the greatest extent possible.
Luoer doesn’t believe they have successfully escaped the adversaries’ sight. The fact that these people could find Eve and her brother in just a day proves that they have a lot of contacts in the East City. It’s difficult to stay hidden from them.
But is the bustling commercial area unsafe, and does fleeing to the chaotic slums mean safety? Yes, that’s exactly what Luoer was thinking. Because he is very clear, to avoid these people, they need to find forces that dare to confront these people and seek shelter, and the best choice right now is Azita, the boss of the Hound Gang, whom he let go back to Holy Heart City.
Luoer’s goal was clear. They should try to flee to the Hound Gang’s territory, which would make the Booze Ghost Gang think twice about pursuing them.
If the CIA risking exposing its involvement to deploy the secular army, Luoer wouldn’t suggest letting the Church Court perform another clean-up operation. Both sides have done their damage, so neither side gains an advantage. However, since Eve is in Luoer’s hands, overall, they are still in a better position.
Facing the road ahead, the group carefully headed towards the slums. As they walked, Eve began to act strange and couldn’t resist inquiring Luoer, "Where are we going?"
"To the slums," Luoer replied truthfully.
"To the slums? Didn’t you say you were going to help us?" Eve was instantly taken aback upon hearing Luoer’s words.
"Exactly. That’s why I’m taking you to the slums," said Luoer with a shrug.
"But we just escaped from the slums. Now we’re going back. Don’t you know how dangerous it is there?" Eve was looking at him anxiously.
"Of course, I know. But the most dangerous place might also be the safest," Luoer replied nonchalantly.
"You better know what you’re doing. If you hand us over to the Otherworlders, I won’t rest even as a ghost," Eve ground out through clenched teeth.
"Don’t worry. I keep my word. I said I would help you, and I won’t break that promise. So now, all you need to do is follow my instructions," Luoer assured.
Upon hearing his words, Eve pressed her lips together and ultimately, she fell silent and didn’t continue arguing.
After experiencing Feng’s terrifying fighting power, she had lost the courage to oppose Luoer. All she could do now was pray that Luoer wouldn’t harm them, as there was nothing else she could do.
Upon reaching the edge of the slum, they all took in the familiar stench. However, right now they didn’t have any other place to go, so they gritted their teeth and marched onward. In such an environment, Hu Daoke was more worried about stepping on dung than encountering an ambush.
The slum was as filthy, messy, and smelly as ever. Various illegal construction sites were scattered around, and the dark, polluted water gathered into small streams full of dreadful smells. There were also clusters of unknown wildflowers.
Actually, Luoer and the others had another ace up their sleeve – the ultra-mobility devices that they had just equipped. Without the constraint of Eve and her brother, they wouldn’t be afraid of this environment, because their ultra-mobility devices could give them superior mobility.
After entering the slum, Luoer ordered everyone to take up arms, always on guard. This place was not like the commercial area, danger lurked every corner. Because it was filthy and disorderly, even the patrol cops were reluctant to come in, so using weapons here wasn’t that dangerous.
All the way, Luoer had Fulajie’er scout ahead, as the slums were complex with many illegally-constructed buildings. Without Fulajie’er and Feng, the chief scouts, relying only on him and Hu Daoke, they would have collapsed already.
With them, Luoer could advance towards the predetermined location at a relatively safe pace. The first place he went to was the Dead Cat Tavern by the river.
As he pushed open the door, the dark environment inside made it hard for him to see clearly. Luoer went into the tavern, which was much busier than the day before. A couple sailors were gathered around a table, and two big burly men were at the bar counter.
"Yo, look at the pair of pretty little faces that just walked in. Hey, it looks like one’s a half-elf..." The tavern suddenly got lively as the group entered, and the crude sailors started their lewd chattering as soon as they saw Feng and Eve.
Luoer quickly stepped forward, then drew from his waist a pistol equipped with a silencer, pressed it against the forehead of a sailor sitting closest to him at the bar, and then coldly asked, "Who knows where the big boss of the Hound Gang is?"
Everyone was startled by his action, these burly, foul-mouthed men all flinched even faster than anyone else when confronted with real danger.
"I’ll ask again, who knows where the big boss of the Hound Gang is, or rather, who knows someone from the Hound Gang?" Luoer looked around at the everyone, and asked again coldly.A few sailors at the back fell silent, exchanged glances with one another, then simultaneously got up, ready to run to the door.
"Watch yourself fellas, my gun doesn’t necessarily aim away." Hu Daoke stood smiling at the door, the muzzle of his submachine gun aimed at them. At the same time, Feng stepped to the side and with a clear ringing sound drew his long knife from its sheath, leaving his threat unspoken.
"No, I don’t know anything, please spare me..." pleaded the burly man with Luoer’s gun pressed against his head.
"Really don’t know?" Luoer glanced at him, then sneered, "You all used to be under the Hound Gang before they were wiped out, how come you switched sides so quickly now?"
"I, I really don’t know," the burly man was almost crying with fright, pleading, "We’re just workers, we follow whoever pays us, we have nothing to do with whatever happened to the Hound Gang."
"Alright, all of you, get out!" Hearing his words, Luoer shrugged, pulled back his gun and said.
"Thank you, sir!" The relieved sailor broke out in a cold sweat. After being set free, he quickly jumped up from the chair and ran disorderly towards the doorway.
Upon Luoer’s signal, Hu Daoke and Feng also made way at the entrance, and so the relieved sailors scattered out of the pub like arrows released from bowstrings.
"Boss, do you remember me?" Watching the sailors leave, Luoer casually tossed his pistol onto the bar and looked at the bartender to ask.
"Yes, y-yes, y-yes...." The bartender was shaking with fear, barely able to speak.
"Alright, I’m not going to make it hard for you, I just want to ask you, do you know the whereabouts of the Hound Gang? Don’t tell me you don’t know, I won’t believe it," Luoer told him.
"I really don’t know..." Bartender answered in a whimpering voice.
"Buddy, when you say things like that, the brother behind me is not going to be happy," Luoer said, lowering his head and swishing around in a wooden cup the leftover cider from the sailors.
"Don’t be messing with me!" Getting a hinted understanding from Luoer, Hu Daoke stepped forward, set his submachine gun on the bar, and aimed the dark muzzle directly at the bartender.
"I know, I know... I’ll tell you everything you want to know..." The bartender raised his hands, almost collapsed from fear, and spoke tremblingly from behind the bar.
"Whose property is this pub?" Seeing the bartender cooperate, Luoer instantly asked.
He enjoyed this method of intimidation, because he could obtain the information he wanted without firing a single bullet. If everyone in this world can be so understanding, then he wouldn’t need to carry so many powerful weapons.
"The pub, pub..." the bartender was stuttering, but after being stared by Hu Daoke, he immediately corrected himself, "This, this property belongs to the Hound Gang..."
"When the Hound Gang was destroyed, didn’t the Booze Ghost Gang take over most of their properties? How could they have missed this place?" Luoer asked.
"When our boss heard that Big Boss Azita was back, he secretly made contact with him. This place is nominally a property of the Hound Gang, but in reality, it’s always been an undercover base of the Hound Gang..." the bartender explained.
