Chapter 794: Chapter 787: Showdown
"If they’re controlling the ports, why don’t we leave by land and board a ship downstream? That way, we can avoid their view, right?" said Eve.
Luoer quietly looked at her, not refuting, but waiting for her next question.
"Did I say something wrong?" Noticing the peculiar look in Luoer’s eyes, Eve cautiously asked.
"Your idea is theoretically feasible, but I hope you could also consider the actual situation," Luoer replied.
"What’s the actual situation?" Eve asked.
"The actual situation is," Luoer took a deep breath and spoke, "If only the Booze Ghost Gang was after you, there would be a thousand ways to escape. They can’t possibly stop you every single time. But obviously, your enemies are not only the Booze Ghost Gang. The force behind them is far more formidable than you can imagine."
"The force behind them?" Eve murmured, frowning.
"Let me put it this way," Luoer paused and continued, "If you go by land, there’s a good chance you’ll be stopped by guards, which would be like walking into a trap."
"Why would they do that? Why would the guards stop us," Eve queried, puzzled. She quickly grasped the connection, "You mean, those people have connections with the aristocrats and officials?"
"You can take your assumptions a step further," Luoer said calmly.
"Go a step further?" Eve didn’t quite understand Luoer’s point and fell into deep thought.
Seeing her confused expression, Luoer shook his head and clarified, "Let me be straight with you. These people aren’t exactly a benevolent bunch. Right now, the entire power structure of Odelanqi is their friend, from the king to the officials."
"How can this be..." Eve stared at Luoer wide-eyed and speechless at his revelation.
Although she had seen a lot during her time in Holy Heart City, she had never had contact with such high-ranking individuals. She had always perceived the king to be the highest authority. Yet now, she learned that her pursuers were friends with the king, filling her with a sense of despair.
"Who exactly are they?" After a long silence, Eve finally regained her composure and asked, biting her lip and looking at Luoer.
"Earthlings, or, as you would describe, Otherworlders," replied Luoer, shrugging nonchalantly.
"As we would describe... Are you saying, you’re also..." Eve asked, holding Luoer’s gaze with hesitation.
"Indeed," Luoer nodded in affirmation, "We are Earthlings, or as you would say, Otherworlders."
Eve stared at Luoer, taken aback. She had found something off about Luoer from the beginning, but didn’t think much of it. But now that he’d pointed it out, she quickly made the connection.
Yes, this man before her was certainly unlike any half-elf she had ever met. What was different, she’d had trouble pinpointing until Luoer revealed his origins.
Confidence, that was it, his confident demeanor unsettled her. She hadn’t met a single half-elf, especially a wood elf hybrid, who displayed such self-assurance in all her years in the north.
In the north, half-elves were perennially marginalized and discriminated against for a multitude of reasons. Those of night elf descent could pass somewhat while wood elves and snow elf hybrids essentially occupied the lowest rung of the hierarchy.
Each half-elf oppressed for so long exhibited extreme traits, they were either excessively vicious or timid. No one possessed Luoer’s balance of humility and assertiveness along with a keen intellect.
On this note, Cheng Ziang had previously advised Luoer that blending in with the lower class was not about dressing up, but about concealing his true aura.
Luoer, raised in Haiya Academy, grandson of the dean, a rare elf hybrid and admired by the Earthlings for his charm, had always led an esteemed life there, seldom facing prejudice or exclusion.
This life experience made his character starkly contrasting to the elf hybrids of the Otherworld. It was apparent to anyone acquainted with Otherworld elf hybrids that Luoer was different.
People once commented on Luoer, saying that despite being a half-elf, he didn’t have the temperament typical of half-elves in the Otherworld. Instead, he was more like a prince, exuding confidence and composure.
Eve was slightly agape but didn’t know what to say. She just stared blankly at Luoer. From the moment she first met Luoer, she had sensed an unusual aura about him. However, as he hadn’t revealed his true identity at the time, she hadn’t paid it much heed.
Now that Luoer had disclosed his identity, the peculiarities about him became increasingly evident to her. She had always felt Luoer was no ordinary person, but she had never imagined that Luoer was actually an Earthling.
"Are those people, those, Earth... Earthlings your enemies as well?" After a long silence, Eve stuttered her question.
"Yes," Luoer nodded.
"Then why aren’t you afraid of them?" Eve continued asking.
"Why, you ask," Luoer shrugged and confidently stated, "Because we are equals, they are friends with the kingdom, but we are also friends with the Pope himself, so we are not too afraid of them."
"You belong to the Church Court?" Hearing Luoer’s words, fear flashed in Eve’s eyes and she instinctively took a step back.
However, as the words left her mouth, she felt a bit off. If she recalled correctly, the Church Court was known to discriminate against half-elves, even more so than the commoners. Hence, Luoer couldn’t possibly belong to the Church. She couldn’t possibly imagine how the Church would allow a half-elf to be part of them.
Besides, apart from Luoer, there was that huge simpleton, a mixed blood of the Beastman race, which along with the half-elves was at the bottom of the discrimination chain. Therefore, unless the Church was out of their minds, they would never allow the two of them to join.
"We are not from the Church, or to be more specific, we are friends with the Church Court," Luoer coolly responded.
"Friends?" Eve furrowed her brows as she looked at him.
"Exactly, friends," Luoer shrugged and said.
Eve looked at him, holding back something she wanted to say. As if guessing what was on her mind, Luoer smiled and spoke, "I know what you want to say, but we indeed have connections with the Church. If you wish to leave here safely and head to Snow Domain, you should rely on us."
"Can you defeat the enemies in Holy Heart City?" Eve asked, her face full of skepticism.
"Of course, there’s no problem," Luoer replied confidently, "Don’t forget we also have the Church as our partner."
"What do I need to provide?" Eve asked while looking at him.
"If your information is accurate, that is, if the ’Ancient Scripture’ indeed contains the method to open the Otherworld Gate, then we want to acquire this Holy Book. That’s the condition," Luoer stated.
"I promise you, if you can escort us safely out and bring Jora home, then I will lead you to the ’Ancient Scripture’!" Eve affirmed earnestly.
"Excellent, I trust your promise." Luoer nodded in satisfaction.
"By the way, I don’t think I know your name yet." After a pause, Eve looked at Luoer and said.
"Hmm, didn’t that girl tell you my name?" Luoer was taken aback, then turned his head to look at Feng.
"She can talk?" Eve appeared even more surprised.
"That’s a bit offensive to her," Luoer helplessly shook his head, then seriously said, "My name is Luoer, the captain of the Otherworld Advance Team. That big fellow is Hu Daoke, and that girl wielding a knife is Feng."
"Your names, they sound...strange..." Eve hesitated.
Because they were transliterated directly, the names of Hu Daoke and the others always sounded strange, unable to bring out the original tonality of Chinese characters. Conversely, Luoer’s name was much more normal. This was unsurprising since his name was given to him by his Elf Race mother.
