Chapter 600: Chapter 593: Safe All the Way
"If you ignore me then..." Fulajie’er stopped mid-air, whirled, and said with her hands on her hips.
"Understood, understood." Luo’er replied with a helpless shake of his head.
"Hmph, switching to reconnaissance mode!" Fulajie’er huffed and then vanished from thin air.
This area is a plain, so the terrain is not too steep. Being a forest, the only way forward is to spread out in a line and advance. According to Marlori’s information, there has been a high frequency of corpse demons in this area, the primary source of which is a small village about fifty kilometers away.
The villages in the Otherworld are no longer villages in the literal sense. With the influx of food from Earth, the population of the Otherworld has skyrocketed in the past three decades. The village has long exceeded its classification, but administrative adjustments haven’t been made yet.
So, although nominally a village, it’s more like a small town, with a population exceeding ten thousand. Located fifty kilometers away on the plain, it is surrounded by large agricultural cultivation areas. A month ago, an epidemic spread throughout the village, and fewer than a thousand people escaped. The vast majority were executed by the Church Court on suspicions of carrying the virus.
The reason why the Judgement Legion is advancing towards the village from the forest fifty kilometers away is mainly because the corpse demons hang around the forest. If they were active on the plain, it would be easy for other legions of the Church Court to exterminate them. After all, these people are all armed with rifles that are specifically used to kill corpse demons. However, when it comes to fighting exotic beasts, they still prefer cold weapons.
The forested areas on the plains are generally not large since the Otherworld’s farmers need to clear more land for farming to support the population, which has long surpassed the carrying capacity of the environment. Hence, there’s no option but to clear more forests for agriculture.
Luo’er holds his gun, muzzle down, with his left arm clenched beneath his ribs—a posture that conserves energy and allows for a quick draw. This is a position that almost every trained soldier would know.
It is summer now. Although this area has a temperate continental climate, the weather is starting to get hot. Shortly after the fully armed advance team started out, they began to feel hot and break out in sweat.
Luo’er heaved a long sigh, feeling the heat of his own breath, as if burning his hands. He wanted to wipe the sweat off his forehead, but the gas mask blocked him.
He turned his head and glanced at Cheng Ziang nearby. Ziang rolled his eyes, showing that he was also feeling uncomfortable. Looking at the fully armed soldiers of the Judgement Legion, they were all panting heavily and the heat made their faces red.
Just as Luo’er was contemplating removing his gas mask, suddenly gunshots rang out in the woods. Startled, he quickly raised his gun and pointed it towards the source of the sound.
"What’s going on, did we find a corpse demon? Why didn’t Fulajie’er come back to warn?" Luo’er thought with confusion, glancing down at his pendant. But since it was pressed against his chest, he couldn’t see it.
After a while, Cheng Ziang, who was in the direction of the gunshots, let out a breath of relief and waved at Luo’er.
"What happened?" Luo’er asked.
"Misfire. Typical newbie mistake!" Cheng Ziang shook his head and grumbled.
As soon as Luo’er let out a sigh of relief, Fulajie’er’s voice came over: "Ah, Luo’er, someone just fired a gun indiscriminately over there!"
"I already know that..." Luo’er replied with a bitter smile.
"And you still sent me to scout!" Fulajie’er complained.
"You, you move faster, check what’s going on, and report back immediately." Luo’er coughed and replied.
"Then I have to check out what’s going on, or else I would bring back fake intelligence, right?" Fulajie’er responded.
"Okay, it’s my fault. You continue on, alright?" Luo’er said helplessly.
"That sounds more like it." Fulajie’er huffed and her voice disappeared again.
The group spent half a day searching, from morning till afternoon, with plenty of six hours in the jungle, and finally made their way out of the first forest in the afternoon. They immediately set up tents on the plains, preparing to rest for the night.
Luo’er estimated that they had only advanced ten kilometers in six hours. At this rate, it would take them several days to reach the village.
But that’s the Judgement Legion’s mission, to ensure the eradication of all epidemic threats in a forest through long-term search. The forests searched by them could be liberated from the epidemic area.
As soon as they had set up the tents, the subsequent logistics forces followed. With the Judgement Legion scouting ahead, the pace of the personnel behind them accelerated a lot, so they didn’t even need to go through the forest but could completely bypass it from the edge.
Soon, the camp became lively. In addition to the Church Court personnel, there were also farmers who were conscripted as labor. Luo’er always felt that among the many armies in Otherworld, the Church Court’s army had the most perfect logistics support.
When they followed the Judgement Legion on their expedition to the south, these knights hardly ever ran out of food before the attack, and their followers were even several times the number of knights.
These logistics people threw all kinds of ingredients into the pot, boiled it into a stew, and then used a large amount of spices to suppress the strange taste of the ingredients. It tasted quite good when drunk.
As special guests, the conditions for the two Advance Teams were much better than those for ordinary soldiers. Apart from the subtly flavored stew with soft bread, they could also eat freshly roasted lamb, without any marinating, chopped into pieces and roasted, and sprinkled with cumin and salt when cooked. Although the flavor was a bit strange, there was a unique taste to it.
Luo’er didn’t dare to drink much stew with bread, as Hu Daoke, who had finished a bowl, described, this thick soup was appetizing when hungry, but made him want to vomit when full, and he couldn’t even eat fresh roasted lamb.
So the group could only eat lamb, but Carter was generous enough to give them a whole roast lamb, and the ten fierce people tore it up and quickly ate the small lamb to the bone.
After they had eaten, they sat around the fire and rested, but Hu Daoke couldn’t stop scratching his back. Luo’er saw him scratching and asked concernedly, "What’s wrong?"
"I think I’ve got a rash, it’s this damn clothes that suffocating me all day." The more Hu Daoke scratched, the more addicted he became, and the faster he scratched. Seeing him uncomfortable, the others also started to itch inexplicably.
"Luo’er, I want to take a bath, I feel sticky." Tangmo came over to Luo’er and sniffed herself, then disgustedly stuck out her tongue.
"There’s no way to do that now." Luo’er said with a difficult expression.
"I saw a lake not far from here, isn’t it okay to draw some water and boil it for a bath?" Tangmo said.
"This is a contaminated area, who knows if the lake’s water is safe or not, if it has viruses. The water we’re using now is brought in from outside, and the first thing is to solve the drinking water problem, so you have to overcome it first." Luo’er advised.
"Ah, I’m so uncomfortable!" Tangmo complained, but she wrapped her arms around Luo’er’s arm mischievously and nestled against him.
"You don’t smell bad." Luo’er sniffed her hair, there was only a slight sourness of sweat, and no particularly foul smell.
"You smell this." Tangmo said, and pulled open her collar to let him smell it.
"I won’t smell there, you quickly put it back." Luo’er waved his hand in rejection.
"Ah, it’s so itchy!!!" Hu Daoke’s scratching became more intense, and almost everyone could hear his scratching sound.
"Be careful, don’t pass it on to me." Cheng Ziang moved a bit to the side, saying with a disgusted look.
"Come off it, as if you’re not itchy. I just saw you scratching your butt just now!" Hu Daoke rolled his eyes and retorted.
