Chapter 599: Chapter 592: Long-line Search Array
On the transport plane, Hu Daoke took off his antidote mask and took a deep breath. Seeing this, Luo’er quickly advised, "Quickly put it on, don’t be so reckless."
"Don’t worry, boss, we’re in the air. The virus probably can’t reach us here." Hu Daoke waved his hand dismissively.
Following his lead, the others also began removing their rewind masks, breathing deeply. Seeing this, Luo’er resignedly removed his mask as well.
The transport plane no longer used propeller propulsion, so the noise was greatly reduced, leaving them listening only to the whistle of the wind outside the cabin, no longer hearing the deafening roar of the propeller.
"Who designed these rewind masks? I almost suffocated." Wu Tairan removed his mask, unable to hold back a complaint.
"Pay attention. If we encounter Exotic Beasts, do not use point shooting; switch the safety to fully automatic mode and suppress them with firepower," Luo’er turned to Murong and his men, warning them with a serious expression.
As they needed to fight against Exotic Beasts and Corpse Demons, the Advance Team no longer distinguished positions such as Special Snipers. Everyone was equipped with automatic rifles, ensuring that their firepower advantage could be used in jungle combat.
This was an adjustment Luo’er and the others had made after combatting Exotic Beasts and reporting to headquarters. Facing agile Exotic Beasts with the slim firepower of semi-automatic rifles seemed hopeless. And these creatures were not easily dropped with a single shot.
Although their mission was to cooperate with the Purification Legion to wage war on Corpse Demons, no one could guarantee that they wouldn’t encounter Exotic Beasts. After all, the Corpse Demon virus came from Exotic Beast infection; it wouldn’t be a strange thing for Exotic Beasts to appear where Corpse Demons lurk.
"Got it," answered Murong, before he couldn’t help but ask, "Have you guys fought against Corpse Demons before?"
"No," Luo’er shook his head, but then thought of something and told them, "But, I did hear about the Church Court’s armies fighting against Corpse Demons."
"Hearsay again..." Zhuanzhu beside Murong muttered under his breath.
Murong kicked him lightly and then looked at Luo’er, asking curiously, "And what did they say?"
"Fighting against Corpse Demons differs from fighting against Exotic Beasts. The primary way the virus in Exotic Beasts is transmitted is through blood, and their blood is mostly viscous, not easily splattering. As long as one makes sure not to directly contact their blood, they can ensure safety. After pausing, Luo’er continued, "Battling against Corpse Demons, you have to be a hundred times more vigilant. It seems that their virus is transmitted through the air. So never, under any circumstances, engage them in close combat. It’s best to take them down before they get too close."
"Shouldn’t the virus in the Exotic Beasts and the Corpse Demons be related?" Upon hearing his words, Murong couldn’t help but frown and asked.
"They are the same, but I guess there might have been a mutation. The Exotic Beasts may transmit the virus to humans through blood or body fluids, and the virus may then mutate inside a human body, transforming it into a form that can be transmitted through the air," explained Luo’er.
"Interesting..." Murong mumbled, nodding.
"Also, it seems that Corpse Demons have something like a mushroom-shaped tumour growing on their heads; try not to shoot it. It could very well be where the Corpse Demons store the virus," Luo’er thought for a moment before continuing.
"A mushroom growing on their heads?" Murong asked with a furrowed brow.
"Yes, according to eyewitness descriptions, it does indeed have a mushroom shape. The Church Court’s armies were infected by the viruses spread by these Corpse Demons when they were attacked. The majority turned into Corpse Demons themselves, and were ultimately incinerated en masse", said Luo’er, his face serious.
As the two chatted, suddenly the co-pilot, a dwarf named High-peak, turned his head and said with somewhat imperfect Tasta, "We will reach our destination soon. Please prepare for landing."
Luo’er nodded, then turned back to the others and formally said, "We are about to reach our destination. Everyone, check your weaponry and gear, put on your antidote masks, and prepare for landing!"
Hearing his words, everyone busied themselves. Strangely, although Luo’er’s First Vanguard Team and Murong’s Second Vanguard Team were supposedly on the same level, Luo’er typically ended up leading the command. Strangely, none of Murong’s team found this out of place.
After they were geared up and the transport plane had steadied, they disembarked onto the ground which was a clear space at the edge of a forest, where the entire Purification Legion had already assembled in neat formations, waiting for orders to be given.
Seeing Luo’er and his crew disembark, a fully armed Carter approached them. Unlike other soldiers, he was dressed in Rune light armor with a family emblem and a long sword at his waist. Yet his helmet was that of the Purification legion, primarily to accommodate the remake mask he was wearing.
"Welcome, Captain Luo’er," Carter walked over and said.
"Are we all set?" Luo’er asked after looking around at everyone.
"Yes, we can set off at any moment," Carter replied with a nod.
"Are the logistics prepared?" Luo’er inquired.
"Everything’s ready! We’ve summoned clergy and farmers from the Church Court nearby to handle our logistics," came the answer.
The Church Court’s clergy primarily consists of priests and nuns. After brief training, they could act as temporary medical staff and set up field hospitals, while the farmers were responsible for transporting supplies and hauling the heavy baggage.
While the Purification Legion is a modern army of the Church Court, it nevertheless maintained many traditional practices. For example, aside from the armor and weapons provided by Earth, nearly every soldier was equipped with a longsword for self-defense.
Luo’er and others found this puzzling and somewhat ridiculous. Simple bayonets could resolve these issues, so why issue a longsword specifically? Regardless, they didn’t mind, considering the longswords were provided by the Church Court rather than headquarters.
"Good, let’s get moving," Luo’er nodded and said.
"I’ll allocate a battalion to ensure your safety," Carter said as he started to issue orders.
"No need, we’re heading directly to the frontline. Just focus on your own tasks," Luo’er dismissed with a wave of his hand.
"But, isn’t that... a bit..." Carter started, clearly worried.
"Don’t worry, we have far more combat experience than these recruits," Luo’er casually replied.
"Then, I insist that both you, Captain Luo’er, and Captain Murong each take a squad for your protection. That’s the least I can ask of you," Carter persistently suggested after a moment’s hesitation.
"Alright, then we accept your kind offer," Luo’er nodded in agreement.
Under Carter’s arrangement, two squads, each consisting of ten members from the Purification Legion, were assigned to the Advance Team. Although Luo’er initially claimed they didn’t need help, having twenty extra people definitely made the mission feel lighter.
"Murong, each of us will lead a squad. We’ll form a line and maintain a 100-meter distance from each other as we advance," Luo’er said to Murong.
"Understood. We’ll take the right side!" Murong nodded, then led the Advance Team and their assigned Purification squad away.
"Everyone form a line, maintain a long-line search formation and advance!" Luo’er ordered loudly.
At his command, everyone expanded their formation, keeping a few meters apart from each other as they moved towards the fear-filled unknown forest.
Strictly speaking, the Advance Team didn’t need to fight alongside the Purification Legion. However, Luo’er hoped to gain firsthand data, so he decided to lead the attack himself. They needed to confront the Corpse Demons directly to accumulate invaluable combat experience and avoid being at a loss when encountering them in the future.
"Fulajie’er, are you there?" Luo’er began to call after setting up the formation.
"Humph, so you finally want to talk to me," Fulajie’er suddenly appeared out of thin air, huffing as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"Stop complaining and start scouting," said Luo’er with a bitter smile.
"Did you only call me to do a task?" Fulajie’er pouted her lips even more.
"Alright, we can talk about whatever it is later, let’s focus on the mission at hand," Luo’er said with shake of his head, exasperated. He often wished Fulajie’er was a real artificial intelligence to avoid temper tantrums during missions.
