Chapter 535 - 528
Chapter 535: 528
"Understood, Chief!" The mercenary nodded, immediately leaving two people to watch over the entrance, while the remaining crew slowly positioned themselves at the doorway of the room and the corridor.
"They’re approaching, three individuals, armed, and they’re heading our way," Luo’er voiced as he hid beside the door, with Fulajie’er floating nearby, eyeing the enemies approaching through the corridor.
"Received. Three individuals, armed." Luo’er nodded, subsequently putting down his rifle and retrieving his handgun equipped with a silencer.
Unlike a rifle, a silenced handgun loaded with subsonic bullets was the real deal. A silenced rifle could only suppress the sound as much as possible and alter the characteristic ’pop’ of the gunshot. The handgun, however, reduced the noise to a negligible level. Of course, this also had to do with Earth’s advanced military technology.
"Fulajie’er, distract them!" Luo’er, holding his pistol, ordered Fulajie’er.
"I understand!" Fulajie’er responded and then floated towards the approaching trio.
"Damn it, the ghost is whispering in my ear again. Some unlucky bastard is about to face some bad luck!" exclaimed Theron, who was trailing behind. He angrily raises his hands to his ears, causing his two companions ahead to simultaneously turn around to look at him.
Luo’er seized this opportunity, poking his head out from his hiding spot, raising his handgun and firing multiple times until his magazine was empty.
Although he used subsonic bullets, their effectiveness was still impressively devastating. These guys lacked the runic armor of the Northerners or the bulletproof vests of Earthlings, making them as vulnerable as if they were naked before the force of the handgun rounds.
Furthermore, Luo’er specifically aimed for their upper bodies. The two ahead were instantly hit in the back of the neck and in the chest, falling to the floor with a whimper. Theron, who was being distracted by Fulajie’er, tried to resist but was too disturbed by her to counter, and Luo’er fired a bullet into his face. The bullet instantly shattered his brain and exited out the back of his neck, and he collapsed onto the ground, his eyes wide open.
"Safe!" Fulajie’er floated back, finally managing to use the right term after much struggle.
"Received, squad, continue to advance. Fulajie’er, continue your recon!" Luo’er nodded, replaced the bullets in his handgun, and continued to push forward with it in hand.
"Uh-huh," Fulajie’er answered, floating ahead of the group.
Luo’er and his band of five slowly moved ahead along the wall. Despite having Ghost bear the responsibility of scouting ahead, they still needed to be extremely cautious. After all, Ghost had been a human, not a true artificial intelligence, and she didn’t have infrared scanning abilities, so they could only rely on her eyesight.
After turning a few corners in the corridor, they didn’t meet any more armed Theron. There were also very few researchers in sight. It was the middle of the night after all, and everyone else was either resting or busy, with no time to loiter in the corridors.
Dark magic crystal lamps perched on the corridor walls emitted a dim and cold light. The group continued to creep along the wall, their traces almost impossible to detect for those with poor eyesight.
A massive room lay at the core of the building, concealed deep in the darkest part of the corridor. The closer they got to this room, the more tremulous Fulajie’er’s voice became. This room was the place where Soul Ascension took place, and to get there, they first had to pass through an observation room.
Only a few researchers were inside the observation room, wearing masks and caps and dressed in light-colored robes, who were engaged in a discussion.
After confirming there no armed personnel around, Luo’er violently kicked open the door to the observation room and stormed in with his gun in hand, commanding coldly, "Everybody freeze, raise your hands!"
The researchers abruptly saw Luo’er and his crew breaking in and froze on the spot. On hearing his orders, most of the researchers obediently raised their hands, while one attempted to make a run towards the other door.
How could Luo’er possibly grant his wish? He immediately raised his gun and fired. The bullet hit him in the thigh, and the researcher immediately let out a hoarse cry. But his voice was abruptly cut off as Luo’er rushed forward, knocked him to the ground, and forcefully covered his mouth.
"Sew his mouth and tie him up!" Luo’er issued an order to the accompanying mercenaries. He then ripped off a piece of adhesive tape and roughly sealed the fallen researcher’s mouth, taking the opportunity to also bind his wounded leg with several layers of tape.
Nightingale did not join in. She seemed to have discovered something, frozen as she walked over to the observation window. The observation window was made of Earth’s bulletproof glass, impervious to their current level of weaponry.
Beneath the observation window were a bunch of strange instruments engraved with peculiar runes. Now and then, traces of light could be seen travelling along these runes, clearly carrying magical energy.
The machine seemed to be made from an unknown material that resembled marble. In its center was a device similar to an escape pod, with an open lid that apparently could be closed once someone lay inside.
At both ends of the device stood two massive magic crystals, each as thick as three people hugging each other. Their bright colors indicated they were brimming with magic power. Mounted on the back of the escape pod was a pale blue cylindrical structure emitting a faint cold light, connected to a myriad of glowing tubes.
However, what captured Nightingale’s attention was not the device but the researchers standing next to the escape pod. Among them was Kuya, her arch-nemesis who had caused her father’s death.
At that moment, Kuya was in conversation with his colleagues. He appeared much older than his portrait, coughing occasionally during the conversation and even having to catch his breath after talking for too long.
Leaving the clean-up to the mercenaries, Luo’er walked over to Nightingale to keep her from doing anything rash. Just as Nightingale was about to punch the observation window, Luo’er quickly restrained her.
"Bulletproof glass, we can’t break through," Luo’er said, holding her wrist and feeling the texture of the glass.
"Sister, don’t be impulsive!" Fulajie’er consoled her.
Observing the situation below, an idea occurred to him. He looked at his pocket watch and began the countdown. "Attack countdown, five, four, three, two, one ..."
As he finished the countdown, a deafening explosion echoed from afar. The magnitude of the sound even caused the entire building to tremble.
Kuya and the researchers were startled by the explosion and the vibrations. He lifted his head to see Nightingale and Luo’er behind the observation window. After a moment of stunned silence, he seemed to recognize Nightingale and gave them a smile. He then hurriedly ordered his colleagues to activate the device and lay down on the bed inside the pod-like escape mechanism.
"He wants to become a god!" Seeing this, Nightingale angrily pounded on the observation window and announced.
"We have no choice but to blow it up. You all, lead the people to the exit and guard the entrance!" Luo’er ordered the mercenaries, turning and shouting out his instructions.
Then, he took out the explosives, stuck them onto the observation window, and inserted the detonator. After everyone had evacuated, he promptly lit the fuse.
"Boom!" The explosion turned the observation room into a mess, and the bulletproof glass was shattered, falling to the ground in large chunks.
Luo’er picked up his rifle and was the first to jump from the observation room into the room containing the device. The distance was about the height of a floor, but it was essentially a piece of cake for him.
However, he was apparently a step too late, as the lid of the pod-like device had already closed. With the supply of magic energy from the magic crystals, the engraved runes on the device started to emit a dazzling light. At the center of the device, the pale blue cylindrical structure started to emit an unusual glow, its surrounding tubes lighting up. Inside the cylindrical structure, a sphere of blue light started to form.
