Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 475 - 468: Finishing Up
Chapter 475: Chapter 468: Finishing Up
"Dead, dead, they are dead!" Cheng Ziang retreated, his voice echoing alarm at the sight of the corpses.
The Bobulu man looked at him disdainfully, grumbled vulgarities under his breath, and directly went to strip the rune armor from the fallen machine gunner.
The design of their armor was somewhat similar to that of the northern ones, but it only covered the chest, offering virtually no protection for the limbs. Such armor might be effective against the Elf Race’s swords, but it was worthless against the Advance Team’s magic-breaking bullets. Nevertheless, the Bobulu man felt a sense of reassurance wearing it.
He put on the machine gunner’s armor, while Cheng Ziang scrambled to pick up the discarded Lewis light machine gun, exhibiting a pitiable expression. "Bro, bro, how do I use this thing?" he asked timidly.
"And you are supposed to be part of a hunting team?" Bobulu looked at him in disdain while adjusting the straps of the armor, which was a bit tight for his muscular frame.
"Of course, I know. Just like this, right?" Cheng Ziang expertly checked the ammunition disc, revealing the large end of the 7.7mm rimmed bullets. The gun was a modified version of British Lewis machine gun, hence the bullets used were of British origin.
Cheng Ziang’s light machine gun had been revised; the heat sink sleeve was removed, and a small grip was installed in the front. Disregarding any potential consequences, he pulled the trigger and aimed it directly at the Bobulu man.
Startled and angered by his action, the Bobulu man snapped, "What the hell are you doing? Don’t you know not to point a gun at your own people? Who the hell trained you?"
"I’m not one of you!" Cheng Ziang sneered, instantaneously pulling the trigger. The light machine gun roared, firing bullets that hit the Bobulu man’s chest armor. The rune armor of the hunting team could only handle weapons of the Elf Race, leaving it defenseless against a machine gun that generates hundreds of joules.
Sparks emanated from the Bobulu man’s rune armor as the bullets easily penetrated the rune defenses, ripped through the armor, and entered his body.
The Bobulu man fell backwards in a strange pose, instantly lying motionless on the ground. Cheng Ziang didn’t hesitate. He swung his gun towards the unprepared gunmen of the hunting team and rained bullets upon them.
His army-issued Lewis light machine gun had a limited magazine capacity of 33 rounds. Thanks to the slower rate of fire, Cheng Ziang managed to aim at the remaining men before exhausting the ammunition. Taken by surprise, they were mowed down like sheaves of wheat, their blood pooling around their lifeless bodies.
With casualties rapidly accumulating, panic ensued. Some, throwing caution to the wind, started running aimlessly, abandoning all their weapons. When one broke, others followed. The morale of the hunting team was shattered. With no fight left in them, the survivors fled, throwing their weapons away in fear.
Seizing the opportunity, Cheng Ziang drew a throwing knife from his waist, hitting one of the fleeing men in the neck. He fell to the ground clutching his neck without uttering a sound.
Then he drew a revolver from his back, firing incessantly at the skyrocketing figures. With one chamber of the revolver empty, two men fell. On the other side, Baiyue, no longer needing to move between cover, began to aim and fire at the escaping crowd. Several people were shot down and fell mid-flight.
From a distance, Hu Daoke’s machine gun began firing again, bullets chasing after their fleeing figures. The once confident hunting team, who hadn’t managed to capture a single elf, were left doubting their choices and fleeing bare-handed without ever seeing the faces of their attackers.
With the enemy in disarray, the battle became one-sided and as the Advance Team ceased fire, Nina sent the signal for the elves to pursue, ordering them to annihilate all the invaders.
With the intervention of the elf forces, the Advance Team was able to set down the burdens on their shoulders and emerge from their hiding spots.
This was a rather splendid ambush. As they were well-equipped, the Advance Team didn’t even need magic; the weapons in their hands were sufficient to easily dispose of the charging enemies.
Soon, the elf soldiers began cleaning up the battlefield, piling up the bodies and collecting their equipment and weapons.
"Ah, mass production at its finest!" Hu Daoke squatted down, picking up a rare 1888 Commission Rifle from the ground, skillfully removing the ammunition clip from the magazine.
"These guys are crazy for selling weapons." Cheng Ziang shook his head helplessly at the reckless arms dealing of Earthlings.
Due to restrictions on weapons exports, major arms companies on Earth started replicating old rifles. The more outdated the models, the fewer restrictions imposed, leading to an increasing number of companies reproducing weaponry from World War One or even earlier.
The 1888 Commission Rifle is already considered decent in the civilian market. During the Advance Team’s travels in the Otherworld, they even encountered single-shot rifles. They once saw a noble happily parading in front of them, holding his beloved gold-plated, engraved Martini rifle.
Because of the restrictions on weapons export, these companies’ weapons maintained their original calibers instead of standardizing them, leading to a myriad of long-abandoned calibers reappearing in the Otherworld arms market.
These weapons were incredibly antiquated for the Advance Team, and their firepower was excessive. However, for the elf army still using bows and arrows, these were considered advanced weaponry.
As the Church Court began to close off the Otherworld Gate, the arms trade has become harder to conduct. Unless you have connections like the headquarters, nothing can be brought in or out casually. Nations were still negotiating with the Church Court regarding the movement of goods. Some countries even said they would not hold grudges if the Church Court had killed their soldiers, as long as they were allowed to trade.
The effects of the Church Court’s closure were apparent. Although this hunting squad appeared well-armed, each soldier only had about a dozen backup rounds. Some didn’t even have any, relying entirely on the bullets in their rifles. This explained why they did not immediately retaliate when they were attacked by the Advance Team; they were reluctant to use up their limited ammunition.
After the team regrouped, Cheng Ziang briefly inspected the ammunition consumption of the Advance Team. They had utilized around one third of their total ammunition in this counterattack, an acceptable consumption. They could always replenish standard bullets from merchants, so they were not worried about running out of bullets.
After the battle, Nina continued to direct the elf troops to clean up the battlefield, surrounded by two girls chattering and laughing. They had become so accustomed to scenes of battle that they barely gave it a second glance.
The most surprised ones from this battle were the elf soldiers who had been on guard duty. They had never imagined that a battle could be fought this way, with just five people able to kill all the invaders without any injuries.
In previous battles, the elf soldiers often had to sacrifice five to ten of their own to injure one from a hunting squad. This gap was completely reversed by the Advance Team, who almost effortlessly wiped out the entire hunting squad.
Perhaps such results could be attributed to their familiarity with the weapons. But keep in mind, Nina is an elf and she had never used firearms in combat. Yet even she could fight without sustaining injuries, further demonstrating the superiority of Earth’s weapons.
Indeed, the fact that Earth had advanced ahead of the Otherworld, and had already trodden the path they are on now and the one they are about to embark on, has resulted in Earthlings handling situations effortlessly.
Jungle warfare has always been a challenge for Earth’s armies. The classic example being the Vietnam War where the Americans suffered greatly in the green jungle, serving as a lesson for other nations’ armies around the globe. From the failed attempts of their predecessors, others began to master the art of this type of combat.
