Otherworld Advance Team
Chapter 474 - 467: Temporary Stalemate

Chapter 474: Chapter 467: Temporary Stalemate

Some gunmen of the hunting team tried to fight back from behind their shelters, but their bolt action rifles proved too weak against the fully automatic firepower of the Advance Team. The time it took for them to fire a shot was enough for their opponents to return fire with twenty or thirty bullets, so the hunting team’s counterattack was swiftly suppressed.

Gunmen with semi-automatic rifles also attempted to retaliate, but they became the main targets of the snipers. At a distance of less than two hundred meters, Baiyue was almost unerring, effectively making the bolt action sniper rifles feel like semi-automatic rifles.

On the intense battlefield, it was difficult for the enemy to detect the snipers equipped with silencers, as various gunshots could completely cover the snipers’ gunfire. They could only judge the position of the snipers through their fallen comrades, but the current situation obviously did not allow them to make any judgments.

Overall, the hunting team lost due to its lack of vigilance. In the past, the enemies they faced were soldiers of the elf race who used primitive bows and arrows and lacked firearms. The Kedal metal used possesses strong armor-piercing capabilities, but it was ineffective against Rune Armor, allowing their firepower to be effectively utilized.

This time, however, the hunting team faced the Advance Team, whose firepower was several times greater. They were immediately stunned. In fact, if the hunting team had more than a hundred members, even with the advanced firepower of the Advance Team, they would be powerless to respond.

But the hunting team had only about thirty members. Although most of them were equipped with firearms, they were still inferior in the face of the powerful firepower of the Advance Team.

Cheng Ziang had the right mentality for the battle: to shock the enemy with swift and intense attacks, forcing them to abandon the idea of counterattack. This is a common tactic used by the Advance Team when dealing with feudal armies.

In ancient wars, morale was the most important factor. Once morale was shattered, even the strongest armies would disintegrate. Most soldier casualties in history did not occur during combat, but during the process of retreat. The disintegrating army, offering no resistance, can only be pursued and slaughtered by the victorious side at will.

The Advance Team each used one magazine of shield-breaking bullets, which instantly shattered the shield system formed by the mages. In terms of effect, though shield-breaking bullets could break through shields and cast minor spells, the damage inflicted after piercing the shield was quite limited due to the limited output of the magic crystals inside the bullet.

Despite this, such bullets played a huge role in the battle, as their main purpose was to force the mages to stop channeling spells.

As mentioned earlier, for mages to continuously use magic, they need to keep reciting spells to channel magical power. Once a spell is stopped, the magic also stops. Although the destructive power of shield-breaking bullets is limited, they can interfere with a mage’s channeling.

In terms of effect, the damage caused by shield-breaking bullets to the human body is far greater than the penetration of a shield. After entering the human body, a bullet will deform due to resistance. This deformation will trigger the runes inside the bullet, causing small-scale magic within the body and directly damaging the enemy from the inside.

Under a hail of gunfire, over half of the hunting team was lost, and most of the survivors were injured, scrambling to hide behind any cover they could find. Despite their constant battles with the elves, the hunting team understood basic warfare techniques, such as finding cover.

The buildings in the elf village were mostly made of stone mixed with mud and poured into molds, often over ten centimeters thick. Bullets would easily ricochet when fired at the stone walls, making it impossible to penetrate the cover. The hunting team relied on these reinforcements to just about hold their ground.

But whilst they held their ground, the hunting team had also lost their basic ability to counterattack. Snipers heavily targeted their machine gunners and semi-automatic rifle users, reducing the hunting team’s firepower by more than half. Those left with bolt-action rifles posed no threat to the Advance Team, who could return fire seven or eight times faster.

In World War II, armies with automatic weapons often held the upper hand. Two soldiers with automatic rifles could suppress an enemy squad equipped with bolt-action rifles. On Otherworld, this was the case too, but even worse.

If it were not for the ambush, the hunting team could have given the Advance Team a fight with their weapons at hand, possibly even suppressing them. However, because it was an ambush, the Advance Team had the upper hand, knocking out most of the machine gunners and mages in one attack, completely extinguishing any hopes of counterattack from the hunting team.

After the hunting team hid, the gunfire in the village gradually sparse. Only Hu Daoke occasionally made short bursts to suppress any attempts of counterattack by the opposition. The rest of the team, unable to see anyone, conducted general random shots, hoping their bullets would pass through the walls and kill enemies hiding behind.

At this point, Baiyue had also begun to shift her position. As the battle entered a stalemate, her position would soon be exposed. Once exposed in such a position, she would easily become the focus of the hunting team’s fire attacks.

Although they were in a temporary stalemate, the Advance Team was not particularly worried. This was Ilanadale, the domain of the Wood Elves. They could afford to drag the battle, and the Elf soldiers were ambushed in the jungle. These people would be trapped unless they retreated the way they had come.

As the battle entered a stalemate, the Advance Team adjusted on its own accord. Tangmo went to Hu Daoke’s side with his gun to assist in suppressing the opposition. This gave Hu Daoke the opportunity to reload, allowing a brief rest for the machine gun, to prevent overheating.

Nina’s first combat performance was not impressive. She fired almost three magazines and barely killed two men. However, for her, this was already an achievement. Although she had experienced the Otherworld War it was thirty years ago, and they were the ones being attacked by the Earthlings, she had no experience in firearms combat.

Nina was currently communicating with the leader of the Elf troops, asking them to stay alert to the sides to prevent the enemy from escaping through the flanks of the village.

In the past, the Elf troops often found themselves at a disadvantage against the hunting team, but now the hunting team was directly suppressed by the Advance Team. Although the hunting team had guns, once they started fleeing, they lost their fighting spirit and were easily killed by the Elf soldiers wielding inferior weapons.

Cheng Ziang stopped opening fire and thoughtfully signaled Hu Daoke that he was preparing to charge. Once he got Hu Daoke’s approval, he put his rifle down, unbuckled his belt, and prepared to kill these people at close range using cold weapons.

He surged forward to the former battleground using Hu Daoke’s suppressing fire as cover, dragging a corpse from the battlefield, and putting on its clothes. He smeared the blood from the corpse’s wound over himself and his face.

After that, he gestured to Hu Daoke, and upon receiving affirmation, he scrambled towards the hunting team’s cover. Hu Daoke’s bullets flew over his head with a whizzing sound, hitting the dirt nearby with a terrifying crackling sound.

"Save me, save me!" Cheng Ziang screamed in desperation, rolling into the hunting team’s cover with Hu Daoke’s bullets following him, crackling near his heels.

He rolled into the cover and the hunting team, without hesitation, pulled him in. They were still unclear who was attacking them, thinking it was the Elf soldiers, and instinctively considered Cheng Ziang, who looked like a man of Aud, as one of their own.

"Did you see who was attacking us?" A bearded Bobulu man asked him with widened eyes.

"I didn’t see, they are terrifying!" Cheng Ziang exclaimed, showing a terrified expression.

"In the name of the Goddess of Light, let me take care of that gunman!" An Aud-looking machine gunner, holding a Lewis light machine gun, prayed before preparing to lean out to counter Hu Daoke.

But as soon as he leaned out, it felt as if his head was hit hard by something, and he collapsed weakly onto the ground, blood pooling around him. Only then did the others realize that his head had unexpectedly been shot.

It was Baiyue’s doing. She continuously changed her position, taking turns with Cheng Ziang to snipe down the enemies hiding behind the cover. Fearing retaliation, she would change her location after every shot.
