Chapter 449: Chapter 442: First Meeting
The woman with the gun maintained a distance of more than three meters from the nearest person, a distance sufficient to ensure no one dared approach to seize her weapon. It was clear that this was no accident, she intended it to be this way.
Cheng Ziang concluded that she knew how to handle a gun solely based on her handling details.
The woman had the butt of the gun tight against her cheek, her eyes wide open, her left eye slightly narrowed, and through the sights, she targeted them. This was a targeting technique known only to veterans — even rookies would keep one eye open and close the other to aim. Only people with specific training would keep both eyes open to aim.
Her body was leaning forward, her right leg positioned in front, and her left leg slightly bent to provide support, maintaining a standard shooting stance. Cheng Ziang also noticed that her trigger finger was the frontmost knuckle on the trigger - a technique that was difficult to master without specific training.
Because most people, when holding a gun for the first time, would use the second knuckle to pull the trigger, including when they first started learning to use a gun. This technique could lead to pulling the trigger too hard, causing an offset, affecting shooting accuracy. Without specific training, she wouldn’t know this technique.
Based on this, Cheng Ziang concluded that the woman in front of him knew how to use a gun and was likely an expert. Rash actions would likely lead to severe casualties.
"Wait, ma’am, is there some misunderstanding between us?" Cheng Ziang raised his hands and asked calmly.
"You’re not Theron, are you?" The woman stared at them and asked.
"This..." Hearing her words, Tangmo widened his eyes and looked at Cheng Ziang.
"How do you know?" Cheng Ziang asked calmly.
"Of course I know, you were speaking Chinese, right!" the woman said coldly.
"How do you know we were speaking Chinese!" Hearing her words, everyone was almost shocked. Tangmo couldn’t help but blurt out his question.
"Of course I know, I understood every word you just said!" the woman replied.
"You’ve learned Chinese?" Cheng Ziang’s heart skipped a beat, suddenly coming up with a bold conjecture.
The woman didn’t answer his question, but continued, "If you’re from Earth then why did you come to the Ancient States and pretend to be Theron?"
"This..." No one knew how to answer. They all watched Cheng Ziang eagerly.
"You’re not Theron either, ma’am. Why not return to Ilanadale?" Cheng Ziang retorted.
"That’s none of your business, I..." The woman started to speak, but suddenly stuttered.
"All of this, is for one person, or two?" Cheng Ziang asked, looking at her.
"What did you say?" asked the woman.
"Like, for instance, a man from Earth, a man who speaks Chinese?" Cheng Ziang asked casually.
"You know him?" Hearing his words, the woman stared at him, wide-eyed.
"He was a soldier from Earth. You met on the battlefield and later lived together. The reason you can handle a gun, the reason you understand Chinese is because he taught you," Cheng Ziang continued.
His words seemed to strike a chord in the woman. She started to cower a bit, the muzzle of the gun gradually lowered.
"Later you had a son together and lived peacefully as a family. But then the man fell ill and his disease would never improve as long as he was here. So, you sent him back to Earth with your son," Cheng Ziang continued.
"Wait, I’ve heard this story somewhere!" Tangmo said, his face revealing a sudden realization.
Hearing his words, the hostility in the woman faded. She lowered her rifle, trembling, and was on the brink of tears.
"You promised each other that once the man recovered, he would bring your son back to Ilanadale to find you. But this wait turned into over twenty years!" Cheng Ziang said.
"Stop talking, please stop..." The woman whimpered, slowly sinking to the ground. She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.
"Nice to meet you, Aunt Nina!" Cheng Ziang lowered his hands slightly, slightly bowed, and spoke respectfully.
"She’s Luo’er’s mother!" Tangmo exclaimed in surprise.
"Nuo’er, No...where is Luo’er?" Upon hearing Tangmo’s voice, the woman lifted her head and asked urgently.
"Luo’er is with us, Auntie. We’re friends of Luo’er and not your enemies. Can you please hand over the gun?" Cheng Ziang slowly walked over and said.
He waved his hand, Hu Daoke nodded and slowly walked up to Nina, picked up the rifle that fell to the ground, and promptly switched off the safety.
He instinctively took another look at Nina. Her appearance was simply stunning to Hu Daoke. Rather than saying she was Luo’er’s mother, she seemed more like Luo’er’s twin sister. Because she looked so young, if it weren’t for the mature aura in her eyes, Hu Daoke would probably have referred to her directly as a sister.
"She, she is Luo’er’s mother, that means..." Meeting his partner’s parents for the first time, Tangmo suddenly stuttered, awkwardly checking if anything was out of place on himself.
"Right, the clothes, the clothes!" Something occurred to him and he quickly ran over to his backpack, digging through it, and found his special outfit for meeting the parents. He hastily ran into another room in the building to change.
Baiyue did not let him have all the spotlight either, even beating Tangmo to the punch, hiding herself in the other room to change clothes.
"Wow, this..." Watching the frantic behavior of the girls, Hu Daoke was stunned.
"Forget it, I can’t be bothered dealing with them," Cheng Ziang said helplessly, shaking his head. Then, he walked over to Nina, asking with concern, "Aunt Nina, are you okay?"
"I’m fine," Nina shook her head before getting up from the floor. She looked at him and asked anxiously, "Where is Luo’er?"
"He was held up by something; he’ll be here shortly," replied Cheng Ziang.
"What about his father?" Nina asked urgently.
"That..." Cheng Ziang hesitated for a moment, exchanged glances with Hu Daoke, then said a bit guiltily, "As for his father...it’s best if you ask him directly. After all, it’s his family matter, and it’s not our place to interfere."
"I see..." Upon hearing this, Nina lowered her head, a bit dejected.
"Hey, how did you know that she is the boss’s mother?" Hu Daoke pulled Cheng Ziang aside and asked in a low voice.
"Don’t you think she looks a lot like Luo’er? They both have dark green eyes," Cheng Ziang replied indifferently.
"But it seems like most Wood Elves have that eye color," Hu Daoke said with some hesitation.
"I’ve been observing her actions closely and noticed many things that seemed off," Cheng Ziang said.
"What things?" Hu Daoke asked.
"She referred to us as Earthlings, a term used mainly by those who have had extended contact with people from Earth. For example, the Blaiqi people mostly call us Earthlings, not Otherworlders. Additionally, I’ve had the impression that she seems to understand Chinese. I’ve noticed her eavesdropping while you guys were communicating..." Cheng Ziang explained.
"Wow, you figured all that out?" Hu Daoke interrupted with surprise.
"What’s so difficult about that?" Cheng Ziang shrugged, "Plus, I observed she used alcohol to sterilize wounds. That’s a practice almost exclusively done by Earthlings. Considering the thousands of kilometers between the Ancient States and the Otherworld Gate, she couldn’t possibly know this method without reason. Last but not least, her handling of guns looked professional from any angle. It seems like someone taught her specifically, and even natives of the Ancient States may not know how to handle them like that."
"Well that’s weird. Didn’t the boss say his mother was waiting for him in Ilanadale? So why has Auntie ended up in a village within the territory of the Ancient States?" Hu Daoke asked sceptically.
"I also think it’s strange. We’ll have to ask Auntie about it." Cheng Ziang replied, shrugging.
With that, he walked up to Nina. As soon as she saw Cheng Ziang, Nina asked, "In what capacity are you here now?"
"Capacity, well...we’re soldiers," Cheng Ziang gave an honest reply. He didn’t think there was any reason to hide it from Nina.
"Soldiers, is Luo’er also one?" Nina asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"Of course," Cheng Ziang nodded.
"That’s nice. Luo’er’s father was also a soldier," Nina said, a sorrowful look crossing her face.
"Ah, actually, Luo’er’s grandfather was also a soldier..." Cheng Ziang said.
After a brief pause, he asked, "Auntie, may I ask you a few questions?"
"What do you want to ask?" Nina looked at him. Despite being tall, she still appeared petite next to Cheng Ziang.
"Luo’er said you’d wait for him in Ilanadale. So why didn’t you go to Ilanadale but came to the Ancient States instead?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Ah..." Nina let out a soft sigh upon hearing his question and then lowered her head to say, "What else could it be for? It was for my daughter."
"Daughter?" Cheng Ziang paused upon hearing the word, hesitating before finally asking, "Did you, remarry?"
"No, no, " Nina explained, "She is Luo’er’s real sister. Her name is Noah..."
"Noah?" Cheng Ziang repeated the name.
"It should actually be Luoya, the pronunciation in the Ancient States is wrong," Nina said.
"So...Luoya also follows her father’s surname?" Cheng Ziang remembered that although Luo’er took his father’s surname, it was Nina who named him.
"Yes, she’s Luo Chuan’s daughter..." Nina answered.
"Er, according to our tradition, she should be called Luoya," Cheng Ziang said after a moment’s thought.
"Luoya?" Nina repeated the name.
"Enough about that. Where is she now?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"She, she said she wanted to join Theron. I initially didn’t want her to go..." Nina shook her head as she spoke.
"Wait, Theron? You’re saying she joined Theron?" Cheng Ziang exclaimed, as if suddenly realizing something, and asked with widened eyes.
"Yes, what’s wrong?" Nina asked, looking at him.
"When did she leave?" Cheng Ziang asked anxiously.
