Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 431 - 424: Small Town Conflict
Chapter 431: Chapter 424: Small Town Conflict
However, such worries could feel somewhat like needless worries, as before the advance team set out, Wang Xu had repeatedly warned them not to meddle in the war between the Judgement Legion and Theron, instructing them to flee before any conflict between the two parties erupted.
Therefore, whether the Judgement Legion would be suppressed by Theron, how many people would die, had nothing to do with the advance team. They were merely passers-by following the Judgement Legion, touring and sightseeing with them and fleeing at the first sign of danger, without any responsibility involved.
This was not just retaliation for the Church Court’s inaction last time but also one of the headquarters’ vital considerations. When expansion to the south becomes necessary for the headquarters, their best collaborator would be Ancient States. There was simply no need to oppose them for the sake of the Church Court.
As for the Church Court, what do the conflicts between you and the Ancient States have to do with you both being my friends?
Regarding the so-called Creating God Plan, because the Judgement Legion members were unwilling to reveal more details, Tangmo was unable to judge whether the people of Ancient States could bring their plan to fruition, making the advance team’s course dependent on the circumstances. If the Judgement Legion managed to crush the Ancient States’ plan in one fell swoop, they would no longer need to concern themselves.
Following the plan, the team marched on and had crossed more than half of the territory of Saint Basaya in twenty-three days, about to enter the border between Saint Basaya and Baales.
The further south they went, the warmer the weather. Having crossed the only large Bavana River in Saint Basaya, they had already escaped the control of the northern cold current. The weather was still gloomy, but there were almost no traces of snowfall anymore.
If Luo’er’s memory served him correctly, the Bavana River was the midline of the Aels Continent. Although they referred to Odelanqi and Masya as the North, the real North was located after crossing the east-west stretching Northern Domain Mountain Range and the Winter Mountains. However, due to its cold climate, only Snow Elves and High-peak people resided there.
The distance from the Bavana River heading south to the City of Stars on the southern coast of the continent was just as far as heading north to the northernmost coast.
Passing the Bavana River, they had almost reached the area controlled by the Tropic of Cancer. This area was primarily a subtropical climate, though still cold, much better than the North.
With the end of the snowfall, some members of the advance team began to ride behind the wagons on horseback. Riding in the wagon long time felt uncomfortable; riding on horseback was more comfortable. The horses provided by the headquarters were from Masya; although not as large as those from Odelanqi, they were cold-resistant and able to carry heavy loads.
Throughout these twenty-plus days, the members of the Judgement Legion had indeed ignored them. They sent servants to deliver some food each day, with no interaction otherwise. It seemed that the three leaders had genuinely treated the advance team as if they were invisible.
This ignorable feeling was nice, but something strange still felt after a while. As if the advance team were invisible before them, the Judgement Legion disregarded their existence completely.
Before leaving, the Pope tasked the Judgement Legion to cooperate with people from the headquarters, allowing the headquarters staff to work with them in completing their task. The Pope hadn’t explicitly stated how to do this because cooperating with the headquarters was merely a reciprocal action meant for enhancing relationships. The Pope did not care what kind of role the people sent by headquarters could play in the operation.
After a day’s journey, the vast team finally arrived at a small town in Saint Basaya in the afternoon. Although the total population of the Otherworld continent had doubled in thirty years, it was still not particularly large. The small town where the Judgement Legion was staying was called small, but in fact, only had several hundred residents. More than five thousand people cramming into the town basically overwhelmed it. Most people had to live in tents.
Of course, those Knights prefer to commandeer the town’s houses for their rest, instead of staying in tents. The displaced townspeople had to admit their bad luck because they knew full well that the Judgement Legion’s men weren’t kind. Any slight resistance, and they would be instantly branded as heretics or apostates, then executed following a summary trial.
Although they didn’t particularly like the advance team, the Judgement Legion men still prepared a house for them to rest. Luo’er, however, didn’t accept their kind offer and pitched a tent outside the town instead.
Although aware of the Judgement Legion’s misdeeds, Luo’er didn’t want to muddy himself with their actions. While the advance team could hardly be considered angels, they were still incapable of such inconsiderate acts.
"These guys take lack of decency to a whole new level." Hu Daoke shook his head as he looked at the displaced townspeople in front of him.
This place wasn’t as cold as the North, but the temperature wasn’t much higher either. Considering the light rain falling from the sky, it was hard to fathom where these evicted people would have to stay for the night.
"These people are accustomed to being overbearing. If someone finally deals with them, they’ll probably behave," Cheng Ziang commented beside him.
While they voiced such thoughts, they were helpless in the face of the current situation. After all, in the eyes of the Judgement Legion, they were nearly air, let alone having any say in matters.
Two Bobulu girls leaned on each other, moving through the crowd, wiping their tear-streaked faces as they walked. One seemed slightly older, around seventeen or eighteen years old. The other was younger, looking barely fifteen or sixteen."
The pair were typical Bobulu. Their skin was slightly darker, somewhat akin to the brown race on Earth; their tough, worn skin was likely due to sun exposure. They wore simple Bobulu-style clothes and headscarfs.
Despite their rough circumstances, the girls were undeniably pretty. Their skin color and clothing did nothing to mar their beauty. Their long eyelashes and rosy lips caught the eye, compelling people to glance their way.
"Wow, they sure are beautiful. Should we take them in and let them stay in our wagon for the night?" Hu Daoke, eying the girls as they walked past, couldn’t help but ask with a grin.
"Just because you see some pitiful girls doesn’t mean you should take them in! How are you any different from Luo’er?" Cheng Ziang rebuked him.
"Um," Luo’er coughed, then said awkwardly, "Guys, could you not bring me up when you’re speaking?"
"Boss, they really are pitiful." Hu Daoke turned to him and said.
"I don’t want to meddle in things like this anymore, I’m tired of you guys teasing me about it. The world is full of suffering we can’t solve. There are hundreds here without a place to stay. We can’t just take them in because we find them pitiful, it wouldn’t be fair to the others." Luo’er shrugged, unable to help.
"Sigh..." Hearing Luo’er’s answer, Hu Daoke couldn’t help but sigh. While Luo’er was harsh, what he said was the truth.
Just as they were about to enter their tent, there was suddenly a commotion in the crowd. A group of armored knights rushed up. In front of everyone, they captured the two Bobulu girls. The girls screamed in terror.
"What the hell is going on, boss, something’s happening!" Hu Daoke turned to watch the scene, then hurriedly looked back, urging excitedly.
Upon hearing the commotion and Hu Daoke’s call, Luo’er crawled out from the tent. He saw a few knights aggressively holding the girls by their necks under the direction of a clergyman, completely disregarding their pleas for mercy. The clergyman stood to the side, holding a thick book, muttering prayers.
The spectators were either panic-stricken or furious, but none of them dared to intervene, letting the girls scream in helpless agony.
"What’s going on?" Luo’er furrowed his brows, turning his head and asking.
"I don’t know! These guys showed up out of nowhere. I have no idea what these girls did to deserve this!" Hu Daoke said anxiously.
Upon hearing his words, Luo’er sighed, then walked behind the clergyman, clearing his throat before asking, "Excuse me, sir, but may I ask what you’re doing here?"
The clergyman halted his prayer and turned, his face twisting in disgust when he saw Luo’er. "This is none of your business, you’d best not interfere!" he grumbled.
Facing the priest’s discrimination, Luo’er refused to back down, his face stern as he coolly retorted: "I would have you to show some respect. We are friends of the church. Apart from the Pope himself, few dare to point fingers at us."
"You..." The priest mumbled, his face turning sour. Noticing his expression, several knights immediately circled Luo’er, their intentions clear.
They were tall, all of them stood at least half a head taller than Luo’er. Yet even in the face of their looming forms, he didn’t shrink back. Instead, he grinned mockingly, "So, you’re thinking of laying hands on me? Even if you disregard your chances of beating us, just the charge of disrupting the cooperation between the Church and Headquarters, can you bear it?"
At the end of his words, the sound of guns being cocked echoed behind him. Baiyue was already on one knee on the roof of the wagon, a 74U short assault rifle in her hands aiming at them. Under the vehicle, Hu Daoke and Cheng Ziang each held a rifle, pointing them at the knights. Tangmo had walked up as well, his magic wand in his grip. He was expressionless but his intentions were clear. Any sign of aggression would be met with a hail of gunfire from the advance team.
Perhaps the Church cared about its cooperation with Headquarters, but the advance team did not. They knew that under such circumstances that cooperation was bound to be at a disadvantage. Even if they killed some Judgement Knights, they wouldn’t be held accountable.
