Chapter 430: Chapter 423: On the Road
"You are so liked, everyone likes you. Unlike Old Cheng and I, no one likes us, I guess we’re doomed to be old bachelors." Hu Daoke sighed.
"Speak for yourself, don’t bring me up, I just don’t want to think about such things." Cheng Ziang immediately distanced himself from him.
"When we entered the Otherworld, they kept highlighting that Otherworlders hate half-elves, but it seems the people we encountered are pretty easy-going, as for those girls... ah, it’s hard to tell..." Luo’er lamented.
"There is still discrimination, but you seem to be able to keep your cool. If it were me, I would have confronted those people already." Cheng Ziang said.
"Every action must take the grand scheme into account. Acting impulsively only temporarily vents your frustrations, without truly solving the problem. As people from earth, representatives of an advanced civilization, we have a responsibility to contribute to racial equality. I care not how they insult me, I just hope that they can drop their prejudices. If they are reluctant to do so, then I will make them reincarnate." Luo’er spoke lightly.
"Eh, you deviated off topic, chief, can we not change the subject!" Hu Daoke reminded.
"For someone who seems rude and unrefined, you’re quite the gossiper, aren’t you?" Luo’er turned his head to look at him, shaking his head as he spoke.
"Since the big brother is not married yet, how dare we get ahead!" Hu Daoke joked casually.
"There’s no such rule. Decide who you like on your own, don’t bring me into it." Luo’er said helplessly.
"Then, what about that young lady, what’s her name..." Hu Daoke asked, blinking his eyes.
"Feliz, right?" Luo’er added, "That girl has potential, so I think she could excel if she learns Earth’s culture."
"How did you guys meet?" Hu Daoke completely ignored what he said afterward, asking with a face full of gossip.
"When we first infiltrated the academy, she often liked to compete with Moumou. She thought I was a slave, so she wanted to take me away from Moumou. That’s how everyone got to know each other." Luo’er said.
"So, between the two of you..." Hu Daoke began.
"There’s nothing between us. We are just pure friends." Luo’er quickly interjected.
"Ah, I see, I see," Hu Daoke waived his hand as he asked, "How did you guys become friends then?"
"Feliz doesn’t discriminate against me being half-elf, but rather told me I shouldn’t be ashamed of my mother. She’s probably the first person in the Otherworld I’ve encountered with such a healthy world view, so I think she’s worth being friends with." Luo’er explained.
"So actually you two..." Hu Daoke asked.
"As I said, there’s nothing between us." Luo’er rolled his eyes and replied.
"What about the little servant girl?" Hu Daoke continued to ask.
"What little servant girl? She’s older than you." Luo’er gave him a glance and said.
"That’s not important, what do you think?" Hu Daoke asked.
"We are just friends, really just friends." Luo’er said.
"Wow, boss, how come most of your friends are female?" Hu Daoke scratched his head and asked, "No wonder Sister Moumou is so angry. If it were me, I would be angry too. You are such a worry!"
"What can I do? Most men discriminate against me." Luo’er shrugged in response.
"So boss, what do you think about Sister Moumou and Yue’er compared to other girls?" Hu Daoke asked.
"How do I put it, even though I have not explicitly mentioned liking either of them, but I feel there’s a bond with them that surpasses others. I will consider these questions after I find my mom. Isn’t accompaniment the longest confession of affection?" Luo’er sighed and said.
"So you like Sister Moumou or..." Hu Daoke began to ask, but suddenly Cheng Ziang reached across Luo’er and slapped him on the crown of his head, making him scream in pain.
"You’re cruising for a bruising, aren’t you!" To think he could still reach across Luo’er to hit him. Hu Daoke covered his head, gritting his teeth in anger.
"You’ve got a big mouth, don’t ask what you shouldn’t!" Cheng Ziang coldly said.
Luo’er glanced at him with a trace of gratitude, not reproaching him for his actions. If Luo’er were to choose right now, he would have no idea who to choose. For him, both Tangmo and Baiyue were equally important in his heart.
"Sleep, sleep, sleep!" Luo’er urged, and took the lead by burying his head in his sleeping bag, showing only his face.
At his indication, the two ceased their conversation and also climbed into their sleeping bags, drifting off to deep sleep after a short nap. In his drowsiness, Luo’er seemed to hear footfalls on packed snow coming from outside the tent. But he never gave it another thought, as they might be the retinues of the Judgement Legion.
When they got in the car the next day, the two girls, for some reason, had caught a cold and were huddling under blankets, shivering. Luo’er looked at them with a touch of pity and couldn’t help asking, "What were you guys up to last night? How did you catch a cold?"
Tangmo and Baiyue shared a glance, and Tangmo answered hesitantly, "We... we–our magic crystal for the runes ran out of magic power last night... we didn’t notice..."
"Really?" Luo’er was stunned and casually opened the car’s magic crystal storage box. Plenty of magic crystals were piled up inside, showing no signs of decrease.
"Next time, replace it with one of a higher concentration to avoid inadequate supply." Instead of probing further, Luo’er gave a reminder.
"Alright." Tangmo nodded, immediately sniffling.
Fortunately, they caught only colds and not viral flu. Otherwise, the three men would have to ride horses to avoid infection.
The advance team had been inoculated with dozens of vaccines for common diseases in Otherworld before their entry. But caution is still needed, because nobody can guarantee that they won’t encounter a virus that hasn’t been included in the vaccines. The antibodies of both the humans of Earth and the Subspecies are inadequate for the diseases in this Otherworld, and vaccines are their only solution.
"Luo’er, I’m cold!" Tangmo looked at him, begging pitifully.
"I know..." Even before Luo’er finished his sentence, Tangmo had already lifted his arm of her own initiative, and then leaned against him. Luo’er looked at her action and laughed helplessly.
Just as Tangmo settled in, Luo’er felt a movement on his other side. Baiyue was pulling her blanket with one hand and tugging Luo’er’s sleeve with the other, then staring at him with anticipation, her intention obvious.
Baiyue was not much of a talker, but she was more proactive than Tangmo. She didn’t even wait for Luo’er’s consent and crawled directly into his arms, feeling his body warmth.
"Oh man, I’m so envious, why isn’t there someone to hug me?" Hu Daoke, sitting across them, looked enviously at them and then turned his gaze to Cheng Ziang by his side.
"Gross, back off, don’t you dare!" Cheng Ziang, sensing danger, moved away from him.
He moved just a few centimeters to the side and hit the tactical vest hanging on the back of his chair. He casually pulled out an AK magazine from the ammunition pouch and inspected the buried bullets inside carefully.
"By the way, weapons relied on by the Judgement Legion are mainly cold weapons, aren’t they?" Cheng Ziang seemed to have thought of something and asked.
Hu Daoke looked out of the window a few times before turning around and saying, "Yes, all of them are. Even old bolt-action rifles are not there."
"Why did you suddenly ask this?" Luo’er asked.
"According to the intel from headquarters, the enemies of the Judgement Legion, the Theron’s mostly have equipment comparable to the guerrilla units of Earth during World Wars I and II. The prevalence of firearms is very high. I think the Judgement Legion is a bit reckless for not bringing any firearms this time," Cheng Ziang mused.
"Even if they weren’t reckless, they wouldn’t bring any. These people are just like that, convinced that cold weapons are unparalleled, and firearms are heresy!" Hu Daoke said.
"What point are you trying to make?" Luo’er, knowing Cheng Ziang had something to say, asked.
"Do you still remember when we first met Princess Melia..." Cheng Ziang was cut off by Hu Daoke’s cough as a warning.
"Damn it! I’m not asking that, why the hell are you coughing!" Cheng Ziang kicked him and complained.
"Are you talking about the battle between the Princess’s guard and the rebels?" Luo’er asked.
"Exactly," Cheng Ziang nodded and continued, "Even though the rebels couldn’t penetrate the knight’s armor in that battle, they successfully suppressed them, making them immobile. I’m worried the Judgement Legion would face the same situation. More importantly, even without our intervention, the rebels would have retreated because of lack of ammunition. I feel if their ammunition was plentiful, they could have suppressed the knights of the Princess’s Guards to death."
Knowing to use weapons for suppression instead of accurate killing is a step into modern warfare. Since World War I, firearms are more often used for suppression than killing. Although there are examples like the Battles of the Somme and Verdun, overall, the weapon that has killed the most humans is not firearms, but artillery, the god of war.
It’s not surprising that the rebels in Masya knew how to use firepower to suppress their enemies, as they had backing from Earthlings, who taught them how to use firearms. But if the people of Ancient States also knew how to use firepower for suppression–aside from where they learned it–just that alone would be a headache for the Judgement Legion.
Imagine if the Judgement Legion faced the same situation as the Princess’s Guards, being suppressed by the enemy’s firepower and rendered immobile. Then, the Theron would have plenty of time to deploy a more powerful artillery to kill the suppressed Judgement Legion.
Firearms may not be able to defeat these tin cans, but the effect of dozens of rockets raining down would be a different story.
