Chapter 263: Chapter 256: Dr. An Liang’s Advice
The young man quickly went over to support his wife, anxiously calling her name. The translator told us that the princess’ illness was likely due to using magic when she was wounded.
During our conversations with the mages, we had heard them mention things like this before. The body of a mage is like a precise mechanical clock, where magic can only flow without issue in an unharmed body.
However, if a mage is injured, forcibly using magic would cause the magic to be unable to pass through the wound, and it could subsequently accumulate into an illness. The only way for an injured mage to heal their own wounds is to have another mage cast healing magic on them. If they forcefully unleash healing magic themselves, the damage caused would far outweigh the speed of healing.
The princess’s condition didn’t seem to get worse, and she woke up shortly. Seeing the princess’s condition, the leader of the men urged the princess to return with them in a persuasive, coaxing manner. However, the princess evidently didn’t plan to follow their wishes and was determined to stay with the young man. She refused his suggestions.
Seeing his subordinates defeated didn’t seem to fluster the man much; he calmly queried the princess on her choice, and, after seeing her injuries worsen, he didn’t give them any more trouble. Instead, he clenched his teeth, waved his hand reluctantly, and left.
The princess expressed her gratitude for the man’s generosity, and then she left the inn with the younger man’s help. After a while, knights came to assist and, under the man’s command, carried away the injured companion. Soon, traces of the fight were gone, and the place was bustling with guests once again.
After watching the spectacle, Dr. An Liang patted my shoulder, signaling for me to follow him upstairs. He sent the translator away, so it was only the two of us in the hallway t.
Dr. An Liang looked around before asking me in a serious tone, "Aniya is pregnant. What are you planning to do?"
"I... don’t know." This was my true thought, as I really didn’t know what to do at that moment.
Dr. An Liang sighed and then continued, "You should send her to Earth. Otherwise, given her physical condition, the child would also take her life."
"But if we send her to Earth..." I hesitated for a while. If Aniya were sent to Earth, we certainly could not get around the Federal Government. Aniya would undoubtedly be treated as a specimen for their experiments.
"If you trust us, you can send Aniya to us." Dr. An Liang looked around and then said to me seriously.
"Send her... to you?" I stared at Dr. An Liang, finding it hard to grasp his suggestion.
"Rest assured, we won’t harm Aniya," Dr. An Liang said calmly. He then paused before continuing, "You... should know about the Origin Project, right?"
"You too?" As I suddenly realized, "Dr. An Liang, you...?"
I finally understood. Dr. An Liang had been making arrangements for their plan all along, including the couple.
Dr. An Liang looked at me quietly, his gaze somewhat cold. After a while, he lowered his head and continued, "Our project has entered its correct course. We don’t need samples like Aniya for research. Be assured about this. What interests us is whether or not a child of native Earth people and Otherworlders can be born successfully through genetic adjustments."
Then he looked at me in silence before saying coldly, "You should know, from the Otherworld War until now, basically all children born of Earth people and Otherworlders died prematurely, even failed to survive for a year. I don’t believe that you will be luckier than others. If you want to save your child with Aniya, the best solution is to seek our help. Otherwise, your fate wouldn’t be much better than those cross-world families."
Upon hearing his words, I fell silent. I had always been elated in anticipation of becoming a father, and I had never thought of this occurring. What Dr. An Liang said was true. From the Otherworld War until now, there had not been a successful case of a child surviving from the intermixing of Earth and Otherworld people. So I and Aniya would be no exceptions. If we want to save our child, the only way is to seek their help.
While I was still in a daze, Dr. An Liang added, "Also, as you can see, Aniya’s health is poor. She has experienced many inhuman treatments for a long time and has a constitution much weaker than the average person. For her, giving birth to a child is akin to walking through the Ghost Gate."
"Can you guarantee that you won’t hurt Aniya or our child?" I lifted my head to ask.
"Of course, we will not harm Aniya. However, as compensation, the child must grow up in our cultivation base, so we can monitor its indicators."
"You’re going to take our child away?" I asked incredulously.
"Of course not," Dr. An Liang explained, "We want to monitor your child’s health, and it will be safer for them at our base, wouldn’t it? Would you entrust your child to Aniya and let her take them back to Otherworld, or would you bring your child back to Russia?"
"I..." I fell silent. It was certainly not possible to let Aniya bring the child back to Otherworld; she couldn’t even protect herself, how could she protect a child? But if I were to bring the child back to Russia, thinking of that scene terrified me.
"You, you really won’t harm the child?" I asked.
"Of course, we already have our own samples and don’t need your child to be one," Dr. An Liang assured earnestly.
"But, the environment of Earth, the child, they..." It seemed I was becoming more sentimental, asking one question after another.
"The Earth’s environment can ensure the growth of mixed-blood children. As long as they are born and raised on Earth, unlike Otherworlders, they will not have a hard time adapting to the environment of Earth. This has been confirmed by our experiments," explained Dr. An Liang.
"Given the circumstances, I agree to let you take Aniya." Gritting my teeth, I eventually agreed with Dr. An Liang’s proposal. For us, this was the only way, though it came with a price. However, as long as my wife and child were healthy and safe, I didn’t care.
"Very well," Seeing my nod, Dr. An Liang nodded too, then said, "In that case, we should hurry back to Yazhi City!"
"Leave right now?" I asked him in surprise.
"Of course, Aniya’s condition is already quite severe. If we delay any longer, she won’t survive until the day we can get her to Earth." Dr. An Liang explained.
"Then let’s go!" I said anxiously, spurred on by his words.
The diary ends abruptly there, not because Dr. Anatoli stopped writing, but because Baiyue stopped translating. At the end of the corridor, she seemed to see the figure of a person.
"Who’s there?" Luo’er protected Baiyue behind him and asked cautiously.
The figure got closer, and his tall silhouette was so familiar that Luo’er instantly dropped his guard.
"Mr. Sword Saint, it’s you who’s returned!" Luo’er said, showing relief.
Yalunte emerged from the darkness, looking quite disheveled. Seeing Luo’er, he couldn’t help but shake his head and say with a bitter smile, "Damn kid, you took my horse. How was I supposed to return?"
"I’m really sorry, but if we hadn’t done that, then..." Luo’er said with an apologetic look.
"Forget it, Forget it," Yalunte waved his hand, interrupting his apology. He looked at the two of them with a smirk on his face, then asked, "What are you two doing here so late at night, having a secret rendezvous?"
"Mr. Sword Saint, don’t tease us." Luo’er laughed and shook his head, but he failed to notice that Baiyue’s face had already turned bright red, and she was too shy to look at him.
Yalunte heaved a deep sigh of relief. Seeing this, Luo’er quickly stood up and asked, "Mr. Sword Saint, are you going to rest now?"
"Do you still have my room?" Yalunte asked without avoiding the question.
"Sorry, your room isn’t ready yet. You can bunk with me for tonight." Luo’er responded, as he reached their room’s door and opened it.
"Thanks a lot!" Yalunte patted Luo’er’s shoulder heavily. Having someone like Luo’er around made his exhausted heart and body feel somewhat soothed.
"They might be a bit noisy. I apologize if they disturb you," Luo’er continued apologetically.
"It’s okay," Yalunte waved his hand, then looked at Luo’er and Baiyue, and couldn’t help but ask, "What on Earth is keeping you two awake at this ungodly hour?"
"Well, we are listening to a story!" Luo’er hesitated before he answered.
"Is that so?" Yalunte nodded, then he glanced closely at Baiyue. His eyebrows furrowed involuntarily.
"What’s wrong, Mr. Sword Saint?" Noticing his expression, Luo’er couldn’t help but ask.
"Nothing, just a familiar face!" Saying this, Yalunte walked straight into the room, and on his way, he even playfully pinched the bottoms of two sleeping people.
Luo’er watched his actions, sighing with a mix of laughter and helplessness. He shook his head, softly closed the door, and then came over to Baiyue.
"Shall we continue reading?" Baiyue looked up at him, with the glow of her blush still on her face. She looked stunning as the candlelight softly illuminated her.
"Let’s pause here for tonight," Luo’er coughed once, then scratched at his hair, and said somewhat awkwardly, "I, might need to move to your room for the night."
At his words, Baiyue’s cheeks flushed an even deeper shade of red. She tightly clutched the voluminous diary and nodded, barely managing a whispered "Okay."
It was a great honor for the two girls to have Luo’er be willing to stay in their room. However, Baiyue was more reserved. Had it been Tangmo, upon hearing those words, she would most definitely have dragged Luo’er into the room without hesitation.
