Chapter 264: Chapter 257: Mysterious Dream_1

Luo’er followed Baiyue into their room under her guidance, where Tangmo was already asleep. The rhythm of her steady breathing could be heard in the quiet room.

Baiyue carried an oil lamp in one hand, the other hand firmly protecting its weak flame to ensure it would not be extinguished. A diary was tightly gripped under her arm, her body was tense, which was a clear sign of her nervousness.

As they cautiously entered the room, Luo’er could smell a faint, sweet scent in the air, like that of a girl. Oddly, he had never noticed such a fragrance when he was with them before.

Seeing Baiyue’s petite and delicate figure before him, Luo’er’s heart trembled, causing his ears to flush with warmth.

Baiyue placed the oil lamp and diary on the bedside table, her hands shaking slightly. She did not dare to turn around to face Luo’er because she didn’t know what to say to him, nor did she want him to see her embarrassed expression.

Three beds lay parallel to each other in the room. Tangmo slept near the door, while Baiyue’s bed was furthest in, close to the window. After setting down the oil lamp and diary, she cautiously sat on the bed. Given the circumstances, Luo’er was left with no choice but the middle bed.

Baiyue took a deep breath, her heart pounding wildly. Her hands clenched the buttons at chest-level on her dress, her head feeling dizzy and her heart threatening to leap out of her chest. After a moment of hesitation, she decided not to undress, but rather to slip directly under the covers.

"Go...Go...Good Night!" Baiyue nervously stuttered a good night and then lay down with her back to Luo’er.

"Goodnight!" Although Luo’er was also anxious, he wasn’t as nervous as Baiyue. Following her example, he decided to forego removing his coat and slipped under the covers.

While Baiyue had her back to Luo’er, she was still anxious inside. In reality, she wanted to speak to Luo’er at this moment but was unsure how to start. At times, she hated her poor social skills, as the person she liked was so close to her, yet she didn’t know how to initiate a conversation. She could only watch as the opportunity slowly slipped away.

Luo’er lay flat on his back, staring at the ceiling. Baiyue was still with her back to him on his left, her form softly illuminated by the dim light of the oil lamp.

He remembered the first time he saw this girl in a classroom at Haiya Academy. Back then, Baiyue did not recognize him and looked at him with disdain in her icy gaze.

Not just Baiyue, but all the team members weren’t keen on each other back then, even nearing the point of disbanding. Unexpectedly, time passed quickly, and they had become partners for over a year. During this time, they had encouraged and fought for each other, forming a deep bond of friendship.

The Luo’er of the past was a lone wolf. After being betrayed by his grandfather, he became reclusive and indifferent, focusing on learning so he could be sent to the Otherworld. His relationships with Luo Qishan and Wang Xu were not great then; he truly had nothing.

Things were different now; he had companions and had forgiven Luo Qishan’s intentions as a grandfather. It seemed as though everything had changed, yet nothing had really changed. Although he was sent to the Otherworld, his companions were with him, and so was Wang Xu. Luo’er was no longer alone; he had commitments now.

"Luo’er, your ears are so cute, I want to call you Luo’er..." Off to the side, Tangmo mumbled in her sleep, triggering a smile from Luo’er as he recalled when they first met.

Tangmo used to be smitten by elves, but ever since Luo’er arrived, she developed a crush on him, an elf. Although from some people’s perspective, Luo’er looked weak and lacked masculinity - at times even resembling a beautiful girl - in Tangmo’s eyes, he was the perfect image of whom she longed for: handsome and gentle.

Tangmo used to be one of those young, infatuated girls who swooned over attractive guys. But ever since Luo’er struck up a conversation with her, she put an end to those fancies, and wanted only to win over Luo’er.

As Luo’er was immersed in his thoughts, Tangmo suddenly giggled. Unlike her usual disposition, it was a captivating smile that was tinged with an uncanny chill. Luo’er couldn’t help but feel an eerie sense of foreboding.

"What a lovesick fool..."Luo’er clearly heard another voice coming from Tangmo, one that belonged to a provocative, charming woman. The voice was filled with an unhealthy sense of allure, starkly contrasting Tangmo’s lively tone.

Luo’er shuddered, turning to glance at Tangmo. She still slept peacefully, her breath steady and serene. This wasn’t a ghost story, nor was it a dream, but he had indeed heard another voice from Tangmo.

Luo’er swallowed, turning to take a look at Baiyue. The oil lamp was still burning, but Baiyue’s breathing was steady, evidently asleep. She had been so worried about what to say to Luo’er that she unexpectedly fell asleep.

"Did I imagine it?" Luo’er sighed, a cold sweat breaking out on his back. He closed his eyes, willing himself to sleep, but the murmurs of Tangmo beside him continued to trouble him.

He didn’t know if it was an illusion, always feeling that Tangmo beside him was intently staring at him in the dark. Like a beast lurking in the dark and stalking its prey, it gave him an eerie discomfort. However, when he turned his head to look at Tangmo, he found her still deep in sleep, as if what he felt just now was nothing more than an illusion.

But one thing Luo’er remembers clearly is that the voice of this woman, which sounds a lot like Tangmo’s, was much more seductive. The voice carried a somewhat morbid tone that made him feel her inner desires expanding to near overflow, just by listening to it.

Tormented by his thoughts till late into the night, Luo’er could no longer stay awake. He closed his eyes and drifted into a dream. He didn’t have a sound sleep; it felt as if someone was pressing down on him in his dream. When he opened his eyes, a face both familiar and unfamiliar appeared before him.

"Moumou?" cried Luo’er, recognizing her face.

Tangmo was sitting on top of Luo’er, staring at him coldly. Her face did not hold the familiar innocence and naivety as before but rather showed signs of maturity and coolness. She was devoid of any emotions even when she saw Luo’er had woken up.

"No, you are not Moumou, who are you?" Luo’er stared at her with wide eyes and tried to free himself. Strangely, despite the fact that his limbs were not bound, he couldn’t move at all.

Tangmo kept staring at him gloomily, her face a blank mask. Luo’er felt she wasn’t Tangmo because of her terrifying wine-red pupils that could even be seen in the dark, just like a wolf’s eyes reflecting the light.

Despite no wind around, her wine-red hair floated about randomly in the air, as if they were in outer space at that moment.

"Luo’er!" Tangmo spoke. Perhaps it was his imagination, but Luo’er could clearly hear that Tangmo was pronouncing his name differently. Usually, she would call him Luo’er, the latter character pronounced softly, but now she pronounced both characters routinely.

"Moumou likes you so much..." Tangmo said in a monotone devoid of any emotion.

"Moumou?" Luo’er was taken aback. Tangmo wouldn’t usually refer to herself as Moumou.

"Fickle-minded fellow..." Tangmo lowered her head and muttered under her breath, her voice becoming more and more macabre.

"You need to be punished!" She raised her head, her gaze becoming blurry. Her wine-red eyes started to glow invitingly, showing no sign of focus.

"But Moumou can’t bear..." Then, abruptly, she lowered her head and started to mutter again. Suddenly, she raised her head again, coldly looking at him, a twisted expression formed on her face. "Then, just chop off your fingers. For each girl, you’ve been involved with, a finger less."

"Wait, Moumou, no!!" Luo’er finally couldn’t suppress his fear and cried out loud.

Ignoring his pleas, Tangmo lowered her head and squinted, counting on her fingers. "Baiyue... Daier... Kali... Feliz... Melia...."

As she continued, her voice began to tremble, her expression beginning to contort. A hysterical noise came from her throat. "So, so many... Too bad, so you only deserve, to lose, your arms!"

As she spoke, she held a shimmering dagger overhead that appeared out of nowhere in her hands. A twisted, cruel smile found its way onto her previously expressionless face. "Bad boy, you need to be punished!"

Under Luo’er’s horrified gaze, Tangmo drove the dagger heavily into his right arm. The sensation of something stabbing into his flesh jolted Luo’er, his right arm felt detached from his body. He watched in horror as the blood splashed onto Tangmo’s intimidating smiling face, and he found himself unable to utter a sound despite his attempts.

Just like breaking out from hell, Luo’er jolted awake, cold sweat soaking his body. He tried to move his right arm but found it immobile.

He swallowed, then turned his head. Only then did he notice that Tangmo had at some point climbed onto his bed from her own and was tightly clutching his right arm, a look of happiness on her face.

Seeing her face still primarily innocent and pure, Luo’er heaved a sigh of relief. He looked out the window — it was already dawn, and birds were chirping. He couldn’t help but laugh at his needless worry.

He couldn’t believe he had a full night of nightmares just because of an illusion. Luo’er shook his head helplessly, not knowing how to laugh at himself. The last time he had a nightmare was back in Masya when, under his orders, the frontline corps had bombed Yaning’s village. The guilt of this incident haunted him for a long time, giving him nightmares.
