Chapter 206: Chapter 202: Covering the Retreat

Upon hearing the captain’s words, Lin Wei looked around and then scraped all the magazines from Luo Chuan’s side.

"What are you doing?" Luo Chuan asked him.

"I’m going to stay and provide support, so I’m borrowing these magazines. You’re not from our class, you should retreat now." Lin Wei’s voice trembled, but he displayed a brave spirit.

"Piss off, these are my stockpiled ammunition, you leave now, I’ve got this!" Luo Chuan pointed at him rudely.

"But the Captain said..." Lin Wei urgently tried to explain.

"You’re such a coward, your hand shakes even when you’re shooting. You didn’t even hit anyone. Just go, stop getting in my way." Luo Chuan interjected, simultaneously pushing him away from his position.

"What? You!" Shocked by Luo Chuan’s rudeness, Lin Wei was instantly flustered.

"What? Hurry up and skedaddle to the enemy lines and cover my retreat later," said Luo Chuan, looking at him, and then added, "Just don’t hit me with your shaking hands!"

"You..." Lin Wei looked at him gratefully, wanting to say something but hesitating. Finally, he pulled out all his magazines and stacked them on the magazines Luo Chuan had prepared, telling him, "Here you go, hold on!"

"Don’t you need them?" Luo Chuan turned his head to ask him.

"Me, I’m not shooting anymore, afraid I might hit one of our own." Lin Wei said weakly.

"Hmm!" Upon hearing Lin Wei’s words, Luo Chuan couldn’t help but laugh.

Watching Lin Wei turn and leave the trench, Luo Chuan sighed lightly, turned back, and kept aiming at the enemy cavalry and pulling the trigger.

The defensive forces, weakened by the loss of firepower, couldn’t resist the charging heavy cavalry; they sped up towards their positions. Luo Chuan set his rifle to fully automatic, using nearly a whole magazine to topple just one heavy knight, but the knight got back up unfazed.

The defensive forces alone couldn’t resist the charging cavalry, but the Captain was already prepared for a last stand. He had ordered the engineers to set fuses on all the shells on their positions. By firing a rocket into the ammo area from behind, a chain reaction could be triggered, sending the entire artillery position and the enemies who reached them sky high.

Most of the defensive forces had already retreated to the enemy lines. Now they just had to wait for the remaining ones to retreat before detonating the explosives. Suddenly, the Captain looked worried and asked the Lieutenant, "Where is Luo Chuan?"

"Luo Chuan, he..." the lieutenant scanned briefly, his face changing rapidly, "Didn’t I order everyone except Classes One and Three to retreat?"

"Captain," Lin Wei said pale-faced and restlessly, "Luo Chuan, he made me leave, saying he was going to stay and..."

"I ordered Class One and Three to stay, why did he take your place!" The Lieutenant was immediately furious upon hearing this.

"I..." Lin Wei was at a loss for words.

"Order them to retreat immediately!" the Lieutenant shouted.

But before he could finish, the guards on position suddenly opened fire. The enemy cavalry had already broken through their defences and reached their artillery positions.

"All who stayed have been wiped out."

Seeing the cavalry on their position, the Lieutenant’s face turned white. As the enemy cavalry reached their positions, the gunfire from the defense positions became increasingly weak.

"There’s no time," the Captain shouted grimly, "Engineers, detonate the explosives!"

"Captain, let me take some men to check!" The Lieutenant pleaded, throwing himself at the Captain.

"There’s no need," the Captain shook his head, sighed, and said, "They’ve all sacrificed themselves."

The commander, his face etched with despair, watched their military position. Two impeccably aimed rockets fired by the engineers hit the ammunition up on their position and a series of deafening explosions followed. The massive blast waves and fragments surged towards their faces. If they hadn’t taken cover in the trenches in time, they would likely have been knocked out by the shockwave.

After sending Lin Wei away, Luo Chuan continued his futile attack on the enemy. Although it was completely ineffective, occasionally he managed to knock a knight off his horse. Prior to the battle, no one foresaw this outcome. These Otherworld heavy riders seemed invincible, fearlessly charging ahead in the face of their intensive firepower. After realizing that their weapons were utterly useless, all the Earth soldiers were at a loss for how to confront these fully armored cavalrymen.

As the rumble of the riders charged forth, Luo Chuan instinctively cringed and shielded his head, squatting in the trenches and letting the heavily armed cavalry pass over him. He knew he probably wouldn’t make it back; since their weapons didn’t penetrate the armor of these riders, he thought it might be better to save the bullets for the enemies on the home front.

The gunfire from their position slowly ceased. Many soldiers had the same idea as Luo Chuan, but not everyone was as fortunate as he. A machine gun bunker was broken by the riders, a soldier was lifted up by a knight’s pike, and then thrown on the ground. After several agonizing cries, he stopped yelling, no longer breathing.

Rolling torrents of riders passed over their heads. Following the basically successful charge of these knights, Luo Chuan took a deep breath then rose, raising his rifle.

What appeared before his eyes was a unique cavalry unit, composed mainly of women. Each one was fair-skinned with handsome features and a slender physique. They were clad in stunning and expensive-looking light armor, wielding exquisite metal composite bows.

What Luo Chuan found particularly unforgettable were their dark-green pupils and their slightly pointed, drooping ears. He recognized them - they were Elves. The US Armed Forces’ public data on the Otherworld Allied Army introduced them as Wood Elves from a place called the Ilanadale, the Elven Kingdom.

However, in the heat of battle, Luo Chuan had no time to ponder further. He fired his rifle against these charging Elves and utilized all the bullets in full auto, with rather substantial results.

The Elves were not impervious to bullets like the heavy riders, their elegant but thin armor couldn’t withstand the onslaught of Earth weaponry. Luo Chuan managed to down at least five elven soldiers just with the bullets in one cartridge.

Getting feedback lightened Luo Chuan’s spirit, he hurriedly replaced his cartridge to continue the fight. Hearing his gunfire, several teammates also stood up and counterattacked the Elven cavalry. Suddenly, from somewhere not far away, a comrade screamed out in pain. Luo Chuan noticed an elongated arrow protruding from his chest.

He only fired a few shots after reloading when the Elven Cavalry attacked him, shooting a few arrows towards him. This forced him to duck back into the trench. Looking at the trembling arrows on the trench wall, he broke into a cold sweat.

He remembered they were wearing bulletproof vests, and the part where his comrade was hit was around the chest. The bulletproof plates there could resist attack from rifle bullets. Could these Elven arrows be more powerful than the bullets shot from their rifles?

Just as Luo Chuan continued his train of thought, his comrades nearby initiated a counterattack. A few Elven Cavalry were shot off their horses. One of them immediately scrambled to her feet. Her helmet fell to the ground and her long-glistening golden hair cascaded down.

She glared at the soldiers who had shot her down, then pulled a small wooden stick from her waist and started chanting. A fireball sparked at the top of her little stick and with a swift motion, she shot it towards a soldier. The soldier was immediately engulfed in roaring fire. He dropped his gun, and while screaming frantically, he staggered around.

Luo Chuan immediately stood up and aimed his rifle at them, and with a few short bursts, they were quickly dropping. His comrades beside him quickly attempted to put out the fire consuming their comrade but they were unable to quench the raging flames. So, one of them made an instantaneous decision and shot at the burning soldier’s head.

One arrow grazed Luo Chuan’s arm as he was distracted. He immediately turned around and pulled the trigger at the advancing Elven cavalry, successfully knocking one down. Before he even had a chance to feel relieved, he saw a flash before him and an ice spike thrust towards his chest. Although it didn’t pierce the bullet-proof plate on his chest, the enormous impact knocked him to the ground.

Luo Chuan struggled to pick his rifle back up, lying on the ground, he continued to fire. A few bullets hit the Elf soldier’s horse causing her to stumble and fall, and her helmet rolled towards Luo Chuan’s feet, revealing long and soft golden hair.

Another woman!

Luo Chuan stared at her in shock. This Elvish woman glared back at him angrily, then rolled away and picked up her bow and arrows from the ground. In the blink of an eye, she shot three arrows towards him.

Luo Chuan rolled away forcibly, barely avoiding the three arrows. The Elvish woman then pulled out a weirdly shaped dagger and lunged at Luo Chuan.

She seemed to have figured out the mechanics of Luo Chuan’s rifle, seeking to close the gap and nullify his ranged advantage by taking the fight to close quarters.

Luo Chuan had his rifle horizontally, bracing against her attack while he lay on the ground. The Elvish woman pressed on with all her weight. They were face to face, within less than twenty centimeters of each other. Luo Chuan could see her delicate features and green eyes, just as she could see his pitch-black hair underneath his helmet.

Luo Chuan was taken aback by her unexpected strength, he shoved her aside with force and her dagger was plunged deep into the dirt. Luo Chuan rolled to the side for a few meters and then rose, aiming his rifle at her.

The Elvish woman, at this moment, was hurriedly picking up her bow from the ground and pulling an arrow out from the quiver. Luo Chuan inexplicably was slightly reluctant to pull the trigger, but she showed no such mercy. Within a split second, her bow was loaded and the arrow flew directly towards him.

The arrow accurately struck his right upper chest, causing him to falter and reflexively jerk the trigger. The bullet immediately landed on the Elvish woman’s shoulder, making her reel backwards in pain.

Just as the two of them were about to land, a sudden explosion broke out. The retreating troops had detonated the ammunition at their position. The shockwave swept them both away. Luo Chuan’s head smashed into a rock nearby and darkness consumed his vision in an instant, as he lost consciousness.
