Chapter 207: Chapter 203: Encounter with the Elf
"Oh, is the elf you mentioned who fought with your dad really your mom?" Hu Daoke couldn’t help asking excitedly.
"Yeah," Luo’er nodded, "To be honest, even I’m not sure how they ended up together."
"That’s so romantic! Enemies on the battlefield eventually become lovers, much like a plot in a romance novel." Tangmo, hugging Luo’er’s arm, had a dreamy look on his face.
Baiyue was sitting on the other side, her eyes wide open and fists clenched, eager to know what happens next.
"If your parents were always at each other’s throats every time they met, I can’t imagine what it would have been like when they were together." Hu Daoke folded his arms and made a satisfied nod, believing he was making a valid point.
"There’s nothing like what you’re imagining," Luo’er winked and laughed, "They both have a very gentle temperament. They never argue when they’re together, they don’t even raise their voices."
"You’re an idiot. Luo’er is so even-tempered, it must be the influence of his parents." Cheng Ziang, resting his cheek on his hand, shook his head in exasperation.
"You two stop interrupting, Luo’er hasn’t finished his story yet," Tangmo gave them a dissatisfied look, then hugging Luo’er’s arm, said expectantly, "Luo’er, continue!"
"I understand." Luo’er nodded, his thoughts returning to the events of the past again.
...
When Luo Chuan woke up, it was almost dark, the sky was filled with dense gunpowder smoke, and debris was scattered around. The explosion in the artillery position had been so intense that all living creatures within a radius of tens of meters were shook to death by the shock wave. Even the Otherworld heavy cavalry, wearing armour like a tin can, weren’t spared.
Luo Chuan struggled to get up. Dust fell from his body, making a soft sound as it hit the ground, spreading in every direction. Fully equipped heavy cavalry, even when lying on the ground, were as high as a small hill. Even so, they couldn’t withstand the shockwave from the explosions. It was a miracle that Luo Chuan had not been shaken to death.
He took a deep breath of the air mixed with gunpowder. His throat felt a painful burn. He quickly found his water bottle, took a few sips, and felt a little better.
He sat on the ground, looking dejectedly at the battlefield around him. It was a mess. Countless bodies lay on the ground, small and large craters giving off trails of black smoke. Loyal warhorses stood guard near their dead masters, letting out long cries of grief.
This was Luo Chuan’s first battle as a soldier, and it might also be his last. Before the battle began, he never imagined this could be the outcome. Before the battle, the U.S. Army had released a video of their counterattack on the Otherworld army that invaded Australia. The video showed the U.S. forces mobilized large numbers of air units to support ground armored forces. Despite facing against the Otherworld Allied Army of hundreds of thousands, the battle was overwhelmingly in their favour.
With the support of Earth’s technology, the U.S. forces managed to control the airspace. Various air force units continuously rained down firepower from above while the main battle tanks along with armored cars pushed forward, blocking the oncoming rush of the Allied Army’s cavalry.
So before the battle started, Luo Chuan believed the Otherworld Allied Army would retreat under their powerful firepower. But to his surprise, the defense forces and artillery could not stop the charge of the Otherworld Allied Army’s heavy cavalry and were forced to retreat in disgrace.
The post-war summary pointed out the reasons for the failure in this war. Losing the home-field advantage and the support of technology accounted for only forty-five percent of the reason. Ten percent was attributed to other reasons, while the rest of the forty-five percent was due to the chaos in the command department of the Allied forces.
Because it was a multinational operation, the command department was unable to assume unified command due to conflicts between several major powers. Each of the countries’ armies fought their own battles. That’s what led to the failure of the war.
If only Luo Chuan and his forces were able to mount a counter-offensive while resisting the invasion of the Otherworld Allied Army. They could have certainly defeated the Otherworld forces with their superior firepower.
While the Otherworlders had home-field magical advantage, Earth’s civilization was far advanced by hundreds of years. If the forces of various nations hadn’t each fought their own battles but united together instead, the Otherworld Allied Army, even with the advantages of magic, would have had a hard time defeating Earth’s armies with their powerful modern firepower.
Among the multinational forces, NATO’s were the most united. Thus, the fact that they were able to hold on for five days despite being surrounded after their backline crumbled undeniably proved the superiority of Earth’s military power.
But it’s too late for ifs and buts now. Moving through the multinational forces’ rear like a plague of locusts, the Otherworld Allied Army broke through each of the independent fighting multinational forces. All that’s left have now taken shelter around the Otherworld Gate.
Luo Chuan took a deep breath, finally feeling the sharp pain in his right chest. Lowering his head, he found the golden arrow piercing through the plate on his chest, its tail trembling slightly.
He took a deep breath, grabbed the arrowhead with one hand and the shaft with the other, then broke it off with a swift motion. The wooden shaft snapped immediately. He dropped the broken shaft to the ground. As he had exerted some force in his earlier action, it led to a severe pain on his chest, causing him to grit his teeth from the pain.
He took a good rest before finally regaining his strength. He looked at the elf corpses sprawled on the ground not far away, and he couldn’t help but feel a wave of fear. He had thought that their bulletproof vests were immune to weapons in this Otherworld, but he hadn’t expected them to be easily pierced by the arrows of the Elven Cavalry, which made him look at the equipment of the Otherworld army in a new light.
Just as he was lost in thought, the body lying not far from him suddenly moved and emitted a soft whimpering sound. This scared him, and he quickly picked up the rifle on the ground, pointing it at the body.
The body suddenly moved again. Right after, he saw the elf cavalry, who should have already been dead, slowly rise from the ground.
Looking at her face, Luo Chuan was momentarily stunned. This resurrected elf was none other than the female elf who shot an arrow through his bulletproof vest before he fell unconscious.
"Don’t move!" Luo Chuan sat on the ground, aiming his rifle at her.
Hearing Luo Chuan’s words, the female elf was taken aback and quickly tried to pick up the bow and arrow next to her. Luo Chuan fired a shot at the ground, causing a cloud of dust to rise. The bullet hit the bow next to her, shattering it into two pieces.
Seeing that Luo Chuan had complete control of the scene, the female elf reluctantly stopped, turned her body around, and watched him carefully, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
The muzzle of Luo Chuan’s gun was aimed at her. After a long silence, he placed the rifle on the ground and made a gesture for the female elf to leave.
"Never mind, just go!"
It was not that Luo Chuan was being soft-hearted, but he felt there was no necessity to fight the female elf to death. Although they had engaged in bloody combat before, that was on the battlefield. Now, they were both remnants of the war, surviving against the odds. There was no deep enmity between them, no need to aim for the other’s death.
The female elf, with her inherently large eyes, stared blankly at Luo Chuan’s actions. She was puzzled by his generosity.
She pointed at herself dumbly, her voice hoarse. Hearing her voice, Luo Chuan was momentarily stunned, then he tossed his water bottle to her.
The female elf was startled when the water bottle was thrown towards her. She looked carefully at the bottle that fell to the ground. She hesitated for a while before picking it up. There was still half a bottle of water inside. She shook it but didn’t know how to open it.
Luo Chuan leaned against a tree stump that had been broken by the blast. Watching her clumsiness, he sighed deeply. He then picked up another water bottle that was blown over, motioned her to watch, and demonstrated how to unscrew the bottle’s cap.
Following his demonstration, the female elf clumsily unscrewed the cap. She shook the bottle, and the water inside splashed out, wetting her face. Feeling the cool water, the female elf could no longer control herself and drank gulps of water from the bottle.
The refreshing water immediately revitalized her. Because she drank too fast, she ended up choking and coughed violently while holding onto the bottle.
After finishing the water, the female elf screwed the cap back on. Then, with a grateful look on her face, she carefully handed the water bottle to Luo Chuan.
There were three meters between them. Luo Chuan did not reach out to accept it but motioned for her to place it on the ground.
The female elf obediently placed the water bottle on the ground. Then she knelt on the ground. Both of them didn’t know what to say. Of course, they couldn’t understand each other’s language either. They just sat quietly on the spot.
She moved her body slightly and immediately felt a surge of pain from her shoulder. Looking down, she saw that her exquisite, yet thin, shoulder armor had been pierced. A bullet had gone through her shoulder. Although it had already scabbed over, a little move would cause fresh blood to seep out from the scabbed wound.
When she looked at the rifle beside Luo Chuan, this weapon from Earth that had shot through her shoulder in an instant, she couldn’t help but fear the weapon. Though she held some resentment towards Luo Chuan, when she saw the broken arrow shaft in Luo Chuan’s chest, she felt relieved.
Even though Luo Chuan had shot her in the shoulder, she had also shot an arrow through his chest. It could be said that they were even. But they both miraculously survived the blast, causing Luo Chuan to take a few more glances at her.
Confronted by Luo Chuan’s unabashed gaze, the female elf seemed a bit shy. She lowered her head, not daring to look directly into Luo Chuan’s eyes. After regaining some strength, she carefully stood up and looked at him with pleading eyes.
Luo Chuan knew what she was thinking, so he didn’t pick up the rifle on the ground but waved his hand at her, indicating that she could leave. Although fearful she might arm herself and attack him, Luo Chuan still chose to believe she was not the vindictive type of person.
