Chapter 1094: Chapter 1087: Pride and Prejudice
Hearing the woman’s words, Talis stepped forward, opened her arms, and also spoke a bunch of Elvish that no one could understand.
"Luo’er, what are they saying?" Tangmo tugged at Luo’er’s sleeve and asked.
"I don’t know either, I can’t understand..." Luo’er answered in a low, embarrassed voice.
"Talis is reporting to that woman; it looks like they’re here to meet us," Baiyue glanced at Tangmo, then seriously responded.
Although she hadn’t fully mastered Elvish, she had memorized a considerable portion of the vocabulary and sentence structures, so getting the gist was not a problem.
After conversing with Talis for a while, the woman turned her horse toward Luo’er and, upon first sight of him, immediately frowned, then pointed at Luo’er with the hand holding a whip and, from her superior position, asked in Tasta, "Are you the guests mentioned by the Great Priest?"
"Since you know we’re guests, show us some respect. What are you trying to do with that attitude?" Tangmo couldn’t stand by as Luo’er was treated so disrespectfully and stepped forward angrily.
"Respect? Night Elves have never felt that Wood Elves are deserving of respect!" The woman coldly answered, not at all hiding the contempt in her heart.
"If that’s the case, then we shouldn’t bother ourselves," Cheng Ziang said with a smile and shrugged, then waved his hand, "Let’s go, to the harbor, to find a ship back to the Continent. Talis, you’re home now, take care of yourself."
With that, he signaled to everyone to start walking north, and Talis immediately became anxious, blocking their way and saying, "Wait, the Prime Fluid...!"
"Ha, what, Prime Fluid? Sorry, that’s ours!" Cheng Ziang’s smile turned into a smirk, squinting his eyes smugly at Talis.
"Stop joking, if you want to leave, first hand over the Prime Fluid. You promised to help us," Talis said with a frown.
"You also promised to ensure our safety and to help Luo’er escape Tana’s restraint. Seeing your current attitude, I have doubts about your fulfilling that promise. So, to be safe, we better go back. Wait until you’ve discussed how to deal with us, then come find us," said Cheng Ziang in an unhurried tone.
"This..." Talis hesitated, glanced at the Night Elf woman, then turned back, struggling to say, "The animosity between Night Elves and Wood Elves has lasted for a thousand years, so their disdain for Luo’er is somewhat inevitable. With me here, I can assure your safety, so..."
Before she could finish her words, Cheng Ziang suddenly erupted, indignantly shouting, "What kind of talk is this, ’somewhat inevitable’? Luo’er is our Advance Team Captain, our headquarters’ representative. To disrespect him is to disrespect our Advance Team, our headquarters. What, do you expect all of us to grovel before you Night Elves? On what grounds, what right do you have to look down on us, to discriminate against us outsiders? Is this how you on Xia Yue Island treat your guests?"
"Outsider, mind your behavior; this is Xia Yue Island. Don’t be so vulgarly loud!" Before Cheng Ziang could even grasp the situation, the Night Elf woman added fuel to the fire, pointing at him and scolding loudly.
Her words were almost like a command, and as soon as she finished, her entourage all took rifles from their shoulders and aimed at the Advance Team members.
Indeed, these people were equipped with firearms from Earth, although most were civilian bolt-action rifles. They also sported short swords at their waists with an air of twenty-first-century Byzantine soldiers.
The Advance Team members weren’t about to show weakness either and each raised their weapons at them. If it really came to a shootout, the Advance Team might win but would certainly pay a price, for the weapons in these Night Elves’ hands were rifles, not mere fire sticks.
Wadulan was not to be outdone either. He had not easily climbed up the ranks to lean on Luo’er’s support within headquarters, and he naturally did not want to give up such benefits. So, he drew his small pistol and aimed it at Talis.
Talis turned back and forth, but was at a loss, not knowing what to say. She was so anxious that she started hopping on the spot.
In fact, the reason Cheng Ziang took Luo’er’s discrimination so seriously was that it had deeper implications, rather than merely resorting to violence at the drop of a hat.
The first layer of meaning was that as the Captain of the Advance Team, Luo’er had a very high status in everyone’s minds. Therefore, they would neither expect nor permit anyone to discriminate against or slander Luo’er, as it was tantamount to a slap in their own faces.
The second layer of meaning was that as representatives of headquarters, with Luo’er as the head of the Advance Team, if the Night Elves didn’t even regard him, then the actions of the Advance Team were bound to be hindered in various ways.
So, the reason Cheng Ziang lashed out was not only to get an explanation for Luo’er but also to elevate the status of the Advance Team in the eyes of the Night Elves. Otherwise, if the Night Elves showed a condescending attitude towards them as they were now, many reasonable opinions of the Advance Team would definitely be ignored.
Equality, equality, and again equality. For Cheng Ziang and even the Advance Team, this was of utmost importance. That’s why he used Luo’er’s incident as leverage, even at the risk of causing a confrontation between the two sides.
However, judging from Luo’er’s expression, Luo’er obviously condoned his actions. After all, as the strategist of the Advance Team, Cheng Ziang was often in accord with Luo’er.
The reason Luo’er could be Captain was mainly that he dared to take responsibility for his own decisions. In contrast, Cheng Ziang had made his stance clear from the beginning—he would not be responsible for his own decisions, which also led to his inability to take on responsibilities as Luo’er did.
In such a situation where neither side was willing to give in, the best course was to wait for a third party to give each other a way out. However, awkwardly, Wadulan, who was most likely to become the mediator, had already been bought over by Luo’er and sided with him, now pointing a gun at Talis. Asking him to act as a mediator now clearly lacked persuasiveness.
Of course, besides him, there were others who could potentially act as mediators, such as Talis herself. If she could step up to speak, perhaps the situation might be relieved somewhat, but unfortunately, she seemed somewhat overwhelmed.
Noticing this, Wadulan put down his weapon, then looked at the panic-stricken Talis and said, "Hey, Night Elf, don’t you want to say something about this? I’ve always heard that the Night Elves are equitable and open; is this how you treat visitors from afar? If so, then all those things you Night Elves have said before are lies, aren’t they?"
Wadulan’s series of questions not only made Talis’s complexion worsen but also caused the Elf woman to look troubled.
Talis was silent for a long time, then turned to look up at the Elf woman, speaking urgently in Elvish. According to Baiyue’s translation, she seemed to be urging the Elf woman to stay calm, given that the Advance Team had something they needed.
Hearing her words, the Elf woman frowned and pointed at Luo’er, saying quite a bit in return. The gist was that since they were already on Xia Yue Island, they might as well kill the members of the Advance Team and seize what they needed.
Talis tried to persuade her earnestly, telling the Elf woman that Luo’er had an extraordinary power by his side and that their own strength was not weak, so rash actions would be detrimental rather than beneficial.
The Elf woman hung her head, silent for a moment, then nodded in agreement with Talis. She then looked at Luo’er and said something in Elvish. Baiyue realized it was roughly an apology to Luo’er. However, using Elvish that Luo’er couldn’t understand obviously still indicated stubbornness, an unwillingness to bend.
"Speak in human language!" Cheng Ziang frowned, shouting loudly, as he was not going to give the Elf woman a chance to play smart.
The Elf woman glared at him fiercely, then took a deep breath and said to Luo’er with a displeased face, "I am very sorry that our mistake has offended you. You are all esteemed guests of Xia Yue Island. I had no intention of discriminating against or belittling anyone. Since you have come to Xia Yue Island, we should indeed treat you with respect."
