Chapter 1054: Chapter 1047: Village in the Valley
Following a desolate and secluded forest path, a group of people moved forward, arriving at the entrance of a gorge.
It must be said, the Wolfman Clan was extremely cautious, only carving out a few ant trails among the shrubbery, through which everyone had to travel.
With the dense bushes, at first glance it was nearly impossible to see the paths; without these Wolfmen to guide them, it was estimated they would have wandered the forest for a long time without finding a way in.
Wolfman men often ventured outside to hunt and gather, while the majority of women stayed at home to keep house. Upon reaching the gorge’s entrance, Luo’er saw several stone markers piled up to over three meters high.
But even so, they weren’t conspicuous in the dense forest, only recognizable to Wolfmen familiar with the area.
Led by the Wolfman Leader, Luo’er and his companions travelled along a small path within the gorge. After about two hundred meters, their view abruptly opened up. Amidst the lush shrubbery and tall trees, a hidden valley resembling a paradise revealed itself before them.
This was a very large valley, round in shape, somewhat similar to a meteorite crater. However, whether meteorites existed in the Otherworld was still debatable.
Based on the Ancestors’ statements, the sky was merely a beautiful picture; they even compared the sky of Earth to that of the Otherworld to suggest that it was impossible to travel from the Otherworld sky to the cosmos.
As for this theory, Luo’er couldn’t judge. Having read some science fiction works, he boldly speculated that the cosmos of the Otherworld might have become two-dimensional, yet for some unknown reason, this particular planet in the Otherworld hadn’t been affected. Thus, the Ancestors’ claim — the sky was only a beautiful canvas.
Of course, what exactly the Otherworld’s sky contained required in-depth exploration, and it wasn’t something that could be deduced from mere speculation. Before the truth was uncovered, Luo’er remained skeptical about these claims.
The circular valley was surrounded by steep mountains, forming an invisible wall that protected the inhabitants within. The only way in and out of the valley was the path they had taken.
Between two mountains lay this gorge, with very steep and treacherous sides that, if fortified, could be an impregnable pass; in fact, this was what the Wolfman Clan had done.
At the mouth of the gorge, the Wolfmen had purposely used a large number of stones to construct a simple wall and set up visible and hidden sentry posts; overall, their sense of defense was no less than Luo’er had imagined.
The valley was very spacious, with a radius of over two kilometers and an area of about seven square kilometers. The terrain was quite flat with streams cascading down and flowing into underground channels.
It fulfilled most conditions for living; calling it a pure land beyond the mortal world wouldn’t be an exaggeration.
A few dozen households were scattered throughout the valley, with the houses mainly constructed from wood, though there were also a few made of stone and wooden shingles. It was now noon, and smoke gently rose from the houses in the valley, creating a poetic and picturesque scene.
Of course, if one didn’t look at the Wolfmen’s faces, everything here seemed so idyllic, just like the Taoyuan Village mentioned in the writings of Tao Yuanming. The ferocious beast-like heads of the Wolfmen could, in an instant, interrupt everyone’s reverie and pull them back to reality.
Despite their fierce appearance, Luo’er did not change his view of them. He noticed that the valley’s Wolfmen mostly wore clothes made of hemp or animal skins; the men often went bare-chested, while the women did not.
The male Wolfmen seemed to have a strange grease smeared on their bodies, preventing insect bites. However, not all the male Wolfmen were bare-chested; many were clothed.
Luo’er also noticed that their clothing wasn’t simply stitched together from animal hides or hemp; it had distinctive features, and he suspected that this could be a fashion originating from the East Continent.
From these observations, Luo’er became more convinced the Wolfman Clan wasn’t as barbaric as they appeared; they were essentially a civilized group, and although isolated from the world for many years, their civilization hadn’t regressed.
Actually, after arriving in the valley, almost everyone except Luo’er was on edge, fearing they had walked into a dangerous situation. But only Luo’er remained calm, believing that what the eyes see isn’t always the truth.
"You wait here, while I go notify the elders," the Wolfman Leader said to Luo’er, after leading the group to the valley and turning to address them.
"As guests who have come from afar, don’t you think it’s a bit impolite to treat us this way?" Luo’er asked with a smile.
Upon hearing Taran’s translation, the Wolfman Leader’s mouth twitched, revealing long, sharp fangs. After taking a deep breath, he nodded and said, "Then please wait at the welcoming platform."
"Thank you for leading the way," Luo’er said with a nod.
Confronted with Luo’er’s insistent manner, the Wolfman Leader appeared helpless. He waved his hand irritably, signaling his subordinates to lead Luo’er and his party to the so-called welcoming platform to await the arrival of the Wolfman elders.
The so-called welcoming platform was a high stage built in front of the mountain slope houses, somewhat reminiscent of the kind of front porch platform common among the southern minorities, mostly made of bamboo and wood, and could be considered an extension of the space in front of the houses.
The platform was covered with a thick layer of vine plants, which completely shaded the welcome stage from the sunlight. Standing under the vines, one could actually feel quite cool.
"Luo’er, look!"
The view from the platform was very open, and following the direction pointed by Cheng Ziang, they all saw a huge skeleton lying at the foot of the valley, with vines entwined around the skeleton, giving it the appearance of a giant plant beast at a casual glance.
Although it was not close, Luo’er could still feel the oppressive presence of the massive thing. Judging by the size of the skeleton, that creature must have been extraordinarily large. Luo’er did some quick calculations — it had to be at least as big as two 100,000-ton aircraft carriers.
Such a colossal creature lying quietly in this valley truly filled them with amazement and puzzlement.
It seemed that this must be the remains of the Overturning Beast that had brought them from the East Continent to the Western Continent, the very same "Lord Leiyun" referred to by the Wolfman Leader.
Before seeing the Overturning Beast, Luo’er thought it probably wasn’t much different from a whale, but now it seemed his imagination had been sorely lacking; the Overturning Beast really could be considered a Sky Lonely Island.
"My God, it’s so big..." Luo’er’s eyes widened, and he couldn’t help exclaiming. Baiyue hurriedly took out her camera and began to photograph it.
"If the Kunzhou is indeed that big, then I no longer doubt their words. With such a huge size, not to mention a thousand people, probably ten thousand could fit inside," Cheng Ziang shook his head and remarked.
"But, if they had such a large Kunzhou, why did they choose to flee in the face of the East Continent Clan, and even have their Kunzhou so badly damaged?" Luo’er said, somewhat puzzled.
"It seems there are only two possible explanations," Cheng Ziang said, raising his forefinger, "Either the East Continent Clan had countermeasures against the Kunzhou, or the East Continent Clan’s army also used Kunzhou as their warships."
"Heh," Luo’er couldn’t help laughing at his explanation, then shook his head and said, "Using Kunzhou as warships would indeed be a spectacular sight. Earthlings probably won’t reach that level for hundreds of years..."
"That’s the charm of Otherworld, defying the common sense of Earth, yet only conforming to the laws of Otherworld," Cheng Ziang said with a smile.
"They lost the sky but grew wings..." Baiyue, who was busy taking photographs, suddenly chimed in.
"Sigh..." Hearing her words, everyone, for some reason, let out a sigh of reflection.
It wasn’t long before Luo’er saw the Wolfmen, who were observing them, begin to stir. Soon after, an extremely burly Wolfman stepped out from the crowd and walked straight towards Luo’er and the group.
His stature was exceptionally tall, so much so that even Cheng Ziang from the Advance Team, who was the tallest among them, could only look up at him. This inexplicable sense of pressure was starting to make the Advance Team feel tense.
