Chapter 1053: Chapter 1046: Pride and Prejudice
The Wolfman Leader, looking sullen, stared at Luo’er blockaded by his words not knowing what else he should say, and could only sulk silently.
Seeing his demeanor, Luo’er sighed softly and then continued, "So many years have passed since this happened, and what should be let go of should really be let go. For centuries, you have lived isolated from the world, so do you think the days of others have been any easier?"
While speaking, Luo’er gently patted Taran’s head, then told him, "Their village was attacked by the Beastman Race a few years ago, hundreds were killed, and to this day, the village hasn’t recovered from the shock. There’s no need to continue this hatred, let go of what should be let go. Since you both come from afar, you should support each other, rather than never dealing with each other till death."
Luo’er’s speech was lengthy, and Taran’s translation was stilted, taking a long time to translate all of the words to the Wolfman Leader. Hearing this, the Wolfman Leader lowered his head, sinking into a lengthy silence.
"Stranger, did you come here just to alleviate the grudge between us and them?" After a long while, the Wolfman Leader finally spoke up.
"Of course not," Luo’er shook his head, then continued, "Earlier you questioned whether I was an Elf. Now, let me answer you. In principle, I am indeed a Half-elf, but also, I am an Earthling."
"Earthling?" The Wolfman Leader appeared confused by this transliterated term, which if translated literally, would still mean ’Otherworlder.’
"Through the Otherworld Gate, from another world," Luo’er explained.
"What is the purpose of your visit?" the Wolfman Leader asked.
"Our main goal is to investigate the Scouring Sky Beast, and if you could cooperate with us, that would be best," Luo’er said.
"What exactly do you want to do by investigating Lord Leiyun?" Luo’er’s words made the Wolfman Leader wary again.
"Don’t be nervous, don’t be nervous. We have no ill intentions, it’s just out of curiosity for the investigation. If we confirm that you all come from another continent, maybe one day, we can send you back," Luo’er reassured.
"Without Lord Leiyun, how could you send us back?" Luo’er’s words truly moved the Wolfman Leader, but after calming down a bit, he still voiced his doubt.
"There are many ways, you just don’t know them. If you still think about returning to your homeland, then you shouldn’t be so resistant to us. I reiterate, we have no malintent whatsoever on this trip, just purely for investigation. I hope you can trust me for the fate of your race, can you?" Luo’er said.
The Wolfman Leader stared at Luo’er, and after deliberating for a long time, he finally wavered, "I cannot decide this matter alone, please allow me to go back and consult the elders."
"Hold on," Luo’er called to the Wolfman Leader who was about to leave, then said with a smiling face, "Guests from afar bring good cheer, throwing your guests into this wilderness isn’t quite right, is it?"
"I still don’t trust you all, feeling that you might cause some trouble, so it’s better you wait here," the Wolfman Leader coldly said.
"There are many of you, few of us, plus we’re on your territory, do you still worry we might play tricks?" Luo’er asked.
"This..." Again, Luo’er’s words rendered the Wolfman Leader speechless. After struggling for a while, he finally softened his stance and waved his hand saying, "Fine then, follow us, but remember, no tricks allowed."
"Of course, as long as you adhere to the rules and don’t be cunning, we definitely won’t play any tricks," Luo’er smiled and warned him.
"Let’s go..." The Wolfman Leader looked at everyone doubtfully, then nodded.
And so, the group followed him towards the gorge while other Wolfmen surrounded them, vigilantly watching over them, clearly still not very trusting of Luo’er and his group.
"Luo’er..." Along the way, Baiyue walked up to Luo’er, glanced around, and then gently tugged at his sleeve.
"What’s wrong?" Luo’er asked.
"I just feel a bit uneasy. Could these people be planning to take us back and eat us?" Baiyue said worriedly.
"That’s hardly possible. If they ate humans, they wouldn’t have let that Beastman just rot in the forest earlier," Luo’er said with a comforting smile.
"But..." Baiyue frowned, looking as if she wanted to say more but hesitated.
"I know what you’re thinking. You think these people look like wild beasts, so their behaviors and manners must be no different from those of wild beasts. Yue’er, you’re making the mistake of judging by appearances. They might look like wild beasts, but that doesn’t mean we should treat them as beasts. That’s prejudice."
"I admit not everyone in this world is the same. Each race has its strengths and weaknesses, but as members of the intelligentsia, certain characteristics are fundamentally similar. We should not stereotype them or treat them differently based on those generalizations, How is that any different from what some Western countries do?"
"Hehe," Cheng Ziang chuckled upon hearing Luo’er’s words.
"Why are you laughing?" Baiyue turned her head and asked somewhat displeased.
"In some respects, your level of thought really isn’t as high as Luo’er’s..." Cheng Ziang said as he shook his head with a smile.
"I’m just worried about our safety," Baiyue said, her head lowered in a show of false bravery.
"If everyone in the world were as understanding as Luo’er, I suppose there would have been no conflicts long ago," Cheng Ziang remarked.
"It’s not some amazing ability, so why praise me so highly?" Luo’er said, shaking his head helplessly.
"No, no, no, it is an incredible ability. Just being fair to everyone is something you’ve already excelled at, beyond most people, even I can’t manage it. Honestly, Luo’er, if it were me, I would definitely not want to negotiate with these Wolfmen. Violence is the best and most direct form of communication," Cheng Ziang said, waving his hand.
"There’s no sign that this Wolfman Clan is still in a chaotic primitive state. The Rabbit-Ear Race, who fled with them long ago, was able to integrate into the people of the Western Continent and even participated in the Second Otherworld War. This shows that their level of civilization was not low when they fled. So, we shouldn’t arrogantly think that they are like the Cannibal Race on Earth, still in a primitive and ignorant period, just because of their fierce appearance," Luo’er firmly stated.
"Ah, the righteous light!" Cheng Ziang gave a thumbs-up.
"Stop it!" Luo’er said bashfully, waving his hand.
In fact, it isn’t correct to describe these people as members of the Wolfman Clan because, as previously mentioned, they only look like Wolfmen at first glance. In reality, their faces are shorter, resembling somewhat the facial features of felines. To be more precise, they should be called Wolf-Tiger people.
Earthlings have always adopted a simple, direct naming technique for animals of the Otherworld, namely naming them after whatever they resemble on Earth. For instance, a herbivorous animal resembling a deer is simply called some kind of deer. A carnivorous animal resembling a tiger is straightforwardly referred to as some kind of tiger.
Of course, each animal has its own names in the Otherworld, and different languages refer to these animals differently in the Otherworld. But as soon as they are translated into the languages of Earth, they are renamed into some kind of deer, some kind of tiger.
Powerful technology and advanced culture have given Earth civilization a crushing lead over Otherworld civilizations, thereby objectively influencing the development of Otherworld culture.
For instance, the magic levels defined by Earthlings have even been adopted by the most conservative Church Court. Thus, more and more people of the Otherworld are beginning to accept Earthlings’ naming conventions for Otherworld animals, effectively turning internal sales into exports.
If the members of the Wolfman Clan had a different appearance, such as only having a pair of wolf ears like the Beast-Ear Race, they would probably be more acceptable to others.
However, it is their current fierce appearance that causes those who see them to instinctively feel distrustful. It is only someone like Luo’er, who dares to converse with them, that can see right through the true nature of prejudice.
