Chapter 423: Chapter 374 Gatekeeper Slaier
The devout old Believer Parker was astonished to hear that the "Primordial Messenger" Mira was leaving.
Of course, he knew that Mira had performed many miracles these past days, but her sudden departure perplexed Parker.
In Parker’s view, after Mira’s arrival in the city below, something significant should have happened, like the appearance of the Primordial or the announcement of God’s will... but none of these occurred. The Primordial Messenger arrived in the Land of No Light without any indication, performed miracles, and then left just as unannounced.
This wasn’t even a case of starting with a bang and ending with a whimper; it was nothing but whimper from start to finish.
Mira naturally saw through Parker’s confusion.
To calm the old Believer, Mira spoke out,
"Do you really presume to guess at the immortal God’s intentions? You can’t even comprehend how thunder comes to be, how could you understand His plans?"
The old Believer Parker showed realization and then ceased his questioning.
At Mira’s command, Parker hurriedly prepared the carriage to take them away from the city below.
The Land of No Light was always dim, with no clear distinction between day and night, yet, people still needed rest, so they left when most were resting.
Watching the carriage slowly drive out of the city below, Mira breathed slightly easier.
Anos sat in the deepest part of the carriage.
Mira softly chanted in Ancient Language, shielding the inside of the carriage from external ears, ensuring that whatever they said, old Believer Parker would not hear.
The girl tiptoed closer to the Princess in front of her.
The latter gazed out the carriage window, what she saw, only she knew.
"Anos... after we leave the Empire, where do you want to go?" Mira asked in a softened voice.
Anos smiled and turned to her saying,
"Where we go, isn’t that up to your wishes?"
There was a hint of annoyance in her words.
Unperturbed or perhaps not noticing, Mira straightened up and innocently smiled,
"Of course. Wherever you want to go, I must consent.
I cannot let you return to this city below, nor let you have any contact with the Primordial Church."
The Princess looked at her and shook her head helplessly,
"Really... so self-satisfied.
Never mind, have it your way, even if you’re over the moon, I won’t take it to heart."
Mira sensed the complexity in Anos’ mood.
Reunited with her once dead mother, discovering the entire truth, realizing she was the Primordial Messenger foretold in the Prophecy, knowing the Delos Family had ties with the Primordial Church... a mess of events tangled up, making it hard to discern the truly correct path.
Mira saw Anos’ distress and pain, saw the Princess forced to choose her family to end the confusion...
But as a partial Observer, Mira knew Anos was making the wrong choice.
Thus, she forcefully took away the Princess’s right to choose.
Anos looked out the carriage window, the city below growing ever distant, and said wistfully,
"It turns out... I haven’t seen my mother for so many years."
Mira reassured her,
"It’s okay, Anos, there will be a chance to meet in the future."
Anos glanced at her,
"That’s quite an irresponsible promise."
Mira sheepishly scratched her cheek.
"But... it’s also something from the past now, being able to see my mother again already makes me thrilled."
Anos lowered her gaze and sighed,
"...even this moment is becoming the past."
Mira, feeling uneasy, softly changed the subject,
"Anos, tell me where you want to go? I will agree as long as it’s not excessive."
The Princess pondered, still with downcast eyes,
"I think... I want to visit the legendary Elf Kingdom and... that Holy Mountain?
In the past, I’ve heard countless people mention it, ah, it’s truly a place to long for, isn’t it?"
Mira listened and nodded, that wasn’t an excessive request.
If Anos had expressed a desire to return to Danschel or the city beneath, Mira would not have agreed.
"What else? What else do you want?"
Mira continued asking.
Anos thought for a moment, then asked with a smile,
"A crown?
I would like a crown, preferably Danschel’s crimson crown."
Upon hearing this, Mira intently stared at the Princess before her.
The Princess softly explained,
"I only want the crown, not Danschel.
Whether it’s genuine or a replica, that crown is something I absolutely must have had in the first half of my life."
Hearing this, Mira nodded.
She would certainly fulfill this small wish of Anos’s.
Anos, unhurriedly, pulled up the car window and smiled,
"After all... the old life has died, and a new life must begin."
"Exactly."
Mira nodded.
Seeing Mira so earnest, for some reason, Anos felt somewhat expectant.
What was she looking forward to?
Following her meant neither the power she had longed for nor the family she was sworn to protect until death.
Her entire first half of life had been lived for power and for the Delos Family, carrying the expectations her parents had placed upon her shoulders.
The family had nurtured her, trained her, and prepared the position of Family Head for her, along with the inevitable King’s Throne.
That was why she lived for her family, and whatever she did, it was for the sake of the family.
Now, by leaving with Mira, she was undoubtedly betraying her family.
"Perhaps... it doesn’t count as betrayal."
Anos muttered.
She had done all she could, she was powerless against Mira, it was Mira who forced her to leave, it wasn’t her own will.
According to the laws of the Empire, if someone forced to commit evil does not commit a major crime such as murder, they would not be charged with a crime.
Thinking this, the Princess breathed a sigh of relief.
Then... I will just leave like this.
Suddenly...
The carriage came to an abrupt stop.
It came to such a sudden halt that the two women inside were nearly thrown out.
"What’s going on?"
Mira asked, abruptly pulling back the curtain of the carriage.
Just then, they saw a male figure standing not far ahead on the barren ground, shrouded in a swirling mist of purple-black.
Old Believer Parker was trembling all over, his complexion pale as though he had seen a ghost.
He spoke in an extremely astonished tone,
"...Gatekeeper?!
Why is the Gatekeeper here?!"
Parker’s startled words echoed in their ears.
Mira quickly realized something.
The Gatekeeper, could it be...
The god of lies and deceit, Slaier?!
She looked at the man standing in the distance, surrounded by the swirling purple-black mist, which undoubtedly represented the divine power of lies and deceit.
"Envoy... why, why is the Gatekeeper here? Is this, is this God’s arrangement?"
Parker asked tremblingly,
"Gatekeeper... I remember, the Gatekeeper only hunts those... those who betray the Primordial Church."
