Chapter 54: Chapter 54 - Get her replacement

Joanna remained calm throughout the situation. The fact that Alex had not even tasted the food indicated that the issue lay with the presentation.

"Why? Is it because it doesn’t have all those fancy presentations of a five-star hotel?"

That was typically how the chef presented the meals, but Joanna’s question made Alex suspicious.

Initially, he thought the chef was being lazy or maybe he was sick and Betty had prepared the meal. However, now he suspected that the meal was not made by the chef at all.

"Did you cook?" Alex’s expression was unwelcoming, but Joanna was determined to face the consequences of her actions, understanding why the domestic workers were so afraid of Alex settling in.

"I’m used to cooking, and I enjoy it."

Seeing his expression harden even more, she let out a frustrated sigh. "Alex, I’m your wife, not some robot."

Now Alex was becoming confused about the situation. "What are you talking about?" It seemed Joanna was not grasping the concept of their contract marriage. "Everyone, get out," Alex yelled.

Everyone left the room, including Betty, and the atmosphere tensed up. Joanna was almost in tears, not expecting this reaction from him.

"Look, I appreciate that you have people waiting on me all the time, but I should be allowed to do what I want, like fix my own drink or cook if I want to. If I want to use the maids, I would, but allow me to do the things I want to do," Joanna expressed.

Alex acknowledged her point but drew the line at her tampering with his meals.

The presentation of the food reminded him of someone dear to him, evoking memories that made him yearn to travel back in time.

"Fine, fix yours, but don’t cook for me," Alex stated firmly.

A tear slipped down Joanna’s cheek, but she quickly wiped it away before Alex noticed. "Why?" she asked, her voice trembling.

He was so agitated that it began to scare her. All she wanted was to be helpful, but Alex felt she lacked respect for boundaries.

"Because this is just a contract. Stick to the rules, and we shall be fine," Alex asserted as he helped himself into his wheelchair, leaving the food untouched.

"You didn’t even taste the food," Joanna pointed out, feeling a pang of regret as she saw his reaction to her mention of the food.

"It’s not appealing enough. I’ve lost my appetite," he remarked without even looking at her, disregarding her feelings. Tears welled up in Joanna’s eyes as Alex wheeled himself away.

Their exchange had already dampened Joanna’s appetite, but things took a turn for the worse when Alex called for the housekeeper, as he reached the entrance. "Betty."

The middle-aged woman appeared promptly to face his stern warning.

"Betty," Alex addressed her with a serious tone, "If something like this happens again, you’ll be receiving your final paycheck."

As the one in charge, Betty knew she would bear the consequences if anything went wrong but surprisingly, she showed no remorse this time, knowing that Joanna’s intentions were genuine. "

"Sir, Madam put in a lot of effort. You should have at least tasted the food," she pointed out.

Alex’s gaze darkened dangerously as he called out to Ike, his rage bubbling inside. Ike, who was waiting to take him to the office, entered as Alex instructed,

"Arrange for Betty’s last paycheck and find her replacement."

The color drained from Betty’s face. This was unexpected and trivial. Alex had always been like a son to her since she began her job at the old King’s mansion as a nanny to both Alex and Logan.

When Alex needed a housekeeper, she was the first person he trusted to handle it, including recruiting the other domestic staff.

"Sir, it won’t happen again," she said apologetically, but Alex’s mind was already made up.

"Too late for that," he said coldly, adding, "the chef is fired too."

Betty felt guilty, not for herself but for the chef. Her loosening of the rules had gotten the chef into trouble.

She stared at Joanna, who remained calm as Alex made his final statement. "I don’t want to see the two of you when I return tonight."

He wheeled himself out of the house with Ike’s assistance, leaving Joanna seated at the dining table, feeling like she was in a dream.

The morning that was supposed to be beautiful turned out to be the ugliest she had ever experienced.

Perhaps she shouldn’t have requested for Alex to spend the night or interfere with his personal life. After all, it was just a contract, so why did she think she could have more?

"Betty," she called out, and the middle-aged woman rushed to her with tears in her eyes. Joanna smiled and asked, "Do you have family nearby?"

"Yes, but the chef doesn’t," Betty replied.

Joanna remained calm and inquired, "Can he stay with you for a while? I promise you’ll have your jobs back by tomorrow."

Betty, feeling overwhelmed, agreed, "Alright. I’ll provide him a place to stay until I hear from you."

Joanna nodded and headed to the office. Alex was still upset during his journey, but the workload kept him occupied, pushing the incident to the back of his mind.

It wasn’t until Aiden arrived with some reports that he noticed Alex’s demeanor.

"You look like an iceberg. What’s wrong with you?" Aiden asked.

Alex checked the time and realized it was almost lunchtime. He was about to ask Betty to inform the chef to send Joanna lunch when he remembered they had been fired.

Frustrated and not the kind of person to go against his own words, he ignored Aiden’s question and turned to Edmund, "Eddy, order food and personally deliver it to my wife, with any leftovers going to Jack."

Edmund was taken aback by the request but complied, wondering what had happened to the professional delivery services.

"Understood, sir."

He went to do as told as Alex responded to Aiden. "What’s going on with the goods?"

Aiden began to report on everything going on in the shipping company, a subsidiary of the King’s multinational corporation. Just then, Alex received a call from Edmund.

"Sir, your wife gave the food to her bodyguard and her coworkers. She didn’t eat any of it," Edmund informed him.

Alex clenched his fists in frustration. Why did women always act this way? He dialed his wife’s number, anticipating more trouble ahead.
