Chapter 53: Chapter 53 – He doesn’t have to know

About thirty minutes ago, Joanna was ready for work. Due to the long sleep last night because of the sedative, she only had to catch up from where she left off.

Waking, up, she felt rejuvenated as she prepared herself for work. Also, it was a very good time to catch up on where she left off in the office at the time she dozed off.

Meeting Alex’s extended family was now out of the way and what mattered now was focusing on meeting her target to get back not only her mother’s shares but the company as well.

As she descended the stairs, it was still early, and the chef had not yet started cooking, which worked in her favor.

She could leave without Betty insisting she have breakfast. However, as she reached the door, it opened before her hand touched it.

"Good morning, ma’am, are you ready for work?" Jack asked politely, avoiding her gaze.

He was dressed in his usual black suit, looking brilliant. Joanna was glad her trick worked when they arrived hours ago and Alex had not sent Jack away as planned

If she had showed any form of care for the bodyguard, that would have pissed Alex off so Joanna was slowly beginning to understand Alex, predicting his moves as well.

To Jack, his boss was so possessive of his wife that he would fire anyone who looked at her twice. As such, he acted professionally.

Before Joanna could answer, the annoying woman she was trying to avoid spoke up from behind her.

"I had no idea she would leave so early. I will wake the chef to make her a quick breakfast. Sir might want some too," she said, addressing Jack but directing her words at Joanna.

Though annoyed that Betty had caught up to her, Joanna was strangely excited to hear that Alex had spent the night at home, wondering if it was because of her earlier request. If so, then it was a good thing, right?

It was not appropriate for them to live like enemies.

An idea popped into her mind, and she stopped Betty. "You know what, I’ll make breakfast myself."

Betty stared at her as if she had grown two horns. "Impossible. I will get fired if sir hears about it."

Joanna felt uncomfortable hearing about someone getting fired all the time, especially during her stay at the mansion.

Living with just her mom had always been filled with love, freedom, and peace, but in this new environment, everything felt like a military zone.

"He doesn’t have to know. Just ten minutes, and I will be out of the kitchen," she assured Betty, but the middle-aged woman was reluctant to grant her request, treating her more like a guest than the mistress of the house.

"I’m sorry, but how can I allow the queen to cook? Please, no. I will get the chef to do it," Betty stated firmly, turned around, and headed to the domestic workers’ lounge.

"Wait, Betty," Joanna rushed after her, blocking her path and inquiring, "Have you not noticed that Alex doesn’t eat much?"

Betty’s face showed a mix of guilt and confusion. "That’s just how he is. Ever since..." She paused, hinting at something troubling with Alex.

"Ever since what?" Joanna pressed, her curiosity evident, but Betty remained silent.

"I’m sorry. We are not allowed to disclose such information."

A bitter smile tugged at the corners of Joanna’s lips. This place didn’t feel like home. It seemed like everyone knew something she didn’t.

"Fine, don’t tell me. But if you care about him and are concerned, let me try, okay?"

She remembered how Logan used to enjoy her cooking and believed Alex would too.

Logan never appreciated it until he tasted and liked it. That must be one of the reasons why he kept her, but since it was over between them, she knew Logan would never find a homely girl like her.

All those rich girls he put above her loved to eat in expensive restaurants, but Joanna learned from her mother that a good home-cooked meal would brighten any man’s mood, and Alex was no exception.

"Then you have to be fast, and he mustn’t know that you made it," Betty instructed.

Joanna smiled with gratitude. "Just ten minutes. Get me the apron and the ingredients I’m about to mention."

Betty agreed but was nervous throughout the process. However, Joanna kept her word.

In less than ten minutes, she prepared classic omelets with eggs, butter, mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes, serving them with a side of veggies.

She had a little extra for Betty and Jack, who she made eat in the kitchen so she could get their first reviews.

"Our chef is a brilliant cook, but this feels so homely, like my grandma’s cooking," Betty complimented, hinting at something.

Joanna smiled and replied, "My mom taught me how to make it."

Betty shook her head, realizing that Joanna didn’t grasp her point.

"You don’t understand. I’ve had this recipe before, but what makes this one special is a very unique ingredient."

Joanna’s eyes narrowed as she gave Betty a questioning look. "And what is that?" she asked.

"You. You put your heart into it," Betty replied.

Joanna chuckled. "Thanks, Betty, but I don’t want to get you into trouble, so Alex must not know."

She swiftly removed the apron and arranged the food on the dining table. It was a quick meal, so she hadn’t even taken off her stilettos.

Alex had already showered and changed before emerging. Due to his condition, he had his daily necessities in both the master bedroom and the bedroom downstairs.

With a beautiful smile and a sweet voice, Joanna welcomed him to the dining table. "Alex, I’ve been waiting for about five minutes now."

Alex was surprised to see her all ready for work, wheeling himself to the dining table before helping himself to a chair. However, one look at the food made it clear that it was not made by his chef.

"What is this? Who made it?" The scowl on his face put Betty on edge.
