Chapter 55: Chapter 55 – Unexpected invitation

Joanna was the first to arrive at the office, but strangely, Mia did not show up today. Joanna did not bother to check on her, only welcoming her friends who arrived later at the office.

"Joan, we can finally breathe since Mia isn’t here today," Vida sighed, excitement lacing her voice. Joanna laughed.

"I know, right? What have you been up to with your targets?" She casually asked.

Whenever Mia was around, none of them spoke much, whether about work or personal matters, acting mute most of the time. But with Mia being away, the atmosphere was much lighter.

"We are on it, but right now, I’m envying Jeremy," Juliet said honestly.

Who would have believed that after being fired, Jeremy was going to have a bigger position in a multinational company?

The shock was still too much for them to comprehend, but it was true. Jeremy had even sent them pictures of his new office.

Joanna smiled. Her close work colleagues had no idea that very soon, this company was going to be hers.

The other departments posed the greatest challenge because she was not well acquainted with them.

What made her popular in the company was the fact that she continuously won the Employee of the Month award.

Most of the workers were more familiar with her than she was with them.

"Just work hard. Who knows? Something wonderful might happen," she hinted, her close friends unaware of the extent of her connections but subtly trusting her.

The assurance that good things came to those who supported her and bad things to those who crossed her was comforting.

"I trust you, but are you really going to introduce Mia to your clients?" Julliet asked disapprovingly, prompting Joanna to laugh again.

She was trying to conceal her earlier anger with Alex, masking it with forced laughter.

"Maybe in her dreams. I’m scheduling my meetings today and might not be in tomorrow. I’ll meet them directly at their offices. Mia will only see copies of closed deals. The original documents will be accessed on the server, where she can’t tamper with them."

The only positive aspect of working for the Bakers was data protection. Not even the CEO could access staff data without permission.

"You’re so clever. How could someone like Mia become CEO?" Vida questioned, sensing inconsistencies in the situation.

Unable to contain herself any longer, Joanna decided today was the perfect time to share the news, especially with the wedding approaching.

"By the way, I’m inviting both of you to my wedding. You mustn’t miss it for anything."

The expressions of shock on their faces were intriguing. Despite being aware of Logan, they had no clue that the relationship had progressed to marriage.

"Wedding? Who’s the lucky guy? Is it Logan?" Julliet inquired, but Joanna shook her head, still hesitant to disclose Alex’s identity.

"No, Logan and I broke up a little over a week ago," Joanna revealed.

Since she had been fired by then, they couldn’t blame her for keeping it from them, especially with Mia’s sudden appearance upon her return, acting suspiciously.

"So, who is it? Were you two-timing?" Juliet asked, feeling disappointed at the thought of Joanna cheating on Logan but was relieved by Joanna’s response.

"No, I guess good things come to those who wait." Joanna’s smile was priceless, momentarily pushing aside all the issues at home before her departure, except for Betty and the chef.

Joanna planned to find a way to reinstate their jobs, and the opportunity presented itself perfectly.

They worked in silence thereafter, losing track of time until a knock on the door interrupted them.

An unfamiliar face entered. "I’m Edmund. May I speak to you for a moment, Joanna?" he asked, aware that his boss’s marriage to Joanna had not been made public yet.

Out of politeness, Joanna went to hear him out. "I am Mr. King’s personal assistant. He asked me to deliver lunch to you," Edmund explained, handing her the package. She smiled and accepted it.

"Thank you," Joanna replied gratefully.

There was something about her that made Edmund linger around after leaving the office, perhaps due to his usual ethic of ensuring perfection in his tasks.

He wanted to make sure Joanna had eaten before leaving and was attentive to her chats with her colleagues.

"Who treated you to such an expensive lunch?" Vida asked, echoing Juliet’s thoughts as she nodded in agreement.

Joanna chuckled, suspecting that Alex had sent the lunch as a gesture following yesterday’s events.

This would have earned her gratitude if not for the actions that morning.

"You two go ahead and eat. I’m not hungry," she said, gesturing to the abundance of food on the table before calling for her bodyguard.

"Jack." Jack appeared promptly. "Yes, ma’am?"

Joanna handed him the extra dish and said, "This is for you."

Jack was surprised and asked, "Ma’am, aren’t you going to eat? You didn’t have breakfast."

Despite feeling hungry, Joanna thought about Betty and the chef and decided to give up the food, even though she didn’t plan to order more. "I’m not hungry."

Just then, her phone rang, diverting her attention from Jack. "Hey Violet, what’s up?" She asked casually, noticing Violet’s somber tone.

"Joan, can we talk?"

"Now?" Joan asked, concerned for her friend. Violet had always been cheerful since Joanna had known her, so this change in mood was unusual.

"No, after work," Violet replied. Joanna was relieved. With Mia absent today, she needed to handle things she didn’t want Mia to see.

"Sure. Where should we meet?"

"There is a restaurant near your office," Violet mentioned. Joanna was pleased that it was nearby, allowing her to leave early and rest for the next day.

"I’m in."

After hanging up, she resumed her work. Edmund shook his head and called Alex on the phone.

Sir, your wife gave the food to her bodyguard and coworkers instead of eating it herself."

Frustrated, Alex clenched his fists. Why did women always do this? He immediately dialed Joanna’s number, bracing himself for more trouble.

When Joanna saw Alex’s call, she answered casually, "How can I assist you, sir?"

Alex, trying to contain his anger, asked, "You didn’t eat the food. Why?" Joanna’s response pushed him over the edge.
