"I don’t handle HR matters," Alex replied nonchalantly.

How could he convey to her that despite Jeremy standing up for her, he was uncomfortable with their closeness?

Joanna, not naive, was determined not to let the issue go and pressed on.

"You transferred Colton, and now Jeremy has been promoted. What’s your angle?"

She was not going to take it lightly, pondering how many other men might be affected by her actions.

"He was fired from the Bakers and was qualified for the position the Kings offered. How is that a problem?" He was getting agitated, signaling for Ike to drive.

"I thought you didn’t handle HR matters?" Joanna continued to press him as Ike drove, making Alex slightly nervous.

"Well, I just hacked into the company server because you mentioned it. Plus, I made it clear that no man should be close to you until the contract was over. It would be best for these men to stay away from you, or they will face either my good or bad side."

Joana shook her head, silenced by his response and unable to continue the argument.

She couldn’t understand how a man could be so possessive in a contract marriage.

Was he insecure because of his disability? Alex’s strange ego left her wondering what the coming months would be like.

"Are you planning to stay at the house tonight?" she asked, noticing the time was already morning.

If he insisted on leaving, she might just follow him as a retort, having slept a lot already due to the sleeping pills. His casual response surprised her.

"Do you want me to stay over?" His tone was unusually relaxed but Joana, was trying not to appear desperate, approaching the situation from a practical angle.

"It’s already 2 am, and you don’t seem to sleep much. Are you even human?"

Alex forced a smile. How could he explain his sleep and eating disorder to her? It was taking a toll on his health, but no doctor could find a solution.

The answer may lie with the woman, and he might be able to regain himself if he finds her.

Upon arriving at the mansion, Joanna was surprised to see Jack waiting for her.

"Excuse me, ma’am, how are you feeling?" Jack inquired.

Joanna smiled and replied, "I should be asking how you are feeling. I had no idea the food was spiked, but I’m glad you’re okay."

"Jack, you will be reassigned. I will find another bodyguard for my wife," Alex stated coldly, reminding Jack of his error.

He knew he should never get emotional or personal. Apologies should go through Alex, and seeing Jack and Joanna getting along meant he had to be replaced.

"I deeply apologize, boss. I should have informed you. Please forgive me," Jack pleaded.

Jack had received a double pay raise when he was transferred to be Joanna’s bodyguard, so going back meant losing that hundred percent bonus.

Joanna was about to speak up for Jack, but remembering Alex’s earlier statement about her influence on men leading to either rewards or punishments, she carefully chose her words,

"He’s right, Jack. It might be best for you to find another job. Your loyalty to him is too strong anyway."

Alex recalled overhearing Jack’s initial conversation with Joanna, where he had refused to answer her questions. This must have been what she meant by Jack’s excessive loyalty.

As Joanna entered the mansion, Alex turned to Jack and issued a final warning,

"This is your last chance. All your interactions must be formal, and you must report any man you see around her."

"Yes, sir, I assure you I won’t disappoint. However, I did some research on the pizza delivery guy after obtaining his identity, but he has already left the country," Jack informed.

Regardless of the country, Alex was determined to track him down. "Do we know which country he fled to?" he inquired.

Jack shook his head. "That’s the issue. He used the subway, making it difficult to trace his whereabouts."

Alex considered using the pizza guy’s identity to locate him, but Jack had more information.

"I’ve shared his identity with our team, but they haven’t been able to locate him. He may have obtained a new passport, and surprisingly, he doesn’t have any family here," Jack added.

This felt like a wild goose chase, and the pizza guy seemed to have played his cards well, being the kind of people Alex loved to work with.

"Whoever hired him won’t stop trying to harm my wife. I suspect Mia, so keep a close watch on her. Also, you need to taste everything she eats first," Alex instructed. Jack nodded in agreement.

"I already had that in mind, but I was worried she wouldn’t allow me," Jack replied.

"I’ll inform her, but do me a favor and install some secret cameras in the Baker’s VIP car park. No one should know about it except you and me," Alex added.

"I’ll take care of that before the workers start reporting. I’ll have to avoid their security, though," Jack assured.

When Alex entered the house, Joanna had already gone to bed, and Betty was locking the doors. "Sorry, sir, I didn’t know you were coming in," Betty apologized.

Alex nodded before wheeling himself to one of the downstairs bedrooms. He wasn’t planning to stay long, so there was no need to go upstairs.

A few hours later when he woke up to give instructions to the chef, he was surprised by what awaited him.
