Chapter 49: Chapter 49 – Don’t be nervous

Given the way the extended family members, including his direct brother, pressured him when Joanna had not arrived, Alex was determined to get back at them.

"Since we have all been waiting for my wife, can you serve our food now? You could all watch us eat, just as I watched you do the same."

It was almost midnight, and they were rounding up on the wedding arrangements, but now they had to wait until whatever time Alex and his wife would finish their meals. Their expressions were not welcoming.

That was a sure sign of disrespect the elders could not take. "Alex," Uncle Dean was about to say something, but Alex shushed him, being in a good mood due to Joanna’s timely arrival.

"Come on, Uncle Dean, you were so concerned about me a while ago, and I made it clear that I will eat only after my wife gets here."

His polite way of exposing the middle-aged man’s hypocrisy left no room for a no. If Uncle Dean refused, then it would mean his care for Alex in the beginning was faked.

"Bring their food," he ordered, and delicacies soon filled the large dining table. With all of them having eaten to their fill, their appetite was gone, forcing them to enjoy their snacks or have some wine while watching the couple eat in their most lovey-dovey ways.

Alex picked up an empty plate and began to fill it with Joanna’s favorites before placing it before her.

"Thank you," Joanna smiled, moved by his gesture. Then she observed the food he filled his plate with, taking note of the things he liked.

"Take your time to eat. I waited patiently for them to have theirs," Alex said, loud enough for everyone at the table to hear.

Logan’s blood was boiling when he saw the display of affection between them. There was soup in the corner of Joanna’s lips, but before her hand could reach the napkin, Alex reached out, picked it up, and dabbed gently at the corner of her lips.

"Don’t be nervous," he said lovingly. Joanna was slightly uneasy with the closeness and the scent of his cologne.

Ever since Alex’s identity was made bare to her, she noticed how his dressing changed, giving him that domineering look.

Alex took the cutlery from her and began to feed her. Logan could not take it anymore. "I admit that my brother takes good care of you. No wonder you don’t care that he’s crippled."

Joanna smiled and took her time to swallow what she had in her mouth before responding to his comment. "I’m glad you made the analysis. A man with two legs who eats everything that catches the eye is just a goat to me."

The sound of laughter echoed around the table, with most people not expecting her to be funny, but she was sending a message, and the receiver clearly understood.

Joanna expected Logan to be upset, but strangely, he smiled. Despite everything, he was afraid of offending Alex, especially when his accusations would no longer fetch him any support.

"If I was a goat, then I would have eaten you too," he pointed out jokingly, but the family members were slowly guessing that whatever was between the two was greater than met the eye.

Joanna’s expression was blank as she spoke in a warning tone. "Don’t let us go back to that topic. I had my standards, and you never met them."

Ruby was so attentive to the conversation but was disappointed that Logan never even looked at her ever since Joanna arrived.

He also did not realize how much of a fool he was making of himself by bantering words with Joanna, who had lost her appetite for the meal and focused her attention on him.

Alex was still not eating much, but she had gotten accustomed to his style of eating. "What were those standards?" Logan asked. Joanna smiled and responded.

"Not putting a ring on my finger."

"I see my brother didn’t either," he pointed out. Alex wore a ring, but Joanna didn’t. She explained as that wasn’t something she was ashamed of.

"But he gave me a marriage certificate, which is stronger than a ring, wedding, or whatever reason it is we are here."

Now Agnes’s interest in the conversation piqued as she asked, "Logan, I thought you two were just friends?"

"Yes, that is what we were, friends," Joanna taunted with a smile. Not having been there to know what transpired, she was not offended for having been introduced earlier as his friend.

Do friends get intimate? They were intimate a few times, except that they never did the main thing, so that was part of her annoyance.

"Since you two already chose a wedding planner, we shall choose the honeymoon location, and you can’t refuse that," Agnes’s voice cut through after gathering some momentum from the revelation of Logan having a past with Joanna.

If she secretly installed cameras in the hotel room, then they would know for sure if Alex and Joanna had a deep relationship like they were conveying.

Agnes could not help but feel something off with this whole arrangement.

"You can’t do that," Joanna quickly countered. Alex forced a smile.

Not having Agnes plan the wedding like the family always did, taking her out of the honeymoon would raise brows and make them suspicious.

"It’s alright, honey. We can have another honeymoon at your preferred location after that," he said softly. Joanna discerned there was more to Alex allowing something like that to happen and kept mute.

"Is there anything else?" Uncle Dean asked. The rest of the relatives shook their heads, but Agnes still had something to say.

"We shall need the contact of your wedding planner. We need to work together because the family members’ attendance will still be organized by us."

The corner of Alex’s lips lifted into a smirk as he removed something from his blazer pocket, dropping it on the table. "This is her contact." It was a business card.

"Then we have to schedule a meeting with the Bakers too," she proposed further. Alex refused this time when he saw the discomfort on Joanna’s face.

"No need. Her mother is not well, so I’m her only family."

Everyone was stunned for a moment as one of the elders, Nick, who had not spoken all through, asked, "Who will walk her down the aisle?"

"Her mother. She will be fine by then."

"What about her father?" Nick asked again. Alex answered. "They aren’t on good terms."

Suspicion clouded their expressions as Nick’s wife asked, "Wait, is she the illegitimate daughter?"

Before Alex could answer, Joanna took the words from his mouth. "What if I am?"

"Then she couldn’t be Adelaide, right? Isn’t the legitimate daughter Mia?" Rita asked, happy that Joanna was nothing after all and undeserving of her distant cousin, Alex.

Her best friend would be a much better fit, but Alex’s response destroyed her hopes.

"That was what Grandpa thought because he never met Mia in person until our first meeting. He confirmed that Joanna was the Adelaide he meant."

"I advise that you should be careful. Her mother had two men in her life, and her daughter here, has already been with both brothers," Agnes said with an evil smile, but that was when things began to take a different turn...
