Chapter 48: Chapter 48 – I never knew the Baker girl was such a stun

A few minutes ago, Joanna woke up dazed in the back seat of a familiar car she knew was not hers, wondering how she had been transferred there. The last thing she remembered was feeling sleepy after eating pizza.

"Jack, where am I?" She asked, met with the sound of an unexpected voice.

"Ma’am, we are at one of the King family mansions," Ike answered, glad to see her awake. All his worries about those elders making things difficult for his boss slowly dissipated.

"What happened?" Joanna asked, still checking her environment, as confusion roamed her mind.

"Sir found you asleep in the office and brought you here. Jack is with the doctor."

Joanna panicked at the explanation. "Why?" She recalled eating pizza, and that was all, so what exactly happened to Jack? She was worried.

Ike tried to calm her from where he sat in the driver’s seat. "He was found sleeping too, the doctor confirmed from the leftovers that the food you both ate was laced with sedatives."

Joanna felt a strange tremor of fear buzzing through her. She was glad it was just sleeping pills, but it could have been anything else, something harmful to her health. "What? By who?"

She could not wrap her head around whoever was trying to make things difficult for her. That should have been Mia, but the bitch ate the pizza with her.

"Sir is yet to find out," Ike answered. Joanna thought carefully and asked again.

"Where is he? Did you see Mia? Was she also asleep?" If Mia did not have the same effect, then she could be the one behind it, right?

"He’s been there for almost three hours now," Alex pointed at the steel security doors ahead from where they were parked in the compound parking lot. "As for Mia, she was also found in the same state as you."

Joanna recalled her role in this arrangement, pushing her thoughts aside for the moment. "Oh no. I have to be there."

She was about to open the door, but Ike hesitated a little before alerting her. "I think you should do something about your hair. It’s messed up."

Those hypocritical family members might give her trouble if she appears before them with her hair disheveled.

"Thanks for alerting me."

Joanna brought out her makeup kit from her handbag to touch up a little on her makeup and hair. "Is it okay if I go by myself?" She asked after gaining satisfaction with her looks. Ike thought carefully and advised.

"I’ll advise that you call him first." Not knowing exactly how things were going in there, no one could tell the excuse Alex had given so far.

Joanna removed her phone from her handbag to see a missed call just about five minutes ago. "He called my phone."

She quickly pressed his number, and he answered on the second ring. "Alex, I’m so sorry. Is it too late?" She asked, feeling guilty.

"I’ll come and get you." Was the only thing she heard before the phone died.

"He said he’ll come and get me," Joanna relayed. Having worked with Alex for close to a decade, Ike knew him and his family better than Joanna.

"From what I know about those meetings, they will deem it disrespectful if he leaves the table."

Alex must have forgotten, but Ike hadn’t. This was the reason he was Alex’s driver and bodyguard, knowing as much as Edmund knew about Alex in the office.

"Then I will go meet him."

"Let me escort you, just in case. Sir would not forgive me if anything happens to you."

Joanna did not refuse since she was not conversant with this part of the Kings family. At the entrance, they could hear enraged voices.

"If you leave the table, then you don’t regard us. Your wife is late. The least she can do is walk in here and apologize, not you giving her a queenly welcome."

Joanna stared at Ike and smiled assuringly. "I will take it from here." Ike nodded but waited at the entrance, just in case.

Joanna took deep breaths before pushing the door open with her head held high, all gazes focused on her, and Logan’s expression turned ashen.

How foolish of him to have believed Mia, and now he failed once more against Alex. Logan felt like he was seeing Joanna for the first time when it had not been long since that meeting.

She rocked her designer office outfits so perfectly, giving her the look of a highly prominent woman. Alex had indeed done beyond Logan’s expectations, making him understand that a woman’s beauty could be enhanced in so many ways.

The same woman who used to pester him in those cheap clothes suddenly turned into a sophisticated one, just like the man she was with.

"I’m so sorry I’m late. I had an emergency."

Logan could see how everyone in the room hung on Joanna’s soft words as she strode gracefully with one destination in mind and not making any eye contact.

Joanna quickly spotted Alex and the empty chair beside him, trying her best to overlook the curious gaze on her.

Alex had a relieved smile on his face. Not only had the sedative cleared from Joanna’s system, but she also looked fresh. It warmed his heart that she took the initiative to touch up on her makeup to not look as if she had just woken up from sleep.

What amazed him was the way Joanna hugged him from behind. It felt strange but came out so naturally that he patted her hand comfortingly before guiding her to her chair.

Alex did not know why, but it seemed to him that for their contract to remain as planned, bodily contact should be avoided. But then, the blame landed on him, having been the first to make her sit on his lap three times in a row.

Joanna sat facing Ruby, and Rita’s head was lowered all through. "I never knew the Baker girl was such a stun," one of the family members commented. Joanna smiled but did not utter a word.

However, Alex’s next words stunned everyone at the table.
