Chapter 92: Treatment and tears
Due to Coco being wounded, she was sent back to her room in the Red Horse Inn early.
"Look, it was just a scratch, I’m fine!" Coco said, trying to assure Jacques and Mrs. Tani for the nth time that evening, watching their every move as they walk around her room.
First of all, she invited the two of them inside out of courtesy, but didn’t actually think they would come inside.
They forced her to take a bath— no, they didn’t take a bath with her, they waited for her to be done before dragging her back to her room and tended to her wounds.
It was strange.
Coco didn’t actually think that the two women would be tending to her just because she was bleeding from the scratches she received from the flying pig’s sharp feathers.
Well, she somehow expected it from Jacques, but Mrs. Tani? Mrs. Tani is only her business partner.
The merchant asked her to be one of her producers and bought the fruits she harvested— yet, Mrs. Tani is scrambling in and out of the room, taking things from the lobby of the inn and bringing it inside of Coco’s room.
"A scratch doesn’t bleed like that, Coco." Jacques said, her voice stern as she dabbed a cotton against Coco’s wound.
Coco grumbled under her breath, her eyebrows furrowed as she flinched, the sting of the liquid that Jacques dipped the cotton in made her want to cuss out everything around her.
"I brought your dinner." Mrs. Tani spoke up as she walked through the door for the nth time, carrying a wooden tray.
"You didn’t have to— ow! Ow! Ow!" Coco hissed, whining and crying as she smacked her pillow repeatedly to channel the pain she was feeling to the pillow instead.
"Just how did you end up like this? You looked fine for the past few days." Jacques asked, her eyebrows furrowed, her eyes focused on the wound on Coco’s ribcage, "This is the first time you turned up in the shop and you swore that you were fine."
Mrs. Tani’s hummed, agreeing with Jacques’ statement as she placed the tray down on the table.
"Being stubborn will lead you to a far worse state than this, Mrs. Hughes." The merchant started, using the matter of fact tone as if she was reprimanding a treasured little sister.
"But I swear in my life that I’m fine— ack! Ow— okay! Okay! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!" Coco cried out, her tears slipping down her cheeks as Jacques pressed the wet cotton with pressure on Coco’s wound, making her cry and bury her face on the bed.
"Why must you be stubborn? I know that you saw how red and soaked your clothes were." The pink woman sighed out as she shook her head, "Those were new, too. Yet, you already stained them with your blood."
"What happened? Why did you get injured?" Mrs. Tani asked, wondering what could be the cause.
Jacques wanted to know as well, just as she had stated earlier, this was the first time she saw Coco arriving at the butcher shop with bloodstained clothes.
Coco always brings back clean monsters— except for the tough crocodile, but the blood didn’t look like hers so they didn’t question her.
It was concerning.
"I brought my first husband with me to the mountain." Coco muttered, her voice slightly muffled due to her face pressed into the mattress, "He wanted to come so I bought him, then he got attacked by the flying pig so I picked him up, ran away, and got scratched in the process."
"This is not a scratch." Jacques said, her voice sharp.
"Well.. Is he injured?" Mrs. Tani inquired.
"Goodness.. I don’t know.. But I hope not." Coco said, her eyebrows furrowed in worry.
It was silent after all and thankfully, Jacques seemed to be done dressing Coco’s wounds, and she let the injured woman know by patting her back gently.
"Thank you." Coco muttered, her lips formed into a tight line.
"You’re welcome." Jacques huffed out and shook her head, "But don’t get used to it. I don’t want to patch you up every time you go out."
"I understand." Coco sniffled, wiping her tears away.
"Does it sting that much?" Mrs. Tani asked, watching as Coco continued to wipe the tears away from her face.
"Not really—" Coco said, but got cut off when a knock echoed inside the room.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Mrs. Tani, Jacques, and Coco exchanged looks, their eyes holding a puzzled look, not expecting for anyone to visit Coco at an ungodly hour.
"Are you expecting a guest?" Mrs. Tani turned to Coco, raising an eyebrow on her way.
"No..? No one knows I sleep here except for you, Renaldo, Jacques, and Joachim— well, the woman by the desk, too." Coco answered, standing up from her bed and walking stiffly towards the door.
"Are you going to open the door?" Jacques blinked at Coco.
"Yes? It’s not like something bad will.." Coco was speaking as she opened the door and slowly trailed off when she saw the fourth husband standing outside in the hallway, looking surprised.
".. Happen?" Coco finished her statement and blinked owlishly towards Quizen, "May I help you? If it’s for the dinner, I’ll have the meat delivered at the house—"
Quizen cut her off by raising a hand and grasping her wrist, the previous astonished expression in his face replaced with something unreadable.
"Why are you hurt?" He asked, his voice dripping with agitation and confusion, "Zaque went home without a scratch and told us that you bought him with you, but you’re hurt? Did you get into a fight at the pub again?"
"What? No, I didn’t fight anyone—"
"Whatever. Zaque wants you to be home so I’m dragging you back home." Quizen had cut her off again and tightened his grip on her wrist.
He was about to drag her out of her room, but Jacques let out a scream.
