Chapter 87: Farming Date Quest [3]

The remaining hours of morning passed by quietly.

True to Coco’s words, watering the crops was proven laborious due to him going back and forth from the riverbank to the plants, filling the bucket with water and giving it to Coco so she could make the water as clear as she could.

They took a quick break to eat the bread Zaque baked and the lunch that Coco brought with her then they went back to work.

So far, the forest has been peaceful, the sounds of birds and the rustle of leaves were the only disturbance in the peace and quiet that surrounds them.

The trees that stood tall and proud around them acted as their barrier, their branches swaying gently in the light breeze and blocking whatever’s lurking in the forest, making it easier for Zaque to work.

However, without warning, the peace was broken by a loud and piercing squeal, the sound shattering the silence like a knife through glass.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!

The source of the sound was unknown, the sound echoing through the trees and filling the air with the sudden note of distress which sent the birds that had been resting in the trees startled, the squeals filling the air as they took to the sky in a hurry.

The mediator, previously going about his business and meticulously doing his assigned task, was now completely still, his body frozen as he waited for the source of the noise to reveal itself.

When it revealed itself, Zaque inhaled sharply.

The flying pig’s wings flapped furiously as it flew towards him, the air filling with the sound of its wings.

He didn’t even know that it was already zooming at him, he could barely see the monster, its speed was alarming, the monstrous animal charging towards him.

He could feel his heart thud in his chest and face paled in shock as he managed to catch a glimpse of the flying pig closing the distance between them in an instant, its form growing larger and more menacing as it drew nearer.

"Zaque!"

Out of nowhere, he was tackled to the side, the force of the impact taking him completely by surprise and making his body hit the ground with a loud thud.

"Agh!" The force of the impact was hard enough that he let out a small cry of pain, his body protesting against the sudden movement with the wind getting knocked out of his lungs.

"Lala! Hold on to me!"

As Zaque had a short chance to catch his breath, he heard a familiar voice calling out to him and the fairy, the sound cutting through the confusion and ear splitting squeals.

"Sorry about this, Zaque!" He heard from his wife before the mediator felt himself being lifted off the ground, his body barely flinching, still reeling from the sudden impact.

Before he could even begin to regain his composure, he found himself being carried away, his body carried by strong arms with the person carrying him breaking into a sprint which made him feel his body bounce with each step, the motion making him cling tighter to his savior.

Zaque’s head spun, his upper limbs flailing as he struggled to make sense of what was happening.

The sound of the person’s footsteps filled his ears, mixing with the squeals and also matching the sound of the rapid beat of his heart.

Zaque risked a glance over his shoulder, his eyes locking on the sight of the flying pig chasing after them.

He could feel the fear and adrenaline pumping through his veins as he watched the flying pig gaining on them, the fear making his heart pound in his chest and press himself further to Coco.

Then, all of a sudden, the flying pig surged forward, its wings extended and its mouth open in a snarl.

Before Zaque could react, the pig squealed so loud that it made Coco flinch and shot out a lot of sharp feathers, the spines whistling through the air with it glinting bright against the sunlight.

The flying pig’s sharp feathers sailed through the air, flying straight towards the mediator and the huffing woman carrying him.

"Watch out, Coco!" Lala cried out, her voice high-pitched with fear.

Coco reacted quickly as soon as she heard the fairy’s warning, her reflexes lightning fast as she dodged the first wave of the sharp feathers.

She swerved to the side, her body dipping and sliding as she tried to avoid the attack of the deadly feathers, barely dodging the attack, her breath caught in her throat.

Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, one of the feathers caught her arm and nicked her side, the sharp edge sinking into her flesh with a sickening squelch before it pierced the ground.

She didn’t cry out, instead, she ignored the pain and she kept her train of thoughts clear, wanting to get them both to safety— continuing to run, her legs only pumped harder as she pushed herself forward.

Despite the close call, Zaque could feel Coco’s grip on him getting tighter, her arm muscles straining with the effort of keeping them both safe.

The mediator, still being carried, could feel the speed of Coco’s running increase, her legs moving with desperation as she tried to put distance between them and the flying pig.

However, the flying pig was relentless, its feathers still flying through the air, its beady eyes focused on its prey while its attacks were quick and seemingly never-ending, the feathers flying fast towards her.

All Coco could do was dodged and dodged, her body moving in a hurry in an attempt of graceful dance of avoidance, her body reacting almost faster than the eye could see.

Though she couldn’t keep it up for long, she could already feel her body starting to grow tired, every dodge and duck seemed to take a toll on her, her breath coming in short gasps as she continued to run.

This is the reason why I don’t want to bring him with me!
