Chapter 86: Farming Date Quest [2]
"Lala!" Coco called out to the fairy, "Come check this out!"
She paused in surprise as she surveyed her little open garden, her eyes were immediately drawn to the rows of lettuce plants growing in neat rows.
The plants were small and tender looking, the leaves a bright green and standing proud in the sunshine.
She was surprised to see that the plants were already ready to harvest, despite having been planted only a week ago, they were already grown this much.
Coco’s eyes widened in disbelief, her shocked expression showing that this was impossible for a plant to mature so quickly.
The green leaves of the lettuce were plump and crisp, the leaves were a deep, dark green, and the heads of the plants were big and round, the edges of the leaves just beginning to fade to a lighter color.
She couldn’t quite believe how quickly they had grown, the sudden speed of their growth taking her by surprise.
"Was this because of my purification mixed with my skill?" Coco mumbled under her breath as she knelt down, her fingers gently touching the leaves of the plants as she admired their rapid growth.
She really couldn’t believe how quickly the vegetable had grown, her eyes still wide with disbelief as she took in the sight of the healthy and ready-to-harvest lettuce.
"What is it, Coco? Are you okay— Gasp! They are all grown! You can sell them now, Coco!" The garden fairy was worried at first because the sound of panic on her human friend’s voice was clear, but when she saw what Coco was looking at, she couldn’t stop the gasp from leaving her lips.
Just thinking about the money they will earn if Coco manages to sell the whole row of lettuce makes her feel giddy!
"Yes.. But it’s weird." Coco said, the hesitation on her face can be seen as she stared at the leafy vegetable, "Is it normal for lettuces to grow this fast without using magic? Oh, wait.. I mean, I’m using magic, but still."
"Do you feel bad?" Lala asked, tilting her head and staring at Coco, "Don’t feel bad. Just think of them growing so big in a week because you gave them so much of your love."
"Well.. If you say so." Coco murmured, sighing heavily as she shook her head, "Can you fetch the basket? I’ll start harvesting these."
The fairy did as she was told happily, flying over to the basket.
Meanwhile, Zaque stared at Coco from the unfinished house, standing a few feet away, his eyes fixed on her as she tended to her lettuce garden.
His eyes followed her every move, taking in the concentration etched on her face, the way her hands moved gently and softly— the mediator just couldn’t tear his eyes away from her.
Coco, at a safe distance, seemed to glow under the sunlight, her skin illuminated in a warm and radiant glow, her hands, strong and yet still delicately holding the plant, seemed to hold an elegance that was mesmerizing.
Was he exaggerating? He can’t tell, but there was a soft and gentle beauty to her, the way her hair fell in loose waves around her face, the way her eyes sparkled with excitement as she surveyed the garden.
He can’t explain it, even as she bent over the plants, there was a certain allure to her, a certain incomprehensive attractiveness that drew his eyes to her.
His eyes continued to drift over Coco’s form, his gaze taking in her every detail.
Despite the fact that he had known her for years, had seen her wearing different outfits, and witnessed her getting wrecked by alcohol— there was something about her appearance that stood out to him.
Perhaps it was the way the sunlight caught in her hair? Or the way her eyes sparkled with excitement and hesitancy as she looked over the plants? Or maybe it’s the way a small smile emerged in her lips? He really can’t explain.
There’s just something about her that seemed almost.. Beautiful. All he knows is that he couldn’t tear his eyes away from her, the sight of her making his heart skip a beat.
It was strange, really.
There shouldn’t be something about the way she looked that could have caught his attention, she was just crouching down in the dirt, touching the delicate and healthy green leaf vegetable so gently, her fingers tracing the shimmering leaves with tenderness.
As if that wasn’t enough to make him act differently.
His heart squeezed slightly, skipping a beat as another sunlight caught in her hair, but this time, the light caught the strands and illuminated them in a way that made them shine with a golden glow.
Before he could stare any longer at the oblivious woman in the distance, a certain sound had snapped him out of his daze.
Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring.
Zaque’s gaze snapped in the direction where the familiar sound was coming from and saw the adorable creature carrying the basket that Coco was carrying earlier.
Knowing that Coco will be harvesting the vegetable, Zaque walked over to her spot.
"Thank you, Lala." Coco expressed her gratitude the moment the fairy dropped the basket beside her, "Was the basket heavy for you?"
Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring.
The response was still a bell ringing for Zaque’s ears.
"Coco." He called out to the woman who was about to dig into the dirt, making her hand freeze mid-air and turn to look at him, "I want to help. What can I do to be useful around here?"
He watched as Coco blinked, the gesture oddly adorable for his eyes.
"Well.. You can water the other crops? Here, I’m already done with this one. Once the bucket is empty, refill it by the river and give it to me." Coco said, pointing at the bucket filled with purified water.
"That’s all..?" Zaque frowned.
Coco nodded her head, "Watering can be laborious work, too, so don’t say that."
He only pursed his lips as a response.
