Chapter 61: Fifty gold coins
"But what is that on your bag, Mrs. Hughes?" Mrs. Tani asked, her eyes glued to the bag where she could see a kiwi peeking through the opening of the bag.
Coco perked up when she remembered why she went to Magia Pierre in the first place, "Oh! I was thinking of selling these fruits to you! Well, if you don’t mind that is— would you like to buy these fresh batches?"
"Make sure she will pay so many gold coins for it, Coco!" The garden fairy squealed, flying all over the place, buzzing with excitement.
"May I see what kind of fruits you brought back this time?" The merchant politely requested to which Coco nodded her head to and pick up the bag and placed it on the table so Mrs. Tani would have to go to the trouble of doing it herself.
The woman before Coco opened the bag to look at the fruits hiding inside.
The first thing she saw was how the oranges looked succulent, sweet, and ripe, not to mention, she was hit with a fragrant citrus scent caused by the peel, making her mouth water and peel one to try the fruit’s freshness.
However, knowing Coco Hughes, she already knows that the fruits are as fresh as they can be.
Her eyes moved to the grapes— the small yet juicy berries with a thin skin and soft, fruity flesh are small and plump. Just looking at it, Mrs. Tani knows that it would be a sweet treat, filled with fruity goodness.
The kiwi, on the other hand, is a small, fuzzy treasure, hiding its sweet and tart treasures beneath its fuzzy coat of skin. Both ripe and plump, its flesh is juicy and refreshing, a delectable surprise for a strange looking fruit.
Mrs. Tani knows that the kiwi already tasted good sold by the other vendors, but it came from Coco Hughes— the fruit she brings back knows no bounds when it comes to freshness and juiciness!
Seeing the look of resistance and hunger on Mrs. Tani’s face, Coco already knew that she bagged another successful business transaction.
"Well? Would you buy it or not? I don’t have time all night, Mrs. Tani." Coco hummed out playfully, making Mrs. Tani flinch in her seat and looks at Coco with furrowed eyebrows.
"Would you accept fifty gold coins for these?" The merchant started with clearing her throat and straighten posture, "No, let me rephrase that, please accept fifty gold coins for these and I’ll lessen the debt you have at the pub of the Red Horse Inn by twenty gold coins, too."
"Oooohhh! Money! We made money!" Lala squealed, flying around Coco’s head out of sheer happiness and relief.
"Just lessen the debt by ten gold coins, I don’t think you’ll be able to keep a business like that if you keep trying to accommodate me." Coco stated, smiling softly at the merchant, "I’ll accept the fifty gold coins."
Coco was glad that the garden fairy was busy giggling to herself about the amount of money she heard or else, she would have been upset if she heard Coco lessen the debt amount.
Coco could have accepted the offer, but she wouldn’t be able to sleep properly at night out of guilt.
Sue her for all she cares! She knows that they are just trying to make money, too, and her, not paying Coco Hughes’s debt might send them to bankruptcy soon.
"I’ll get the gold coins ready." Mrs. Tani said and stood up, leaving the bag of fruits behind and walked towards the other side of the room, pushing the curtain aside and opening a door then disappearing into the other room.
Coco blinked, she didn’t even know that there’s another room for this room.
Man.. Rich people have it going for them, huh.. Coco thought, feeling a little envious, but she was already working hard to get the same luxury as the rich people so she shouldn’t feel envious of them, right?
"We made a lot of money~ so much money~ we have a lot of money~" The garden fairy continued her celebratory cheer, singing on the top of her lungs, her high-pitched voice echoing inside the room as she flew in a circle, making Coco shake her head.
Thankfully, Mrs. Tani had come back from the other room while carrying a medium sized pouch.
"Here’s the gold coins." She informed Coco and handed the pouch to Coco, "You can count it here if you think I might have miscounted, I wouldn’t mind."
"No, it’s alright." Coco assured her and stood up while pointing at the woven bag on the table, "I’ll come back for the bag tomorrow morning, it’s the only bag I have so please give it back to me."
The bag was quite big and Coco liked that fact.
She could bring a lot of fruits back to the village using the said bag and could earn a lot of money, if she has to get another bag, she’s not sure if she would get a bag similar to its size.
Mrs. Tani blinked and said in a matter-of-fact tone, "I could have a sturdier and tougher bag ready for you tomorrow morning along with the basket you asked for."
"Free bag!" Lala exclaimed loudly, making Coco flinch slightly because the fairy was right next to her ear.
"I appreciate that, thank you." Coco said, smiling once more to the merchant, "Well, then, I’ll take my leave— oh, here’s the ten gold coins I owe you from earlier.
Coco opened the pouch and brought out ten gold coins, handing it to Mrs. Tani.
"I almost forgot about that.. I was too occupied at the thought of you being one of my suppliers, do forgive me." Mrs. Tani stated, sighing weakly as she shook her head, feeling disappointed in herself.
"It’s fine." Coco assured her and waved a hand, "I’ll be on my way, I’ll stop by tomorrow morning!"
"Have a safe trip, Mrs. Hughes."
