Chapter 54: Expensive fruit
Sighing weakly, Coco dropped the wooden bucket on the river and filled it to the brim with water.
After the fiasco over the flying pig and almost dying in the waterfall pool, Coco and Lala silently agreed to the terms of going up the mountain to see the vegetables and fruit before going back to the village a couple of hours earlier than their usual time.
So, right now, Coco decided to water the vegetables she planted, having a small sprout already peeking through the patches of soil, demanding for water.
It hasn’t been a week and yet the plants are growing already, the radish, basil, and carrots were already peeking, and no, she wasn’t talking about just a sprout, she could literally see the orange of the carrots and the reddish hue of the radish.
The basils are already five to six inches tall, just a few more inches and they would be good for harvest.
The state of the potatoes are the same as the basils, the only difference is that she could see the potatoes sprouting small flowers.
After emptying out the bucket, she went back to the river for more water for the potatoes, radishes, and basils.
While she was watering the plant, the garden fairy was growing tropical fruits such as kiwis, grapes, dragon fruits, and oranges— she decided to grow just four fruits because her human friend brought only one bag.
Lala is not even sure if she could fit all the fruits inside the bag and she was also not sure if Coco would be able to carry more fruits if she created a basket since Coco still had to carry the dead flying pig laying a few feet away from Coco’s vegetable patches.
The garden fairy let out a troubled sigh, her eyes scanning the area to see what else she could do to help Coco to carry more fruit to bring back to the village.
If Coco manages to bring two bags of fruit back to the village and sells them along with the flying pig, she would be able to earn so much money.
Just thinking of the yellow, shining, sparkling gold coins being counted by her human friend— Lala could already feel her lips curling into a wide smile, unable to stop the giggle from escaping her little.
More fruit is equal to more coins! More coins is equal to Coco buying what she wants and needs! Lala thought with pure glee and delight, her wings flapping furiously behind her that seemed to match her happiness.
She was so happy with the thought of Coco earning a large sum of money that she failed to notice her human friend putting down the bucket beside the unfinished wall of the house and made her way to where the fairy was daydreaming on.
Coco raised an eyebrow when she saw the excited expression and the bright shine of Lala’s face, her eyes sparkling with so much delight.
Well, it’s good that Lala seems to have forgotten what happened earlier for a moment. Coco thought, a small smile on her face as she turned away and walked towards the bag.
It’s better to see her smiling like that than seeing the gloomy look on her face. She added to her previous thought, picking up the bag and making her way to the first fruitful tree— the kiwi tree.
She started picking the kiwis off to its small twigs and thin branches, being careful as to not disturb and damage the other kiwi around it.
She placed all the kiwi inside the bag and was about to place the last kiwi when she realized something was wrong.
Oh, my goodness.. The kiwi will get squashed if I put it at the bottom of the bag. Coco thought as she let out a groan of shame, slowly taking out the kiwis from the bag and placing them on her robe to not get them dirty.
She moved to the nearest tree so she could put them on the bottom and was relieved to see that it was oranges. Citrus fruits have hard skins unlike kiwi which means she can put the orange first.
Coco didn’t waste any time to pick all the round, juicy oranges inside the bag, and as she did so, she started to hum.
The sound of Coco’s humming had brought back Lala to reality from her daydreaming, a gasp escaped the fairy’s throat as she blinked several times and looked around to check where she currently was.
"Coco!" Lala squealed when she saw her human friend putting the kiwi inside the bag with the orange tree and kiwi tree having no fruits getting her attention from the corner of her eyes, "Why didn’t you tell me that you’re done watering the vegetables?"
The fairy flew towards her friend, a small pout forming in her face as she watched Coco get up from her crouching position and lift the bag, smiling at her.
"You looked like you were having fun so I didn’t disturb you." Coco said, walking towards the dragon fruit tree and when she saw the fruit, she blinked, "Oh, wow.. I missed eating these. It was expensive back in my world."
Coco smiled softly, putting the bag down and starting picking the dragon fruit from its tree, her hand barely evading the cacti branches to not prick herself and her hand in the process.
"Oh..!" Lala gasped audibly and placed herself on Coco’s head, peeking down on Coco, "Then I could grow this tree just for you! You don’t have to sell them to other people."
"I appreciate the thought, Lala, I want that, but I also want to see how much it would be worth in this world." Coco said as she laughed, carefully placing the dragon fruit inside the bag, "If we can sell it at a high price then we should sell as much as we can, right?"
"So, I just need to grow dragon fruit for you and sell some, too, to make Coco happy!"
