Chapter 52: Squeals
Chapter 52: Squeals
After the business interaction in Magia Pierre, Coco had excused herself and rushed out of the magic stone shop to go out of the Yogusho Village to go up the mountains to look at the vegetables she planted.
She knows that they might not have sprouted yet, but what are the chances, right?
For all she knows, Lulu might have cast a spell and speed up the cultivation process of the vegetables!
On her way to the mountain, Lala had woken up from her slumber and was confused why her human friend looked like she was having the best time of her life which should not be the case because she was just having a bad time yesterday.
Well, Coco technically was not having a bad time, but for the garden fairy’s eyes, she was.
She wanted to ask what was happening, to know what she missed while she was sleeping, to know what made Coco so excited like a bubbly little girl, but the familiar squeal of a pig echoed in the forest.
"Coco, flying pig coming on the right!" Lala’s high-pitched voice made the black haired woman flinch and froze in her tracks, heart racing from fright.
Coco’s eyes snap to look at the gap of the bag made from woven leaves, her hand shooting up to touch her chest and calm her beating heart, eyes wide in surprise and breath caught in her throat.
She was not expecting Lala to be awake! The adorable fairy almost gave her a heart attack!
"Coco, stop standing there and go after the pig!" Lala exclaimed, her red eyes trained in the direction where the flying pig was last heard, "Hurry! Before it gets away!"
The fairy’s last shout snapped Coco out of her shock and immediately did as she was told.
She sprinted through the thick trees of the forest, her feet pounding against the ground with lightning speed with each step, her heart hammered in her chest, her breathing coming fast and hard.
As she ran, she could hear faint squeals coming from somewhere ahead of her, but the forest was a blur of colour and sound, making it difficult for her to pinpoint where the squeals were coming from.
The leaves rustling in the warm breeze of noon, the branches of the trees swaying in her path, ignoring the branches that slapped her body as she ran, the sound of her breathing— everything was loud in her ears, but she ignored those, her focus entirely on the squeals of the girl dinner.
The trees whizzed past her in a blur, their leaves rustling softly with each passing moment, her body leaping easily over fallen branches and ducking under low-hanging tree limbs.
"To the left, Coco!" Lala said, screaming directions to her human friend, her mind also set on the pig, her grip on the bag tightening as Coco took a sharp turn.
The sound of the squeals grew louder as she ran to the direction Lala pointed, her ears straining to pinpoint their location.
Beneath the sound of the flying pig’s squeals, Coco could just make out the sound of a waterfall, the rushing sound of water cascading down the side of a cliff. The sound was faint, but it was clear that the waterfall was nearby.
The sound of the waterfall told her that she was near where she planted her vegetables. Has she been running that fast to reach the waterfall? Or has she been running for that long for her to reach her unfinished home in a flash?
Coco doesn’t know the answer as the question popped in her mind for a brief moment before deciding to brush it off for now and focus on the pig at hand, continuing to run through the forest, her path taking her away from the waterfall.
SQUEEEEEEE!
She was getting closer to the source of the squeals and could hear them more clearly now, their pitch growing louder with each passing moment.
With a final step forward, she sprinted out of the forest on an opening, her hair dancing wildly in the air and her eyes wide in excitement— the sparkling, clear sight of the pool of the waterfall caught her attention almost immediately with the familiar flying pig on top of it.
The flying pig sure was an extraordinary sight, its pink feather wings flapping furiously behind it as it sped through the air, seemingly curious at the cascading water from the cliff.
Its eyes were a beady red and its sharp toothed mouth was open in a cry that sounded more like a combination of a pig’s squeal and a bird’s call.
"It’s near the waterfall like the other flying pig." Lala gasps out, her voice not louder than a whisper, afraid that the flying pig would hear her and start attacking Coco without her human friend preparing.
"I think they have a fascination with how the water falls down to the bottom." Coco responded, her voice also below a whisper as she placed the bag down on the ground, her footsteps quiet and light, trying not to alert the pig.
"Stay here." Coco whispered to the fairy, her eyes glued to the pig for a moment before she looked away and approached a particularly small tree.
In a quick and powerful motion, she took a stance and she swung her leg back, kicked her leg forward with her foot connecting on the tree with a loud crack.
The blow landed with a thunderous crack, the thick wood of the tree shuddering from the impact, its trunk groaning and creaking as it began to topple, it wavered for a moment, its roots straining to hold it in place, but then it gave way.
As it was crashing down to the ground, Coco lunged forward to catch it before it could create a loud sound.
Coco glanced at the pig to see if it heard the commotion, but when she saw the pig was still occupied with the waterfall, a smile crept into her face.
