Chapter 46: Buying vegetables
With Coco and Lala having their stomachs full, they didn’t have enough energy to have a late night conversation and immediately got knocked out the moment they plopped down on the bed.
Coco was woken up by the sound of bird songs outside of the window and when the sound reached her ears, she stirred in her sleep.
Coco’s eyes slowly fluttered open, revealing a deep green of emerald colored irises from within.
The dim morning light filtering through her room window.
Her body was feeling slightly sluggish, her muscles feeling heavy and uncooperative as she stretched, letting her bones pop back into their sockets and letting her muscles warm from the stretch.
The sheets were tangled around her legs and her long black hair was a disheveled mess, looking like a storm had come in and ransacked her hair.
"I have to check the potatoes, lettuce, radish, carrots, and basil today."She groaned softly, her voice hoarse from dehydration and sleep.
She sat up, pushing the covers off of her body, and almost immediately, the morning chilly air hit her skin, sending a shiver down her spine, making her whine out, "Oh, shit, why is it cold?"
She rubbed her face, her eyes still blurry with sleep as she tried to rub off the lingering sleepiness.
Coco slid her legs out of the tangled sheets and swung her legs over the side of the bed, landing gently on the cool floor.
She stood up, her body still groggy and her movements slow, she shook out her limbs, trying to loosen up her somehow tired and asleep muscles.
With a sigh, she crossed the room, her footsteps heavy with sleep as she reached out, pulling on the pair of loose pants and fitted shirt that she hung on the back of the wooden chair.
Picking up each piece of clothing and putting it on with practiced ease, Coco shook her arms again, waking herself up and shaking off the remnants of her sleepiness.
She had taken a bath before she went up to her room and used the chamomile scented soap as her substitute detergent to wash her clothes.
She made sure to squeeze the pair of clothing before she wore it again. Then, she made sure to lock the door and close the window blinds when she started undressing, hanging the slightly wet clothes on the back of the chair.
Now that the clothes are dry, they smelled like flowers, a pleasant scent for Coco’s nose.
The fabric of her clothes felt a little unfamiliar against her skin, the feel of cotton and linen strange after a night of sleeping in the nude, but it was comfortable and well-worn, fitting snugly against her body.
By the time Coco bent down and pulled on her worn out shoes, she already felt more awake and alert.
"Time to go out and buy something for the husbands to eat." Coco murmured, scooping Lala out of the pillow and placing her gently inside the woven bag.
She placed her tattered robe inside the bag then she placed the garden fairy on it so it would be soft and comfortable for Lala to sleep on.
She looked around the room, her eyes landing momentarily on the unmade bed and the haphazardly placed table on the corner before she looked away and walked out of the room, locking the door with the key she was given.
She walked out of the room, her body refreshed and smelling like fresh flowers.
She left the soap by the table and will come back to get it later once she comes back in the evening, but for now, she will need to go out to buy something for the husbands.
She made her way down the stairs, her eyes scanning the main room of the inn, she saw the woman by the front desk— Nathalie, wiping the wooden surface diligently and efficiently.
She approached the desk, pulled a gold coin from her money pouch and placed the gold coin on the desk, it made a noise which caught Nathalie’s attention and made her look at Coco.
"Please prepare my dinner in advance." Coco said and smiled, "I’ll come back for the change in the evening."
She didn’t wait for the woman to say anything and immediately went out of the inn, the morning sun warmth hitting her face as soon as she stepped outside.
She went to the market, her mind focused on her path as she walked past buildings after buildings.
When she arrived at the market, she was quick to look around for vegetable vendors with cheap prices— she can’t afford anything expensive. She would be happy to give more fruit or vegetables to the husbands, but she doesn’t have any at hand right now.
As she was walking, her eyes scanned the rows of vegetables on the display, some of them looking green and ripe, perfect for cooking.
Without thinking much about it, she approached a female old vendor who had just finished serving a buyer.
"Coco Hughes!" The old woman gasped, a pleased and happy expression settling on her face, "My, my! What can this old woman do for the famous Coco Hughes?"
Coco blinked, confused at the cheery behavior of the old woman, "I just want to buy a kilo of green leaf lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli."
"Sure! Please wait a moment." The old woman said before she scrambled to pick the vegetables Coco said from the display and placed them inside a bag made out of leaves— just like the ones Old Josh gave her.
It wasn’t that long before the old woman finished packing the vegetables and handed Coco the bag, "That would be three hundred silver coins, child."
Coco immediately dug her hands inside the pouch and took out the amount she needed then gave it to the old woman.
Just as she was about to leave the old woman’s vendor, a familiar masculine voice reached her ears.
"What are you doing here, Coco?"
