Chapter 197: Heiren’s quest [2]

Coco walked towards an unfamiliar store, following behind Quizen and Heiren with her gaze flickering over the windows, her eyes glued to the display of spices and seasonings.

The store was small but well stocked, the display racks filled with a variety of spices and seasonings, some familiar and some exotic.

Coco slowed her pace until she stopped, her gaze lingered on the display, her eyes scanning over the colorful spices and seasonings— blinking in wonder what could be the name of everything single spices and seasonings.

She could see some familiar spices such as bags of dried chili peppers, cumin, and turmeric, but that’s about it.

The store’s mixed scents of spices harassed her sense of smell, and she could detect the smells of cinnamon and ginger mixing with the scent of other familiar spices that she often smell back in her world.

Coco walked forward before she passed for a moment once more, drawn in by the vibrant colors of the seasonings on display.

Some of the spices were piled high and arranged in neat jars and bottles, the different colors and textures creating a rainbow of flavors, each one blending together in an intoxicating blend.

Coco silently browsed the display, her fingers tracing lightly over the jars, the tips of her fingers pulling away once she was satisfied.

"Are you interested in cooking?"

Coco’s attention snapped away from the display to look at the person who spoke to her.

"No, not really." Coco answered, forcing a smile as she walked past Quizen to get to the brown haired mediator who was standing by the counter.

The mediator stood by the counter, lining up several spices and seasonings in neat rows.

Heiren carefully lined up several small jars of spices and seasonings on the counter, the jars making a clinking sound as he moved them into place.

He selected a variety of different colors and types, lining them up in a straight line— looking focused, but also content, his fingers moving quickly and efficiently as he gathered the spices and seasonings he wanted.

The different spices and seasonings were arrayed in front of him, their colors mixing together in a mesmerizing display.

Coco watched with a small smile as Heiren looked at the jars with excitement, his fingers caressing each lid with gentleness while smiling gleefully.

The smile he has reminds her of the smile of her mother.

Cleora loved cooking for her daughters and Coco was there to witness some of her cooking escapades.

"Is that all you want to buy, Heiren?" Coco asked the brown haired mediator as she approached him, watching with careful eyes as Heiren’s smile vanished from his face and was replaced with a forced one.

"Only if you have enough money to buy all of this." Heiren said, turning away from the jars he placed on the counter.

Coco nodded in understanding and looked at the person behind the counter, shooting the person a small and polite smile to ease his nerves.

"How much would all of this be, sir?" Coco inquired, slipping her hand inside her pocket and getting ready to withdraw the exact amount she would need to pay for the jars.

The young man behind the counter looked terrified, his gaze darting nervously around the shop.

His face was pale, his shoulders hunched— he fidgeted, sweat beading on his forehead as he swallowed hard, his throat seemingly dry, his hands shaking slightly as he tried to look calm.

He glanced up at Coco and locked eyes with her, but his gaze quickly shifted away as soon as their eyes met, his face paling further.

Coco didn’t comment on it and turned to Heiren instead, pulling out ten gold coins from her pocket.

"You should pay for them instead." Coco said, her voice silent and laced with worry as she handed the coins to the confused mediator.

The young man behind the counter looked so terrified of Coco that the two of them noticed it.

Heiren nodded his head in understanding and accepted the coins, his fingers grazing against hers gently as he closed his hand around them.

"How much for these?" Heiren asked, smiling at the young man.

Meanwhile, Coco walked away from the counter and exited the store with the second husband trailing behind her to accompany her.

He noticed the behavior of the young man as well, but just like Coco and Heiren, he was confused.

"Do you know that man, Coco?" Quizen asked, his desire to satiate his thirst for knowledge regarding the stranger inside his wife’s body growing hungrier since earlier.

"No." Coco answered truthfully without missing a beat.

Her answer made Quizen blinked and washed the tension away from his body.

"Do you have an idea why he was acting like that towards you?" He gave her a follow up question with a tilt of his head, hugging the newly bought instrument closer to his chest.

"Unfortunately, I don’t." Coco shook her head.

Quizen hummed under his breath and raked her form from head to toe, his eyes taking in every subtle movement she made.

"Coco! Can you carry this?" Heiren called out suddenly, making Coco her body whip around.

"Alright." Coco didn’t waste any time to rush back inside the store and approached Heiren, immediately going for the basket filled with the jars of spices and seasonings that Heiren paid for.

Once she had a tight hold on the basket, she did not cast a glance on the young man’s way and exited the store once again.

"I still have six gold coins." Heiren told his wife, trailing behind her as he walked out of the store.

"Do you have to buy more for breakfast and lunch? Or is this all of it?" Quizen inquired as he raised an eyebrow towards Heiren, "I’m actually surprised you still have coins left. We could barely afford these before."

"Me, too." Heiren agreed, sighing heavily.

"If you need something, just tell me. You don’t have to buy these things with your own money."
