Chapter 100: Sincere apology [3]

Coco watched with fascination as the mediator moved around the kitchen, busily preparing something in the oven.

His movements were precise and practiced, his hands moving with a smooth grace as he moved from one task to the next.

Strangely, there was something almost mesmerizing about the way Zaque moved, the movement of his body around the kitchen almost hypnotic as he cooked.

It has always been that way.

Coco remembered how she would sit down at the dining table as she watched her big sister and mother move around the kitchen, cooking whatever they had in mind so all of them could eat.

She loves to watch people cook and bake, mesmerized at the sight of them getting lost in the task at hand.

Hence why Coco watched the man intently, her eyes fixed on his movements as he moved about the kitchen, his movements were quick, each step of the baking process seemingly second nature to him.

Despite his seemingly detached demeanor, Coco couldn’t pinpoint what made Zaque look hypnotizing— something was almost eye-catching about the way he worked, his hands moving with an almost dance-like precision.

Coco found herself transfixed by his work, her mind blank as she watched him move around the kitchen, creating something delicious and beautiful under his hands.

Zaque must have prepared the dough in advance because he only removed the clothing above the bowl he bought out of the cabinet and massaged it inside before putting it on a baking pan.

Then, he put it inside the oven.

"Can I come over and take a closer look?" Coco asked, blinking owlishly towards Zaque who looked at her.

"Yes..? Let me just turn this on." The mediator said, closing the oven and walking over to the side to press the switch— which Coco doesn’t know why it was on the side.

Coco scrambled to get off her seat, eyes wide as she watched with fascination while the oven worked its magic, the bread cooking quickly and perfectly inside.

She could see the results before her eyes, the bread rising and crisping to perfection within moments and she couldn’t help, but be marveled at the sight, the magic of the oven almost hypnotizing in its speed and efficiency.

Within just a couple of minutes, the bread was already done, the familiar high-pitched sound resonating in the air indicates that the bread is really baked.

That was so quick?! Coco exclaimed in her mind, jaw dropped at how fast the bread baked inside of the magical oven.

Coco couldn’t believe the fact that the bread was cooked in such a short amount of time, the oven’s magical ability to speed up the cooking process was baffling and left her speechless.

"Go back to your seat now, Coco." Zaque’s voice had snapped her out of her daze, making her shut her mouth.

Wordlessly, Coco stood up and walked back to her chair, her eyes still wide in disbelief as she stared at the wall, her thoughts racing.

This oven would have helped my big sister bake those pastries faster if we had it at home.. Ah, Carina would have loved this oven because she likes to bake cookies.. Mother would have appreciated this because she wants to bake loaves of bread instead of buying them outside..

Her train of thought revolved around all the possibilities if she bought a magical oven back home to where her sister and mother were.

They would have loved it. Coco thought, the corner of her lips curling up into a small smile.

Zaque turned to face Coco, looking nervous while holding a tray of freshly baked loaf of bread, the crust a beautiful golden color and the scent of freshly baked bread filling the air.

Zaque’s eyes shifted from the bread to the woman sitting by the other side of the table, his expression almost hopeful as he held out the loaf for her to see.

Unfortunately, her mind seems to be elsewhere.

Zaque could see the fond expression on Coco’s face, her eyes distant and her smile soft.

There was a small, almost unnoticeable, change in her expression as her shoulders relaxed, face softening and her face lit up with a kind of joy that was almost infectious.

Zaque couldn’t help, but be curious about what she was thinking about.

Her eyes filled with a mixture of emotion, a mix of pain and happiness that the man could see clearly, however, among the happiness and joy in Coco’s expression, he could see the sadness that seemed to linger in her gaze.

It was as if she was mourning.

Zaque pursed his lips, not liking that look on Coco’s face— she might look like she was happy, but that sadness he saw was as clear as the other emotions.

"Coco." He called out, raising his voice intentionally so Coco would stop thinking whatever she was thinking and pushed the freshly baked bread towards her, "I’m done baking. Here, have this and enjoy it."

Coco snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Zaque’s voice, blinking rapidly as she shook her head to get rid of the lingering feelings.

"Oh! This looks delicious!" Coco said, her eyes brightening up at the sight of the beautiful golden color of the crust of the bread, "Would it be okay if I finish this myself? The others wouldn’t mind, right?"

Zaque grimaced at the tone Coco gave him.

He could hear how forced her cheerfulness sounded and it looked like she was also trying her best to hide the fact that she was feeling sad.

Just what was she thinking?

Zaque wanted to ask, but he knew that it wasn’t right to do so.

"Of course." He gave her a smile accompanied with a nod of his head, "Do you want some spread to go with that? Heiren and I made some strawberry jam and chocolate spread the other day."

He wants to apologize so the best he could do is keep his mouth shut and mind his business.
