Chapter 343: Storm Dragon’s Trial (Part 2)
As we kept climbing the rocky wall on the most rainy and windy day of our lives, I could feel the air in the atmosphere getting denser, making it harder to breathe.
We were pretty high up, so it was natural to lose a bit of oxygen, but this felt quite strong and sudden, and it only made our climb even harder.
I didn’t know how, but the Storm Dragon had a spell that made it impossible to use magic in that area, which also didn’t allow me to cast a wind spell to let me breathe.
I looked down for a moment to look at Melina and Vespera, who were following right behind me, using the same holds I used as they knew they were safe.
Still, Melina seemed a bit flustered by the lack of air, and even Vespera looked like she was struggling with the climb. Nonetheless, we had to keep going, as going down would be just as hard as going up at that point.
After an hour, we were a little bit over halfway there, and I started feeling hopeful about reaching the top and resting my fingers. But that didn’t last, as after that point, the enchantment that kept us warm turned off.
*brrrrr* I shivered, keeping a firm grip on the rocky holds.
None of our magic had worked since we started the climb, so I wondered how our enchantment had managed to last that long. Still, if we had known it was going to disappear in the middle of the climb, we would have asked Vespera to make jackets for us from the beginning.
’I’ll try going a bit faster...’ I thought.
We were cold, wet, and hanging from a slippery piece of rock in the middle of a mountain’s peak, so the faster we got to our destination, the faster we would rest.
It took us another hour, and as we reached the top of the mountain, we could feel a vast amount of MP being released into the air.
As soon as I got onto the plateau, I waited for Melina and Vespera to get closer and helped them up before we all lay on the ground for a few seconds to rest.
My arms were hurting a little, and as I sat up, I could feel my MP coursing through my body as usual and the enchantments on my poncho reactivating, so I knew I could cast magic again.
I opened my void pocket and brought out some healing potions for our hands, as we were all bleeding from our nails after the perilous climb.
While getting the potions, I looked ahead and stayed still momentarily, seeing that a massive dragon was sleeping right in front of us.
When I first reached the plateau, my eyes confused the body of the sleeping dragon as part of the mountain, but now that I was taking a closer look, I felt a bit unsettled at the amount of power it was releasing while taking a nap.
The dragon was metallic white, and the scales shimmered with the light of the thunders above us.
Electric currents covered its body every few seconds, and if I had to compare its size, I would say it was as big as two or three commercial planes.
"That’s the Storm Dragon..." Vespera muttered as she doused her bloody hands with the healing potion.
"How is it releasing so much MP while sleeping?" I asked.
Vespera explained that dragons slept a lot, so their bodies developed defensive methods to protect themselves and their treasures while slumbering.
"If I had to guess, they probably had a spell that would activate after someone crossed a certain point of the mountain..." my companion continued.
"I see. Should we wake them up or just look for the relic?" I asked again, not knowing what would be the stupidest option.
One option was waking up a dragon from their slumber, which could turn out badly depending on how seriously they took their sleep, and the other option was stealing from them.
Nevertheless, it didn’t matter what we chose, as thunder echoed loudly, sounding as if the sky was being ripped open and making the dragon open its shiny, golden eyes.
As soon as its eyes opened, we could see a small trail of blue mist coming out of them as they moved side to side, inspecting the surroundings.
"Two sages and the Queen Demon Spider..." said the voice of a woman that seemed to come from the dragon.
The Storm Dragon wasn’t moving its body, only its eyes, so I wasn’t sure if the voice we heard was actually the beast or someone else. However, Vespera took a few steps forward and greeted the dragon.
"Long time no see..." said my companion with a casual tone.
Before answering, the dragon raised its neck, giving us a better idea of the size of its body, and looked down at the three of us.
"It has indeed..." the dragon replied.
The dragon had a woman’s voice, but then again, her body didn’t move whenever she spoke, which made me realize that she was using sound magic to generate her voice in the air.
When Yoru was in his wolf form, he couldn’t speak since his voice chords weren’t made for it. And even though he could speak in his beastkin form, he wasn’t used to it and mostly used his telepathy.
That’s how I knew that the dragon had the same type of problem, where their normal bodies didn’t have the capabilities to speak words. However, instead of using telepathy, they used sound magic to communicate with people.
"Umm, we came here for a relic... Sorry to wake you up," said Melina, stepping forward.
The dragon turned her head slightly to gaze at the two of us, and without showing any sign of emotion, she lowered her head just a bit to get a closer look.
"I see. You two are like Kyoko..." said the dragon, exhaling from the nose and blowing our hair back.
"You knew Kyoko?" I asked, as that was the name of the past sage who had reincarnated before us.
"Of course I did. She was the one who asked me to guard the eye..." replied the dragon.
’The eye, huh?’
