Chapter 301: “Monsters”

After guiding the Xuanji nobles to a street that was mostly abandoned, the man asked if we were going the right way.

"Ah, yes. This is just a shortcut," I replied.

The street we were walking on used to be a district for middle-class commoners, so the houses weren’t large, but they were still quite pretty. Still, they were all abandoned as all the commoners were driven out.

"I’ll ask again. Were you the ones torturing the two children on the outskirts?" I muttered, looking down at the man with a condescending stare of pure disgust.

"Why does it matter!? You are nobles like us, and they are commoners. It’s just the way things are!" the man exclaimed.

"Is that right?" I said, grabbing the whip on his waist and untying it.

"Have you ever been hit by one of these?" I asked the man, who flinched at my question as he knew what would happen to him.

"I...-" he spoke up, but his words were cut short as I used his whip to slap his face, leaving a cut on his cheek.

The woman kept yelling, but no sound came out of her mouth as Melina forcefully held her back.

"It hurts, right?" I said.

"Now, imagine you had the body of a child, and you received dozens of these in the span of one minute..." I continued.

While holding the whip, I remembered one of the memories I saw in Leslie’s mind and how this guy was whipping her back like a crazed animal with a smile on his face.

Then, I remembered how she called me "big brother," and my anger took hold of me as I started whipping the man continuously, even ripping his clothing apart.

By the time I calmed down, the man was barely conscious, sitting against the alley’s wall with his shirt wholly ripped apart and his chest and face full of cuts from the whip.

The woman was crying after seeing the scene, and while I felt like a villain doing that, I can’t deny I felt great.

If I hadn’t seen Leslie’s memories, I’m sure we would have gone much easier on them. However, they were literally getting the same treatment they had been giving the two kids, so I thought we were pretty fair.

When I removed the sound magic from the woman’s voice, she called us monsters as her voice broke down.

"We are the monsters? Have you seen yourself?" I asked, placing my hand on the woman’s head to check her memories.

Memory magic was something that I had forbidden myself to use unless I thought it was absolutely necessary. In fact, even Asys, the God of Magic, told me that I should keep it a secret as it could be extremely dangerous.

However, I was so angry at these people that I didn’t even care about interrogating them, so I just wanted to witness whatever they were doing from their perspective.

"I wanted them dead, but the plans changed. I want you to make those kids miserable, understand?" the empress said to the Xuanji couple.

"You cannot kill them, though..." she continued.

The empress explained that she had chosen them for their merciless behavior and that she expected that same energy when torturing the kids.

The Xuanji didn’t know why they were asked to do that, but they had no problem torturing two little kids. In fact, they truly enjoyed making other people suffer.

When I returned to reality, I noticed that Melina placed her hand on top of mine and used her skill of magic assimilation to "learn" memory magic and witness the noblewoman’s memories with me.

She hadn’t completely learned it, as she couldn’t delve into other people’s minds on her own, but she mastered it enough to enter into their memories along with me.

’Oh no...’ I thought, seeing Melina getting a hold of the woman’s whip.

"You really had the guts to call us monsters..." Melina said as she untied the whip.

The woman was about to speak up, but not a single word came out of her mouth as Melina started whipping the woman in the same manner that she had done to the children.

Again, if we hadn’t seen their memories, we would have definitely gone easier on them, but at that moment, Melina and I felt absolutely no remorse for our actions.

When Lady Xuanji had her back and arms full of cuts and bruises, we decided to take them to the Bao’s mansion as hostages. However, we couldn’t teleport since we had to wait until we were at the commoners’ area.

If we teleported, then mages would be able to track us down, so we decided to give them an invisibility potion, which we had to manually feed to them and carry them back to the mansion.
