My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 300: Act of Deception
Chapter 300: Act of Deception
After witnessing Leslie’s memories and telling Melina what I had seen, our determination to put an end to the devil and her lackeys rose even more.
That same day, we installed a magic quartz inside the Bao’s residence. However, we had to create an underground area for it to be well hidden.
Using a magic quartz to teleport people somewhere would always release a torrent of MP. It was an inoffensive torrent, so it wouldn’t hurt anyone, but the problem was that it was easy to sense.
Considering that there was a powerful mage among the enemies, we needed to do our best to hide the MP that the quartz produced, or he would instantly know our location.
We built the underground room inside our own, making a trap door that led to the bottom and using earth magic to shape the terrain into a sizeable cave-looking area.
Melina was in the zone, and to ensure that nobody would be able to sense the magic quartz underground, she created a new version of her sealing spell, which kept the energy from overflowing to the surface.
Honestly, it was a pretty intricate spell, but Melina was so mad that she didn’t even realize the magic she had just cast was some of the highest levels in the world.
Our plan for that day was to free more of the enslaved commoners, starting from the outskirts area since there were so many of them.
The capital of Guanghua, which was one of the largest cities in the world, was wholly surrounded by small run-down villages on the outskirts, where most of the enslaved commoners lived.
For organization purposes, the nobles had given a number to each of these small villages, going from area 1 to 12.
We had found Leslie and Yujun in area twelve, which was right next to the gate we used to enter.
Area 1 was on the other side of the main road, also adjacent to the gates, so those areas would be a bit harder to clear out of people since there were plenty of guards nearby.
Before leaving, I asked Vespera to stay in the mansion and protect the kids along with Lady Bao.
The children were a bit hesitant at first and asked to come with us, but it was genuinely too dangerous for them, so we left a few sweet snacks for them to keep their minds busy while we were gone.
Lord Bao had already gone to the palace to work as his shifts started early in the mornings, and I was counting on him to keep doing his job as usual.
When Melina and I left the mansion, we already knew what areas we would target, but we couldn’t use magic to get there, or we would easily get exposed.
I was going to the outskirts area number 4, and Melina was going to number 10, meaning that we would be quite far apart from each other, which was perfect.
These two areas were pretty much on opposite sides of each other, so even if the guards asked for help, they would have to split up to completely different sides of the city.
When we got closer to the city gates, we noticed that there was a small line of nobles who were waiting for their turn to leave for the outskirts.
The guards were tasked with writing down the names of the people who came in and out of the city, and since our fake names had been written down, we didn’t want them to keep recording our moves.
We had another noble couple behind us, a man and a woman who seemed just a bit older than us, and we could hear them talk about how they were "going to have fun with the slaves" while visibly carrying a whip on their waists.
I wasn’t even using my sound magic, and I could still hear their whole conversation, which was making me sick to my stomach.
When I was just about to ignore them and keep coming up with a plan to hide our traces, Melina turned her head slightly, and I could sense her MP rising, making me hold her hand to calm her down.
She took a deep breath and came up to my ear to whisper something.
"Look at their tablets..." she said.
’Alright...’ I thought as I turned around, looking straight at their identification tablets.
’Xuanji...? oh!’
Melina told me that when she was taking a bath with Leslie, the girl mentioned the name Xuanji, as those were the people tormenting them almost daily.
While we weren’t 100% sure that these were the same people, they matched the description that Leslie gave us.
At that instant, the light bulb on top of my head lit up with an amazing idea.
"Oh wow, are you guys the Xuanji!?" I exclaimed, acting as if I was admiring them.
The couple stood confused for a moment, but when I approached the man and started shaking his hand, telling him how much I admired his work, the arrogant noble couldn’t help but start bragging.
"Hah, well. It’s good to know that my job is appreciated by others..." he said with a snide smile.
’I don’t even know what this guy’s job is...’ I thought.
Melina, catching onto my plan, approached the Xuanji lady and held her hands.
"Oh my, I’ve heard Lady Xuanji was beautiful, but I didn’t expect her to be an angel!" Melina said, making the woman, who wasn’t really that pretty, blush.
"Let us invite you guys for a meal. Please, that would make our day!" I continued.
"Heh, I can’t say no to such a dedicated admirer. What do you think, dear?" Lord Xuanji asked his wife.
Lady Xuanji, however, seemed entranced with Melina’s compliments, almost as if she was falling in love with her or something.
"Y-yes, I have no problems with that, of course!" she said.
"You guys are awesome. I know a really good place for us. Follow me!" I said to the couple, sharpening my eyes as soon as I turned my face away from them.
Obviously, we weren’t taking them to any restaurant but to a dark, abandoned alley.
