Chapter 288: Kidnapping Nobles (Part 2)
Before Melina and I could discuss our situation with the two Guanghua nobles, we were told to wait for a moment as there were others who wanted to attend our small gathering.
It was Bjorn and Magnus, the two warriors from the Northern Empire, who had been waiting for us to return to the settlement.
We didn’t have a way to send them back home, but even if we did, the two of them wanted to stay and fight with us. At least, that’s what they said.
When we explained to them that a devil had taken control of Guanghua, Lord Yushan looked shocked, but the two northern warriors didn’t seem that taken aback.
Even Mei Ling, whom we had already told the reason why we were there, looked more surprised than the two warriors.
"We had our suspicions, but we’ve never gotten close to seeing it..." said Bjorn.
The two warriors told me that they were able to sense demonic energy in the same way that mages could. In fact, they also used magic when fighting, but their methods were different from those of other countries.
They called themselves "battle-mages," which was basically the equivalent of a knight in the Sephyr Kingdom. However, these guys had a more "Viking look" and used spears and axes as their weapons.
"In our hometown, the emperor suddenly went mad and started attacking every single village... It was during the attack on ours that we felt a massive torrent of demonic energy," Magnus explained.
Apparently, after the attacks in the villages started happening, Bjorn and Magnus took the people from their settlement and moved further north, as it would be more difficult to reach them there.
However, after a few days, their new settlement had been surrounded by the forces of the northern emperor along with Guanghua soldiers. That’s how they connected the dots of two devils working together.
"It would have been impossible for outsiders to reach that place, but they got there thanks to the alliance with the emperor..." Bjorn continued.
In the end, the army that surrounded them only asked for the two warriors to turn themselves in. In exchange, they wouldn’t lay a hand on the settlement.
The emperor knew that there was nobody in the settlement who could pose a problem for him other than the two warriors, so he was more than willing to let the others live in exchange for them.
Their settlement was deep in the north, so even if they left them alone, the emperor thought they would all die from starvation by living in such a remote location.
"That bastard underestimated the resilience of northerners..." Magnus commented.
After that, they were both instantly sent to Guanghua under the forces of Wang Tao and turned into slaves until we arrived, of course.
"A real devil... It’s so hard to believe..." Lord Yushan said, holding his chin with his palm.
"Ah, don’t get me wrong, I believe in your story. It’s just that devils have always been more like a scary tale..." he continued.
The people of Guanghua weren’t aware of what was happening outside their country, as no news from the outside was allowed to enter.
Yushan and Mei Ling didn’t know about anything that had happened in Kalusia with Zagor, which cleared up why they were so clueless on this topic.
It was a long talk, but Melina and I explained in detail everything that had happened to us up until that point—the defeat of Armaros, the war in Kalusia against Zagor, and the threats of Drakzen.
I even told them that there were two devils who were friendly, and since they didn’t believe me, I decided to show Nessa’s true form to them.
The two warriors were wary at first, but they were experienced enough to tell that Nessa didn’t have any bloodlust for anyone there and relaxed.
Bjorn even made a comment about how it must have been hard for her to live with those monsters.
"We’ve been dealing with them for a few years, but I can’t imagine being with them for hundreds of years..." he said, seemingly feeling bad for Nessa.
Now that we were all acquainted, Yushan felt more confident about asking us questions.
"I understand why you did all that in Xiulan now. But still, why did you kidnap me? I get Lady Mei needed protection, but this is my first time meeting you..." Lord Yushan said in a calm manner.
There were a few different reasons why I kidnapped him, the first one being that he would become the main suspect if we left him there, as he was the last one to enter the theater before us.
He was also the main food supplier in the country, or at least his family was, and we needed the nobles to go through a bit of a crisis if we wanted to take down the devil controlling the emperor.
Most nobles were on the emperor’s side. Some of them were doing it for their own safety, and some actually enjoyed overpowering others and going on power trips.
For that reason, we needed some animosity to generate against the royals, and if their food supply were cut off, they would have no other choice than to either beg their emperor or stand against him.
"The situation in this country is a bit more complicated than in Kalusia..." I said.
Since every single citizen in Kalusia had been enslaved, it was very easy for them to turn against the devil as they knew that there was no benefit from standing with him. However, Guanghua needed more of a revolution.
All of the commoners would certainly stand against the emperor who made it legal for anyone of higher rank to enslave them, but not every noble would.
"I see. It’s not a terrible plan, though it’s quite risky..." said Wu.
"Dealing with devils is always risky, no matter how you go about it..." I replied.
Now that Wu knew of our plans, he was feeling more confident in trying to help us and said that even if we kidnapped him, it wouldn’t be enough to cut off the supplies they were sending.
Wu’s father was still in the capital, where most of their trading took place. While the supplies they delivered would be shortened without Wu, it wouldn’t be stopped as long as his father was there.
