Chapter 287: Kidnapping Nobles (Part 1)
When I took out our wooden masks from my void pocket, I reunited with Melina at the theater’s entrance and put them on.
We needed to hide our identities since other nobles had seen us walking with Mei Ling, so we even changed our outfits back to our usual ponchos to avoid raising any suspicions.
Then, Melina dispelled her seal from the door, and I kicked it open with force, startling everyone inside—it felt as if we were robbing a bank or something.
"Alright, everyone, get on the ground, and you won’t die!" I shouted.
Some nobles took my warning and instantly kneeled, but others were too arrogant to follow orders, even when their lives were being threatened.
Noticing a man standing up straight and looking at us defiantly, I raised a finger and shot a light beam into his shoulder. It wasn’t strong enough to obliterate his arm or anything, but it was enough to bring him to his knees.
After the man received my first warning shot, the others who were still standing followed through with my warning and lowered their heads as they kneeled.
Honestly, I only wanted them to get on the ground like people would do in movies when a bank was getting robbed, but they were kneeling as if we were kings, which was not what I had in mind.
’Whatever, this works...’ I thought.
"Now, you people have been acting quite nasty, so we are here to take all the evil people away!" I shouted, trying to put on an act.
"Where are Mei Ling and Lord Yushan!?" I asked.
Mei Ling raised her hand nervously. "I’m here..." she said.
Melina started to walk towards her when a man stood up abruptly from the ground. He was wearing nice regal robes and had long, dark hair tied into a bun.
"I’m Lord Yushan. Whatever you are going to do to her, you can do it to me...." he confidently said.
’Huh? A noble trying to protect someone else?’ I thought.
"That’s nice of you, but we are not doing that..." I replied as I appeared right beside him.
"To the rest of you, I better not see another slave in this city, or we will be back to burn it down to the ground..." I said with a threatening tone, releasing gravity magic around me to make their bodies feel heavy and scare them.
Then, we teleported out of the theater to Yuandu with both Mei Ling and Lord Yushan.
The reason I took Yushan with me was because he was the man who fed the slaves at the theater before we got to them, so I was under the impression that he wasn’t a bad guy but was probably being threatened like Mei Ling.
He even tried volunteering his life in exchange for Mei Ling’s, and that was definitely not something that an evil person would do.
Before explaining the situation, I teleported back to Xiulan to the Zhao’s residence, where Yoru was still keeping watch of the three enslavers we kidnapped.
We couldn’t leave them there anymore, but we also couldn’t let them go free since they had seen our faces, so it was only natural that we took them to Yuandu.
Surprisingly, I teleported there to take them with me, but it turned out that Yoru had learned the teleportation spell now that he was a Legendary Beast, so he was able to take them to Yuandu himself.
The settlement had grown quite a lot, as it wasn’t just receiving all the enslaved villagers that Melina and I freed but also the ones that were sent by our other group.
Vespera, Nessa, and the maids had gone to a town called "Liren," where they freed over 300 enslaved villagers.
Liren was much smaller than Xiulan, so it made sense why their numbers were so much lower than what we got. Still, the only one in their group who could use the teleportation spell was Vespera, so it was impressive they managed to get so many.
Our approach was one thing we did differently, as the maids told me that they had made a mess when saving all those people and that their faces were undoubtedly seen.
The three kidnapped enslavers were taken to a prison that Vespera built with earth magic and was sealed with Melina’s spell to make it almost impossible to break out.
Mei Ling and Lord Yushan were taken to another building, where we could discuss with them the true nature of our plans.
They were the only two nobles that had proven to us that they could be trusted. Even if they decided they didn’t want to work with us, they had no choice but to stay at Yuandu.
We had already told Mei Ling about the devil that was controlling their country, and she genuinely had no idea what the hell we were talking about, so I wanted to see what kind of reaction we would get from Lord Yushan.
"Alright, first and foremost. My name is Ichiro, and this is Melina..." I said to the nobleman to start our conversation.
The man sat straight up in his chair, his expression showing a mix of defiance and curiosity.
He probably thought that we were going to torture him or something, but all we wanted was to have a long chat with him.
"I’m Yushan Wu..." he said.
Wu was the oldest son of the Yushan family, who were the most prominent food suppliers in the entire country.
"Cool, I’ll call you Wu from now on, then..." I said with a friendly demeanor.
Wu seemed confused at our treatment, even asking out loud if he was indeed kidnapped.
"Well, yes. We did kidnap you since we can’t let you leave this place, at least not yet..." I replied.
"I see, then why did you bring me here?" he asked.
"You fed those slaves at the theater, right?" I answered with another question.
"H-how did you know?"
"Because we saw you leaving, and the people in the cells told me about it too..." I said.
Wu looked down with apprehension and clenched his own palm, seemingly not proud of his actions, but I wasn’t saying it in a bad way.
’I get it. There is more to this than him just "feeling pity" for the enslaved villagers...’ I thought.
